I don't like to discuss about others.Just take the situation of me.I am doing my masters and i don't now what my constitution says..Did you think its a fault of me? I don't think so,because I had no opportunity to learn my sweet constitution. It comes when we use it...When the use comes, when our elders n rulers talk about it...So, many people like me are in the same situation...So,I request our beloved government to implement some programs which are mandatory to know like this..Just finally i want to say if some thing is new then it easily stimulate the interest in the individuals...thank you Rediff for giving me this opportunity..

rewriting constitution
by syed samiulla hussaini on Jan 25, 2007 03:31 PM

Its is good idea that our constitution should be rewritten. But my question is that whether it will obeyed by the people especially the top politicians holding key positions? It is very important to involve equaly every section of the society irrespective of cast, creed, sex, education and monetery status in the society. My suggestion is that the present constitution is extremely good enough if it is truly understood and followed judiciasly.

AWARENESS of our Existing Constitutional Values is Need of the Hour

Should we rewrite our Indian Constitution?
It is a very interesting question for the young generation of India.

But, before thinking to re-write our present constitution, we should think about making our constitution known to common public in order to understand at least the basic RIGHTS AND DUTIES of every Indian Citizen. So, as an Indian Citizen, I would like to voice my opinion in this context.

There is a question I want to pose to explain my viewpoint with regard to our constitution. First, how many of us know about the FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES upon which our beloved nation is built?

As an answer to my question, the Fundamental Principles of our constitution are as follows:
We, the PEOPLE OF INDIA had constituted our nation into a %u201CSOVEREIGN SOCIALIST SECULAR DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC%u201D in order to secure JUSTICE, LIBERY and EQUALITY to all citizens and to promote FRATERNITY among all citizens. This is the fundamental philosophy of Indian Constitution and it has great meanings.

SOVEREIGN means Freedom from the control of foreign powers and also Freedom to form the government which is elected by the people. SOCIALIST means Social Equality of status and opportunities without any discrimination based on caste, color, creed, sex, religion and language and also Economic Equality through proper distribution of wealth enabling a decent living standard for all citizens. SECULAR means the Government stands for Neutrality and does not have a specific Official Religion and therefore promotes Religious Equality & Tolerance among the citizens and offers the citizens the Right to follow, preach and propagate any religion of their choice without discrimination. DEMOCRATIC means the Government is elected by the adult citizens of India through Voting System and every adult is eligible without any discrimination to vote for the Local, State and Central government representatives of his/her choice. REPUBLIC means the Head of the Nation is appointed through Election for a specific Period of Time and not for his/her lifetime and not appointed on Hereditary basis.

Also we stated that India is constituted to secure Social, Economic and Political JUSTICE to all citizens. Again we stated that India is constituted to secure LIBERTY of Thought, Expression, Belief, Faith and Worship, to all citizens. And we stated that India is constituted to secure EQUALITY of Status and Opportunity to all citizens. And we stated that India is constituted to promote FRATERNITY which means to form alliance among the citizens to assure the Dignity of the Individual and the Unity and Integrity of the Nation.

So, this is the Core Philosophy of the constitution of our wonderful nation. What a degree of Morality, Justice and Unity it preaches! What a valid & good reason it gives for the very Existence of our Nation on this earth!! But, we, most Indians, are unaware of this supreme philosophy and principle. We are illiterate about our own Constitution which is our %u201CSACRED NATIONAL BOOK%u201D. And this ILLITERACY has been the ROOT CAUSE for all Problems, Crimes and Obstacles that is stopping our overall Prosperity and Development.

So, let us forget the past. From now onwards, let us take steps to learn, propagate and implement our present constitutional values among all our citizens so that the world may know what our nation is built for. Let us bring the knowledge of our constitution to our school and college students. Let us start practicing our constitution in our daily life. Let us stand united irrespective of the diversities in our language, religion and class for the common cause of keeping our nation as a Model to the World in promoting equality and justice. If we face problems practically while implementing it, then we will think about making some needed amendments to our constitution to cope-up with the technological changes. Otherwise, RE-WRITING the existing good constitution, even without trying to practice what is being said in it, is NOT WISE AND REASONABLE as of now. Awareness of our Existing Constitutional Values is Need of the Hour

May God bless our nation with Unity, Integrity and Prosperity. And we are proud to be Indians.

still pondering???
by k vinod hegde on Jan 25, 2007 02:58 PM

of course "yes".

its an interesting issue to come up with after all that reservation roar.

what surprises me is that why anyone has not bothered to attempt such a CRUCIAL issue for so long.

Above all, we (Indians) feel very proud to be called as "BACKWARDS" .

AND DON'T YOU THINK EVERYTHING IN INDIA IS BASED ON "CASTE OR RELIGION".
THERE IS A LAW FOR EACH SET LAWS FOR EACH RELIGION
AND I WONDER WHEN WOULD WE BE HAVING AN "INDIAN LAW"

Rewriting the constitution - A honest Debate
by op suman on Jan 25, 2007 02:26 PM

Our nation is constantly grapple with the basic paradoxes faced by the Founding Fathers. The truths were than and are now more self evident than the means of implementing them.So it was in 1947 and so it is today. We the people- the elected and the electorate - are both heirs and trustees , beneficiaries and benefactors must participate in this attracting debate. The issue requires thougtful consideration of all Indians who refuse to take lightly their resoponsibilities as citizens. Let the nation debate the issue thoroughly.

Endless subject.
by Ajay Deshpande on Jan 25, 2007 02:12 PM

We cannot decide anything. We can only discuss. Unless & until the leader who is strong, sensible & well wisher of our country should not emerge, we are helpless. We don%u2019t have an option because we are middle class. We can only vote but we cannot stop corruption, castism, racism. Even if somebody among us goes to parliament he will also do the same which other members doing because there no scope for thinking independently & the coalition Government is the example of it. Communism is the good solution for our country but it will never work because our frame of mind will never accept it. The divide & rule policy is assorted in the grass root of Politics even at the village level from where our politics starts.
Everybody in our country wants a peaceful life & happy life and they are trying to leave it by bribing each other. They know it is not ethical but then what? they have no option. We can only say Chalo Aaj Ka Din To Accha Gaya!

Jai Hind.

Ajay.

Yes it needs to...
by Deva Pratap Saathivayal on Jan 25, 2007 01:55 PM

At the time of writing consitution, India was very fragmented and not all views may have been heard. Consituion needs to re-written having heterogenous society in mind and a place to accomodate new entrants to Inida. (Literally saying, new consitution should pull few of our neighbouring coutries to join Indian Union)

Should the constitution be rewritten!
by ansuman satpathy on Jan 25, 2007 01:52 PM

Please spare us all the trouble of learning by rote, the tenets of constitution once again.

Let me ask first:Is our constitution entirely creditable? It is an amalgam of the supposed good in some of the existing constitutions!

How on earth do you expect a constitution to eradicate poverty, illiteracy, malnutrition and crime that have been with us since independence.

The onus has to be with the law keepers and the ethics of the now brat-pack of politicians.
