Beware, Mr. Otis!
by Ajit Menon on Mar 03, 2009 11:53 AM

You said you will give these items for free if the Indian Gov increased the GDP going to the poor to 5%. I dont doubt your noble intentions but beware of the Indian Govt, Mr. Otis! The Indian Gov is very capable of increasing the GDP to whatever number you like. Infact it can even change it retrospectively for 2008!!

Gandhiji's assets should be in the land of Gandhiji
by sameer on Mar 03, 2009 11:39 AM

Recent news of acutioning the Gandhiji's itmes are disturbing, and the Govt., silence is more surprizing and inviting anger on the govt policy towards it.
we the indians should have the emotion for such things to be preserved and consider regars for that.

Let him have the items
by sunil chiplunkar on Mar 03, 2009 10:58 AM  | Hide replies

Mr. Otis is one of the best Westerner Gandhians' in the contemporary world. This is the surmise on reading the article. Considering this, it is best that the items are auctioned to other world Gandhians.

There is no point in bringing the items to India - unless it goes to the Sabarmati Ashram.

Gandhi is a world figure. Gandhian thought and principles are universal.

Some body stole those belongings and went to USA. So, an investigation has to be done on how this man got possession of those items.

Important for these times - Sathyagraha / Spectacles?
by Raj Narayanan on Mar 03, 2009 10:50 AM  | Hide replies

Gandhiji's ideals are much bigger than the steel rimmed glasses. Why give much importance to the material that is immaterial...
People... take a moment to think about the struggle he made to seek the TRUTH - Satyagraha... rather than arguing about the rather unimportant objects.

Place it on record
by AswathaKumar K on Mar 03, 2009 10:49 AM  | Hide replies

Mr OTIS, ur intentions are noble. However, we are not aware of any American till date genuinely helping the poor. Please put your record straight of having done some good work yourself with your finances, organisational skills and other talents.
If citizens of America reduce their wastage by 10 percent, we may not need Mahatma's items. World could be a better place to live to that extent.

Man this is crazy, when he bought the items nobody objected but now every body is little more bothered than neccessary. how does it matter if he is selling them for money or noble cause after all it is his property. if you are so concerned about honour of the nation why are you begging him to give you back free!! come on man be man enough to go ahead and buy it out in the public auction. let us not preach morality when we practice none.

As you said - let us not preach morality, please don't let others take your ideas ... Government of India knows how to deal with this selling.

Nobody is having "clean chit" in this world.

The police should contact you on auction day and send you to jail ... Does anybody know how he got possession of Gandhi's belongings?

He is auctioning all the belongings to make some money for himself during recession. No other cause.
