Save the Pilots!
by swapnadip on Jun 05, 2009 01:34 AM  | Hide replies

Our pilots are very well trained and skilled. But only 250 of them will be able to ride on the sukhois.

Rest are going to loose their lives on those mig 21's.
What we need is more advanced 5th generation fighters.

We are in a deal with Russians to build the Sukhoi T-50 which will hit the assembly line on 2012 for russians and 2015 for India.

The Russians can be spot on but India is not.

India will wait for these sukhois to turn into flying coffin and then 'THINK' of something.

Training a pilot to fly advanced fighter jets loaded possibly with nukes is not as cheap as training a taliban foot soilder to fire a stinger. Even otherwise IAF, armed forces put thier life at risks during hostilities, put them at risk when there is no conventional war is plain STUPID.

No sir. Russia has got both new and old stocks hooked up in their stores.

But, its a shame that we are only buying the old stock which used be magnificient in their 'OLD TIMES' but not now.

Idea, that did not help pakis. Do you know during kargil war, pakis were left with oil just for a week, when the war ended. Nawaz sherif said in an inteview that in any case they were going to acept defeat as they had no fuel left to fight more. Indian navy did not let any ship from saudi and other 'religious brother states' enter pakistan with oil, money and weapons.

What is the use of such military might
by such jano on Jun 05, 2009 01:13 AM  | Hide replies

'on paper' which cant be used to teach a lesson to pakistan. May be its good fun for IAF pilots to play with these expensive toys. They should earn some money by taking ordinary people in twin seater aircrafts to skies for hefty charges. there are enough corrupt people in india to afford such an expensive ride.

but its a good idea to involve pakis in this wild goose chase. they can try to make as much defence expenditure as india and keep skewing thier budgets towards defence.

Until and unless porkistan stops this rat race .. it cannot grow !!

problem with porkistan is that as it gets little confort that it has capability to thwart indian attack it goes and does something. All the wars with porkistan has been started by 'brave' porkis. After 26/11 happened my only hope for a lesson for pakis rested on pakis, i hoped they would panic and attack india as preemptive, and india would than be forced to hit porkistan , that did not happened. Same they did in kargil.

No, there are people of each caste, due to reservation policy. That is why the output is disappointing because a reservation catagery person not just recruited but also gets promoted at regular interval ahead of performing people. Think about it, will you work with zeal if that happens around you?

Sir, our pilots and army men are very well trained. The USAF joint exercise you are talking about, the sukhoi's scored 21:1 kill ratio certainly in our favour.

The general was made to apologies after what he said. He was angry because the IAF did'nt allow them to turn on the NB011 radars (very advanced) on fitted on the sukhois. There are also rumours of roars in Pentagon stunned by the kill ratio.

But yes, these pilots' skills are wasted whenever a mig 21 crashes.

We should rather focuse on obtaining new planes for these skilled men.
Thanks

if you are aware Pilot skills is now a outdated concept.modern air forces such as USAF now deals with total automated flight control, in some cases even the ground based team flying the aircrafts. Dog fight is now a thing of past, BVR has replaced them. USAF pilots are not tranied to go near enemy aircrafts. But rather stay as far as they can possibly. But i am not dicrediting the skillf of our pilots as such, they have been great, but the results on red flag certainly dont carry the weight as one might want.

Srinivas,
The 'making fun' aspect was more on account of the indian aircraft not being in the wargame picture all the time.It was like our aircraft were out of sync with the rest of the group(all western fighters with NATO standard mission mapping) due to the fact that the avionics/systems on our planes were different. Also as in Mr Swapnadib's reply,we would not have activated the mentioned radar in the Sukhois,to prevent the NATO/US scanners from reading it's frequency signature. The US pilot did speak abt the dive angle of the Su30 and remarked that the F-22 can out flank it anyday. But the USAF has shelved plans on inducting F-22 as it is too expensive. They are going for the F-35 Lightning instead, which, can do Vertical Take off and Landing as well. The F-35 did not take part in the air exercise.

Superior Air Power
by milind b on Jun 05, 2009 12:34 AM  | Hide replies

I have read a lot of foolish messages saying that we are poor & we shouldnt spend more on our Armed Forces . We are poor because we were never militarily strong , we have been ruled for almost 1000 years , 800 years by Muslems & 200 years by british.
Even now we are not strong at all, we have 750 Fighter aircrafts v/s 2500 chinese fighter aircrafts. We have only one Aircraft Carrier INS Viraat v/s Chinese 7 .
Our navy is only 20% of Chinese Navy .
Our Army is 1.1 Million compared to Chinese PLA of 3.1 Million strong .
Our Army is crying for Latest weapons , but govt thinks otherwise. Our Intelligence agency is the worst among all Big Nations. Inspite of this tremendous shortcomings we are still spending only 2.5 % of our GDP on Defence compared to over 6% spending of China.
Whats the use of becoming prosperous & Rich country , as we would work for hundreds of years , generations to become rich & again some foreign power will defeat us militarily to take away our richness and make us poor.
DRDO has not still made ARJUN Main Battle Tank , inspite of over 20 years of research. What sort of Nation are we???
Time to change , else we will be ruled by Chinese Junkies , like they are ruling the Tibetians.

Correct. Agreed we are poor but being poor does not mean we dont need security. We dont eye our neighbours territory but most of our neighbours have eye on ours. We have to be prepared for possible aggression to defend our motherland.

I read in some newspaper that MBT Arjun is rejected and since its very bulky we are using T -80 Tanks.
OK my friend what about AKASH Missile , so many times it was tested & finally it was scrapped.
DRDO needs to be pulled up for not producing results .
Take the criticism positively , you seem to work in DRDO so you are annoyed with the criticism

Rediff message boards have never been known for erudite comments but the comments on this article are truly out of this world.
Some want us to join NATO, some others want us to give up defense spending and many think rediff has let out defense secrets(in an article full of errors). Geez guys, start reading a bit on security challenges we're facing, how our armed forces are faring, in what areas we're world class and where we're lacking before shooting your mouth off. Just one humble request, please read before you post.

IAF needs fifth generation fighters. Currently we have max 4.5 generation fighers. Fifth generation fighter are invisible on radar. Only fifth generation fighter plane currently in operation is F-25 operated by US air force. We are working with russia to get over own by 2012. MCRA deal is also important as it will phase out MiG21 with russian MiG23 Or american F16,French Raffle.

No use this Air Force and other Millitary
by yogaraja marimuthu on Jun 05, 2009 12:14 AM  | Hide replies

What is the use of having Air force and other forces, wast of money. Whether Navy saved our fisherman from our enemies. China, Pakistan, Sri Lanaka, Bangaladesh, Nepal and even Maldives can easily attack India and get away with it. Our forces are used to kill our own people in Kashmir, Nagaland, Assam, Manipur. Recently our forces used to kill Sri Lankan 1,00,000 tamil civilians. Our forces never saved the life innocent civilians, they always killed the people. Forces are used for only state terror.

There was series of MiG Crashes during routine flights. Ideat George Fernandes also took a ride on one "to prove MiGs are safe" by that one ride of his.

Any updates on why those accidents - Sabotage, ISI getting into ranks of IAF aircraft maintenance?
