Bureaucratic displays of might fool no one.
by V S on Jan 26, 2007 08:09 PM  | Hide replies

Fact is that India is still doing poorly on Human Development Index and has some serious issues with corruption , crime , red tapism and inequality.

such "sarkari" sponsored displays of might are a waste of Taxpayers money and such money should be better spent in opening hospitals and schools every year.

I agree with kaushik. Do you spend all the money you earn on medical treatment of your family?. Dont you bloody eat or go out to enjoy? Then I pity you. We are a proud vibrant Nation and I am sick of people who crib over celebrating our vibracy every year. God bless India. Long live the Nation.

I read all these comments. People are just feeling eulogizing only is patriotism. As much as elogizatopn, criticism also should be there. That is why 4th estate is unravelled in the country and equal opportunity is being given at least on paper for opposition in legislaturs. If military might is great though borrowed. other happenings shall also be equally considered. What people say about Nithari killings, so many and increasing terrorist attacks, suicides of farmers, illegal grabbings of poor peoples lands and many other malignses. How many poor are honoured on republic day for sustaining poverty and still staying patriotic and as Indians? So, please lets remind our draw backs of the system on this great day and rededicate firmly to solve them. JAI HIND

For everybody criticism comes before the appreciation.

This is a good parade and lot of people wait to see this. It is a national pride. I am not sure how much money they spent. Whatever it is well spent

What ever VS said in the fist line has to be addressed.

Before that is being addressed let me ask one question.

If there is a small accident how many people will be willing to take the person to the hospital urgently? What is the value of our lives compared to other developed countries? Even government is saying we come cheap (That is why we are getting tech jobs. Not because US love us).

criticism is healthy for the country...for it to grow. the country needs more critics like vijay who don't bank of past laurels of the country. who do not portray a false picture that...hey my country is the greatest...when lot of things are going haywire. however, i would also like to add that critcism alone wouldn't suffice. we should all contribute to the growth of our country. Just by talking good abt my country doesn't make me a patriot...a true patriot is the person who contributes to the wellness of his country.

Politicians are destroying India%u2019s pride
by Paul Joseph on Jan 26, 2007 05:39 PM  | Hide replies

I am really proud of an Indian. I and my other Indian colleagues are always trying to keep up India%u2019s image here in UK, by explaining great success and cultures of our mother land. But when I saw the great pictures of India%u2019s grand Republic celebrations, one British colleague asked me why A MAN SEEMS DIRECTLY FROM BATH ROOM WITH A TOWEL ON SHOULDER standing with VIPs and shaking the hand of chief guest. My dear brothers, I really ashamed from my foot to head. It was Mr.A.K.Antony the defence minister. I don%u2019t understand where he got this ugly towel to cover his shoulder? Is there no Shervani, suite or blazers manufacturing in India to prevent cold? Or as the British colleagues said is he coming directly from Bath room? Didn%u2019t he get enough time to dress properly? SHAMEFUL Mr. Antony, SHAMEFUL. Let him look around and see how other people including our prime minister and other officers are dressing. It is these kinds of politicians are destroying India%u2019s pride. Luckily he did not wear a LUNKI. Hope Mr.Antony will read this and enlightened his brain.

I think as an Indian you need to be proud about our culture, food habits and dressing skills also. Your British colleague need not know all this but as an indian , you are supposed to know and educate them. Can you advice British Ministers about their dressing styles. Be proud to be an Indian Man .

I personally felt funny when I saw that Japanese dress or that Irish pipers' dress or that Fijian dress, but did understand their custom.
It's us expatriates' duty to explain our country's values to whomever ridicule/question it or wanting to know it.

Mr. Paul Joseph should have told the British guy about various dresses that we wear. This was one of them.

What is the problem with the Lunki?. What is the problem with the dress he wore? Was it obscene? I have been to London and have seen people from various countries with various dresses.

The guy might have not seen this kind dress. The way expressed his feeling was a figure of speech. You took it literally (may be you are new in London). Since you said you were a proud Indian you should have explained to him.

Now think yourself who should be ashamed. You or Mr. Antony?

Hindus/Indians are perhaps the only ones who integrate with anything foreign so quickly & instinctively. It's a good thing that we live as Romans in Rome. But it's unfortunate that most of us forget who we are and mock or portray our own customs & dresscodes as inferior to western customs or suits/jeans.

I've been travelling outside India for more than 6 years now and I do integrate/learn/understand all the "outside" customs, but in the same time won't ever forget my roots & culture.

If Paul is from North, I wont blame him & would suggest him to know what it takes to wear an anghavastra(so called towel) in all 4 3 southern regions of our great diversified Nation.

I'm Proud to be an Indian.

My dear Brothers, I am really surprised in the way you understand (misunderstand) the things and the filthy words used by some fellow Indians. I was not blaming any Indian culture or dressing style. I am an agent of Indian culture in a foreign country. I am also wearing only local dress when I am in my village (in India). But we need to dress according to the situation. Somebody asked me whether I will be ashamed with my mother%u2019s dark skin (See how he understood my comments). Never with skin colour. But will be ashamed if she doesn%u2019t dress in appropriate way. I don%u2019t care if she dresses with faded old dress with some curries on it in home. But I will be ashamed if she wearing it in a function. But she has the common sense to dress appropriate way. Let me ask how many of you will go for an interview with paijama and dhothi? If that is the Indian dress why all our soldiers marched with a foreign dress? Mr. Antony is in an executive position as he is the defence minister. He has no problem for dressing like Mr.Manmohan singh or Rajive Gandhi. India%u2019s Republic day is a celebration watching by the entire world. That is not a party local committee meeting. Once Chinese were holding tight on their national dress. But now you see, they realised the changed world and changed their style too. Any way using some filthy language to a criticism is not our Indian way. You are most welcome to criticise me in a decent language.

In western world it is clearly defined for meetings. What is that in India? If there is none then everybody can wear what they want to wear as long as it is not obscene.

Paul, it is you who are mis-understanding. Would it be appropriate for Manmohan Singh to wear a Coat and Tie for this event? Why did Nehru prefer a Nehru suit instead of a Saville Row suit?
He was showcasing India. Anthony is showcasing his home state. What he was wearing is appropriate formal wear where he comes from. The fact that it is not recognized as such is very much your problem, not his.
I am utterly shocked that you dont realize something as simple as this. I would have expected you would have seem something of the rest of India, at least on TV!
