Not sure what to make of this article. "Play by the rules" ? Is the author suggesting become one of the corrupt officials if you want to play ? I would say it is pretty pathetic advise....to stay in power dont take a stand etc. If you want to cheat, cheat carefully...dont leave a trail....I was hoping this article was meant in jest and deliberately sarcastic but the more I read it the more it got nauseating ....a reporter saying lets forget all the ideals and "become one of them"...wow.

India and change?
by Amos on Apr 19, 2010 07:19 PM

It is saddening to know that very few people in India think out of the square..because this is the best example of what happens when someone does..
the bottem line is India will be the same even after 20 years..
it makes me laugh when politicians and media made a big fuss about the cattle class issue..
and also some group protesting and bashing couples on valentines day..

Change is not for the Indians
by Saji Nair on Apr 19, 2010 07:08 PM  | Hide replies

The Indians can never accept changes. It is evident with the Tharoor incident. Corrupt or not the criteria is, he was one politician who had the guts to tell his deeds to the country men. But our AGED heads will not accept it. Remember friends people who are governing us are all well beyond their prime as well as they are now looking to 5- 10 years of life in fromt of them. Tharoor was one man, who had a foresight for atleast 20 years. Any planning for the country should be on the terms of 20- 25 years in front. THat is what I liked about Manmohan singh and Chidambaram. Only Tharoor had this quality other than them. The rest, I do not even know what they are doing in the parliment. They have not changed anything according to the time in their respective ministry. Mrs Kalyani Shankar got it all wrong when she commented on who's who. Most of the politicians are corrupt in our system. Those who are not are made to shut their mouths by the criminals. Those who voice their opinion are kicked out of the system. This is what happened here. Every electoin the parties keep telling young peole shall be brought to elections. But where? I see only the same old people without any eduction and with all the scams(either acquitted by our corrupt judiciary or with ongoing charges in the court- which will ofcourse be a let off)coming back to the parliment. Once that is over it is the turn of their sons. So no democracy. Dear, Fellow Indians, please think once for our future generations.

Mr. Nair, I don’t completely agree with you. I have been following Tharoor since his candidature for UN post. He may be an intellect, but when it comes to understanding your work area, you have to reach out the system/people that you are going to deal with. Calling common man as Cattle class simply shows his attitude towards common man in India. It is good to make use of latest gadget/technology in your day to day life, but you should not forget the very basic thing - that is People. Let me tell put a similar example here. I have been working as a Sr. Business Analyst in NYC and have worked with no. of leading investment banks here. In 2009,I had an opportunity to do a project in India for one of the leading Insurance/wealth management company. Believe me, I had such a strange experience. There was no infrastructure, very few people who understand the business model and technology involved in it etc. Now, that doesn’t mean they were not making business in India. In fact they are the No.1 in India. Now if I try to compare my experience working on Wall Street to other companies at Nariman Point of BKC in Mumbai, I will definitely see the difference. The computer systems may be the same, but remember – People around me are different and in order to succeed in your job, you have to localize yourself. Understand the people and act. What do you think?

Well said Mr. Chhokra. You nailed it. This Tharoor man did not get it. He forgot that he became a Minister by peoples vote (maybe from people who do not have a computer or don't know how to use an Internet). He should have understood that first, and not stay in cloud nine from his UN stint, and his victory in the election, as if he was special from the common man who elected him. YOU HAVE TO LOCALIZE, THAT'S IT.

If ur last name was anything other than NAIR, your comments would have neen looked with a dirrerent perspective. So, defending Tharoor is considered more as a emotional support for a malayalee to another malayalee.
This is my take....Regionalism plays a bigger role than anything...

Very well penned article.

The rule of the game is simple in India - Do whatever corruption, fraud you want, but keep a low profile. Feel sorry as well as annoyed for Shashi Tharoor. This episode tells us that - it doesnt matter how intellectual you are,Honesty and Integrity should never be compromised.

I wonder how the writer could comment on the keralites thinks about Tharoor, sitting in mumbai or delhi. Tharoor have huge support in the state and the controversy must have only augmented it. These kind of authors make fun of themselves with this stray, biased comments to neutral, educated youth of the state.I think Rediff should take care not to promote this kind of journalism. Thanks..

The virtue of being a great intellect and UN experience, doesn't give him any divine right to be corrupt. He may be the smartest politican around but he still involved himseld in corrupt and impropriety dealings. Its a crystal clear case of corruption.

Not sure for what purpose his support will increase in kerala. He only involved in Kerala IPL to increase his assests. Why should Pushkar return the equity if it was not corruption money. She returned to help Sashi on last moment but now Money and Post both had gone.

Hypocritical Arguments..
by observer on Apr 19, 2010 05:47 PM  | Hide replies

I feel all these talks about Corruption are hypocritical. Just think about these..

1. Just for the sake of arguments if we agree that this is corruption then, if we use the same yardstick/criterion WHO WILL BE LEFT IN OUR POLITICS, BUSINESS AND SPORTS?.

2. We have politicians who are facing (and even convicted in Criminal cases) and they are being celebrated as 'great netas' by media and parties.
We (and media also - even media are also owned by these fellows) don't have any objections for these people.

One thing is sure, Tharoor was naive (or may be we can say that he was foolish in Indian Politics)...

Let us not say much about corruption.. because if we say that, WE WILL NOT HAVE ANY OF OUR NETAS LEFT ...

So ? If we have 542 corrupt that doesn't mean we allow 543th to be also corrupt. Who so ever is corrupt needs to go. Just the there are many corrupt politicans in the parliament is no reason for another corrupt to be added.
