I agree with this article
by Rupa on Apr 14, 2004 02:36 PM

I agree with every bit of what has been stated in the article. There does not seem to be too much to this guy's credit, but for the fact that he belongs to the gandhi family ! I donot understand, is that the only criterion for u to become a leader! I agree there are lots of families in this *business* but well even they judged on what have they done for the country, for the people.
Congress came up with the *bahu* last time and now the *beta*.. lets see where do they take India.
I just want to say that bringing someone to power just because he is someone's son or wife.. doesnot make sense; the person has to have more to his credit than this !

i must say this is a very good article..atleast i hope that educated people of india who use their pc in their everyday life vote intellegently after reading this article...i sincerely believe that people should do atleast five years of public service before entering into elections...on wat basis should people elect him...just for his education in some well reputed colleges and that also because of the family name....its ridiculous!!!!!! and thats why i think they go and contest election in a suburb place like amethi!!!...and ofcourse not in a constituency like delhi south or mumbai south from where i am sure they would never win...neway kudos to ur article and hoping to read more of your writings

Rahul Gandhi
by Nanda Kishore on Apr 14, 2004 12:46 PM

Good one, Rajeev; certain readers have accused you of paranoia about Rahul's (or Juanita's, for that matter!) prime ministerial ambitions or credentials. I wonder whether these same worthies, if they were around then, ever thought of Rajiv Gandhi as the PM before events led to that. Consider this, even with all their senior leaders, Congress had to choose Rajiv to become the PM following Mrs.Gandhi's assassination. And to those who say that Rahul's education is certainly better than many other politicians, well in that case let him come up through the ranks like they did. No one else in the Congress even stands a chance of becoming the PM, yet this guy comes in and is straight away talked about as a future PM. What the Congress fails to see is that this has now become the primary reason for their failure to form a coalition to compete with the NDA (not that I'm excited by the prospect!). Compare him to people like Jaswant Singh, Yashwant Sinha, M M Joshi, Arun Jaitley from the BJP and even Manmohan Singh, Kapil Sibal, Sheila Dixit etc from his own party!

Give the kid a break

Most of Rajeev's derision seem to stem from tha fact that Rahul Gandhi dropped out of Harvard, while he (Rajeev) did not. And the argument that politicians who manage to stay in school and graduate make better leaders is quite atrocious (Benazir a better leader than Rajiv was?). And it wasn't like Zulfi and Indira were sitting across the table alone during the 1971 gabfest.

The Dan Qualye deviation did not make much sense either.

And the Juanita gibe was totally uncalled for. You made your judgement on one photograph?? And even if they don't have a supernal relationship, so what?

I could go on and on. I guess I had higher expectations from a Harvardian.

Good Article

Hi Rajeev,

Another Wonderful article from yoou saying the truth. People might have not liked the article but then you have to be courageous to accept the truth........not a character of Congressmen. You have to think for the country rather than just a person.....again not a character found in Congressmen they are busy making money than making country.

I wish India had been ruled by ministers like Arun Shourie, Arun Jaitley, Advani, Jaswant Singh in yesteryears as well then we would had been a better country by now.

But its better late then neer. Hope NDA comes back to power and India moves on the road to development.

Jai Hindusthan
Jai Bharat

Come one come all... we are here to be fooled
by Kardi on Apr 14, 2004 08:20 AM

Mr Shrinivasan loves to raise questions, especially tough ones for the Gandhi dynasty. I do not see anything wrong with this column. As shown clearly through links Rahuls education is ambiguous. Its ok not to be educated to be a politician in India, but its absolutely wrong to portray that a person is a Harvard graduate etc without being clear about his degrees. Thats fooling the public and if people like being fooled (as its clear from the comments) well one cant educate all fools. Politicians lives are always of interest and when they are enigmatic characters like Rahul Gandhi its bound to happen. If population of India is magnanimous enough to let Rahul experiment on their account I would say there arent bigger fools anywhere. As long as the people of India are naïve enough to let a person who hasnt even lived in India for most of his life (adult or childhood) represent them, spend their money and take decisions for them, likes of Rahul Gandhi will keep flourishing. Thank you Mr. Shrinivasan for at least bringing up these questions. As always you havent disappointed a few of us.

Call Spade a Spade

Some people have posed questions Why Rahul's education ? Well because Congress harps on it, Harvard Harvard and Harvard. No one Says Atal is from XYZ university or Advani is from ABC university. Gandhi family thinks itself as class aprt and survives on lies. How can you people support this party looking at the histroy behind us. And then u say BJP is power hungry, well its power hungry but atleast it swears by India. Looks the reforms it did in Intelligence gatehering, Miltary affairs, econmoic and nuclear security. SOme things have been achieved in 5 years which CONgress didnt no acheive in 45 years. People say what BJP did was founded by congress. If BJP was in power for 40 years we could have done much more. Reason ? BJP leaders are more tied to India then CONgress leaders.

Indians are trying to be cool and say we dont discriminate and we will except A foreign born PM and forging borm PM's daugther in law, and going to be Indian Firsy Lady. Well Dear countrymen no self respecting society or country allows that, its a natural human tendency that we humans have an attachment to the country we are born in a nd our parents are born. Hypociritical thought wont help our society.

Young Indian Leadership
by KH on Apr 14, 2004 06:43 AM

Yes Rahul Gandhi is certainly charming to look at but is that all we are looking for in a leader?? I hope not!! We need shrewd young politicians who are neither confused like BJP nor lost like Congress, we need someone who is not so obsessed with our Hindu identity, and someone who is young and modern enough to bring about social and political improvements in India. I have my doubts if Rahul Gandhi even so much as gave these serious issues much of a thought. I have nothing against him as a person, but please be careful before selecting a likeable, naive person for your Prime Minister ... look whats happening in the US.
