The True Inheritors of Gandhi's Assets
by AK GOEL on Mar 03, 2009 12:18 PM

Mahatma Gandhi is the most (mis)used and abused person in his own country -India, especially among leaders of his very own party – the great Congress (I), who claim to be the only worthy inheritors of his great legacy!

He is occasionally remembered not out of love or respect, but as a mere ritual and to encash his memories for dirty, selfish ends.

And, now, I am afraid, if Indian authorities are able to take possession of Gandhi’s memorabilia, a similar fate awaits them as well, in India.

There is hardly any party, leader, administrator, teacher, professional or national conscience keeper left in India, who may provide such value and stature to Gandhi’s life and Philosophy or who may use his Memorabilia for such great objectives, as Mr. James Otis is said to have attained through his words and works.

If it is really true, which I fail to believe as a deceived Indian, I salute the spirit of Mr. Otis behind his decision to part with the memorabilia of Gandhiji – either through sale or gift to the Govt. of India. It gives a real good meaning to the possession or even to the auction of memorabilia of great people like Gandhiji.

Now it is entirely for the Govt. of India to prove its commitment, sincerity and reality..

In any case, the very spirit of the article is enough to make us reduce shameless hypocrisy in our every day life, and to come out of our long slumber, if we are really a nation of live persons!

How can you use the word 'scrap'? Can you call as scrap the spectacles used by your grandfather? Don't you care for a pen gifted by your uncle / aunt with love? So also are the belongings of the father of the nation.

Well said! I think his memorabilia should go to an organization that is founded on the same principles that Gandhiji stood for. Let it inspire worthy people, be they Indian or not.

I dnt understand what the hell our govt is doing??? Imagine what would have happened if India had any property of any famous American or Queen of Britain and announce to auction it... Firstly they would have not allowed us to keep such things & if at all we had something and announce the auction, imagine how they would have reacted... It seems like our govt don't care for our heritage!

First, please mind your language. Next read the subject of political science. It is not the responsibility of the government to safe-guard all the valuable items of the country. You as an individual has equal responsibility to do something to care for the belongings of the father of the nation.
