With the adoption of small family norms, the population of brahmins has already started coming down in a big way. Those who were normally born with 5-6 brothers and sisters, today they are single child to their parents or at best have a brother or sister for sibling. In another 10-20 years with the demise of the present brahmin population of 60 age, you should see the percentage of brahmins falling below 1 percent. The tamil brahmins who are brought up with the psychology of killing even a mosquito as sin, theirs is the cleanest of hands which has never shed blood. "Rich" amongst the brahmins being minority of minority, it is normally poverty which used to be their constant companion. But it was God's Grace that they were brilliant and in later part of their lives started reaping "Knowledge is Power" when they acquired material wealth by dint of sheer brain power. I am also one such Tamil Brahmin who had only poverty for memory of my youth. I must not forget to mention here my non-brahmin (people say he is SC today, but I never even understood its meaning those days) friend and classmate Chidambaram from whom I regularly used to eat idlis in order to extinguish that ever-present burning hunger of my stomach. Although I am now blessed with many friends -- both brahmin and non-brahmin -- my best friend is Ilango (a Naicker from Pondy). He used to tell his mother, "Amma paappan Nathan vandurukkan. Mudalla avanukku tunnaradukku aedhachum kodu" and she used to bring a plate full of home-made eatables and fruits and a glass of cow milk. He is generally proud to introduce me to all his relatives as his best friend and so am I.

Of course in the present highly politicized atmosphere the easiest target for the society is to take on those who are weak and those who cannot hit back. Who else fits the bill like `T' than a Brahmin? However, I request all my non-brahmin friends to touch their conscience and try to even remember one instance in their entire life when a Brahmin has harmed them in any manner. A brahmin may not have helped anybody -- because they were/are themselves in a position of receiving help -- definitely they would not have harmed anybody in any manner. Unless one is wont to imagine harm where none exists, I can very happily say that the Brahmins are more sinned against than sinning!

venom

going through this discussion,we get an idea of whose thinking is full of venom.at this juncture ,if such arrogance is manifesting itself, imagine the vanity and arrogance 50 years back.
the magnitude of the arrogance and vanity must have necessitated periyar s methods.
the racism inherent in all the views is most appallingly strident.
going through a few posts will bring out the true picture of who is bashing who.

...........

There were so many cool OBC guys who were good in everything they did. Sometimes even out performed few FC guys. Sometime they didn't, as there was not a necessary all the time to be at top.

Now, in the name of OBC bashing, FCs have enraged the OBCs. Let us see. From now on, every OBC will be cautious and not be carless to let anything loose. Atleast I am going to make sure I always top wherever I go. After all, performance is only directly proportional to the amount of effort and little bit of luck (which is not biased!).

Not the whole truth
by Ramaswamy E on May 02, 2007 10:36 AM  Permalink

The Nazi policy was 'Keep on repeating a lie and it becomes the truth'.
The policy of the followers of EVR is 'Keep telling part truth and it becomes the whole truth'.
By harping on social discrimination practised by Brahmins they are erasing all memories of the atrocities committed by Tamil Caste Non-Brahmins against Dalits (especially the landlord and business communities - many of these communities are today claiming OBC status!!!) For centuries untouchability has been practised by all castes against Dalits - but EVR started his movement in protest against the feeding of Brahmin children separately in the orphanage run by VVS Iyer NOT BECAUSE of the plight of Dalits.
And a film on 'Periyar' which does not include the Salem 'enlightenment' campaign in which hoardings of NUDE Hindu Deities in carnal posture, and the garlanding of idols of deities with slippers etc , the sudden attacks on Brahmin ladies in Tuticorin (in 1954 or thereabout) points to the duplicity of the producer and the sponsors who are trying to portray an incomplete picture of the man! In many of his political speeches (especially when addressing Muslims in Tamilnadu & offering to be their leader) EVR also said that Gandhi was not even equal to the dust on Jinnah's feet. These are significant points that cant be left out in any honest portrayal of the man.

'Periyar was against Brahminism, not Brahmins'
by Subramanian N on May 02, 2007 10:31 AM  Permalink

Sir,I have seen Periyar and I have read about Periyar. He was not against Brahminism but he was very much against Brahmins, an innocent community and not a rebelion community. I have seen thru my own naked eyes, at that I was 11 yrs old, pulling the sacred thread of Brahmins(when they were waiting for clients wearing only towels to cover their upper parts)and cutting the "Kudimi".i have seen even Asphalt poured on Brahmins in Triplicane. All these have been done against Brahmins since they are innocent and does not have the muscle power.I can also blame Brahmins since they are not united. But Periyar didnt have the guts to play these tricks against any other Religion like Muslims, Christians , Sikhs, etc. For every religion there are different sub-caste and their own belief. No body has right to question this.He is very particular against Hindus and Hindu Gods. Hindu Gods were adorned with chappals and taken out in Procession in Salem and Coimbatore. It was published in Thuglak then. Why he has not extended the same to other Religions? If he has extended he would not have been there alive for so long.
The writer (IAS officer )does not know all these negetive things done by Periyar.
