I would like to see 500 feet tall statue of Sonia mataji, facing the Vatican
...Just kidding. It is really nice to see this happen finally- India should get rid of all British era statues (Queen Victoria et al), and Mughal era statues. It is time to show-case our Hindu leaders.

Hitler is a part of German history but he is not considered a hero there or anywhere else. What I mean is, a villain should be remembered and showcased as a villain.

u r saying it here in the blog so u r safe dont even dare to say it in front of anymaharashtrian or any indian who has a backbone u will get the answer u westernised dog....
It's good to see credit to a man who fought against the stupid moghals and brought together all the hindus. I hope they make it as good as Statue of Liberty. Ofcourse it may be from money of Govt. But they should be able to recover the investment by making it as a tourist spot and making sure common man can visit the place through ferries.
By this they can recover cost and create jobs in tourism field and also preserve indian culture and history Hope it comes good

Shivaji could be a myth. So could Lord Ram So could Jesus Christ So could Prophet Mohammed So could Napoleon So could Julius Ceaser So could Cleopatra
Do not betray your lack of respect for Indian leaders by questioning recorded history.

i do not see this as a good utilization of funds, as pointed out by few others. If our politicians are trying to compete with statue of liberty, let them first compete with the basic infrastructure of US and then their architects. all election gimmicks. who the hell made such promises during elections in 2004 that is being thought of implemented in 2008!
Come on yar.. I Think its good to have that, but not an urgency. We should display our history and legends to ppl thats good , but on the thought what our economy of mumbai is going thru ,first we need to settle all that. Are work for roads in mumbai done? Are water probs solved? Are basic things like power and transport solved? then why are v concentrating on such useless things, or its just a way for some contractors and politician to earn money out of it. To save money we are building road out of cheap material which needs repair every month, why cant we invest some money in that and get good roads???????????hmmmmm I am sure contruction of this statue will cost some crores....n that too from ppls pocket. Hey everyone plzz stop that.

"We" are not building roads with cheap material. The country is investing in good roads. The contractors, in collusion with the politicians are siphoning off the money into banks in Lichenstein and elsewhere.
funds are not the problem. The problem is utilization and allocation of funds appropriately.
Dont talk like that useless faceless indian we have heard before

Nobody just talks....Why there r power cuts boss...u are a good indian..plzz explain??? hahahaha

You idiot! There is a reason that they use briquettes for constructing the roads. The idea is that in areas like the andheri station road where there is NO PLACE on the road to allow for the temporary closure of the road to ensure concretization of the road, they use quick fix solutions.
Also, in areas of high density usage, like shankar sheth flyover at dadar, they are used as the road sees a lot of traffic and such a setup ensures easy fixing.
This methodology is employed all over europe and in New York city. The problem lies not with the technology or the idea, but rather with the implementation.
And hence the state of the roads... dont blame the lack of funds. If anything, there was an excess of funds used by all means.
There are power cuts... and sadly so. Again, funds allocated are not being used properly. There is pilferage and theft.
The point was and still remains. You cannot say that we will first take care of roads, electricity, housing and what have you. Only after that will we look at healthcare, sports, tourism etc etc... they have to all go hand in hand.

they are again doing the same thing by building that statue...wasting money...and nothin else.It would be of any use ... After all that they will pay heavyly ti maintain it, and produce fake bills. Why give them a chance
They should build a huge statue of Shivaji..the boss :)
Seriously, is there nobody else other that him to name/build statues??? Why not Bal Gangadhar Tilak? I feel bad for Shivaji as he has been forced to become a Maratha leader (not Indian).

That is a fair question. For once, there is someone sensible in the forum.
While it is a valid point, the fact remains that a project of such stature should involve the biggest leader. While he is not merely a maharashtrian leader, his origins make him an icon of choice for the maharashtrians.
Just like marwaris from mumbai support the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL [according to median sources] given their 'background' and we expect NRIs from the US to understand and appreciate the local Indian culture, it is obvious that maharashtrians will have a softer spot for him.
