Attacks on Indians have increased, or the news of those attacks have increased...

Also state what are you using as your baseline to compare..

Indians are safe here
by Mik on Jun 03, 2009 11:48 AM  | Hide replies

I am an Indian living is Australia for last 9 years..Never faced racism of this nature.I came here as a student. My understanding why Indian Students are attacked:
1)They are the only people out in the Night for odd hour Jobs.
2)Most of the time they dont want to lodge police complaint.
3)On trains they talk laoudly in Hindi/Punjabi/telgu with each other which local people hate.
4)They carry laptops/expensive mobile Phones/and Cash. For showoff but no one cares here unlike India.
5)Students are always in grops,as we do in India ,in colleges ,which is considered aggressive in the local culture.

And police here is quite racist,if you are in trouble they wont come quickly for your resuce, behave like our police.

Out of your many reasons 1) may be the sole explanation for a number of attacks on Indian students. Likewise 4)

As to the others: 3) talking loudly in Hindi or Telegu, even if it isn't the done thing on trains in Australia, is not reason to attack anybody.

As for reason 5) you may have noted that many of the students who were attacked were alone.

Your final comment on the Aussie police being racist contradicts your first sentence in which you say that you have never experienced racism in Australia.

If he's never been to the police, then how does he know what the police are like?

As for being uncouth, calling another poster "idiot" is very civilized in your books, I presume.

This is the effect of severe recession not necessarily racism
by dallastxusa on Jun 03, 2009 11:07 AM  | Hide replies

The world economy is in the gutter. In such difficult times, such incidents are bound to increase. Australia is becoming poorer by the day and many whites are falling into poverty. They are jealous of Indians.

Wow.... that was the best one I read for a long time..... ;-)

"Australians" are jealous so they are ganging up in their millions and sending most of the 95000 Indian students to the hospital....

That's really rich.... keep them coming .... ;-) ;-)

It is likely that jealousy is a motive for those on the lowest rung of society. Similar surveys have been conducted in Europe. A number of working class people resent the fact that foreigners come to their country and take jobs. They do not like to see espescially dark-skinned foreigners living a better life than themselves.

I do not find it "rich" at all. It is a plausible explanation, however clumsily it might have been put. But all the same, a fact which has to be dealt with.

Without even knowing who the attackers are, you are quite quick to embrace the "jealousy" theory....

BTW, can you explain why only 6 of the 95000 "better life livers" are attacked?....

If I extend the logic of such statistically insignificant numbers, then a "plausible" explanation of attacks on foreigners in India would be that all Indians are jealous of tourists coming to India, and we don't want anyone to enter our country....

I wrote that jealousy is a likely motive. It is not the only explanation.

Having said that, I do not for a moment doubt that these attacks should be roundly condemned. The Indian students are absolutely right in asking the Australian authorities to protect them. I am happy to see that the Indian government has taken the matter up with the Australians.

Hypocrites galore!!
by Virendra Singh on Jun 03, 2009 06:26 AM  | Hide replies

Indians are much safe in any place in world apart from their own country!
There have been no riots in Australia targetting Indians. Riots take place in third world country like India. These are muggings which may happen to anybody. Much violent crimes take place in all Indian cities at all times. Nobody has been killed there and all injured are given such excellent treatments. Try admitting any injured in India and you would know the difference.

The numerous reports of attacks on Indians have been reported in the Australian media. They are not fictional. These attacks were directed against individuals: they are not riots - nobody has claimed that riots took place.

When riots take place in India, they are rightly condemned in the media. We do not pretend that they do not happen. I think you are also mistaken in your view that any injured person cannot be admitted into hospital.

However, this is not about rioting in India, the matter at hand is attacks on Indian students. Those who have been attacked are obviously not as safe as you claim they are in Australia. They have every right to expect the Australian state to protect them.

I believe that media and the Australian PM has rightly condemned the attacks contrary to whatever else you believe....

If you mean to say that Indians in Australia are not safe, then I presume by the same logic you are saying Indians in India are not safe either - coz you just highlighted that riots and attacks do take place in India too..

I do agree that everybody including Indians have every right to expect the Australian state to protect them, and no one including the government, the media and the opposition is denying that...

I have the impression that you wilfully misunderstand my posts. Perhaps if you read the original post, and before reading my comment, you might put things into context.

For the record: I have never said that Indians are not safe in India or Australia. I support the right of all human beings to live in a society free of violence.

Australian society compared to India
by Kumar on Jun 03, 2009 04:57 AM  | Hide replies

In India we have the evil caste system. Indians discrimate their own people. This discrimination is being going on for thousands of years. India needs to fix its own house first before lecturing Australia.

If we were to follow your reasoning, the Indian government should do nothing to protect its own citizens. And perhaps you also think that the Indian students are wrong in asking the Australian state to protect them.

Perhaps if I were to put to you that if one or several of these students who were attacked was from a "lower caste" background, you may be persuaded into thinking that it is right to ask the Australian state to take measures to protect these Indian students? I do not for a moment think that an Australian gang on a train is particularly mindful of obsolete Indian caste heirarchies.

By all means, it is right to consign the caste system to history, which the Constitution did in 1950. But to suggest that the Indian authorities do nothing in the face of attacks on their own citizens, is utterly irresponsible on your part.
