intelligence
by venkat on Sep 02, 2003 09:09 AM

Yes the intelligence has eroded. I think that professionally qualified personnel should be recruited by CBI and allotted to states for intelligenc work. Engineers and CA's should be given chance in CBI and alloted to states to work exclusively in Intelligence wing and Special branch.
There should not be age limit for this.

This will definitely boost the intelligence network and aid the security agencies. Some innovativeness has to be there with all governments, instead of recruitment through UPSC and State public service comission. Why cant there be a direct recruitment of personnel for intelligence. That is the only way the security can be good and effectve

The real issues behind bomb-blasts
by Dharmender on Sep 02, 2003 08:19 AM

I agree in totality with Mr Balachandran that we people, including Mr Advani, shouldn't blame Pakistan and ISI for each and every incident taking place in the country. It's ridiculous in world's eye. It makes us a laughing stock in the leading nations capitals. Also places our security and intelligence agencies in the dock. It's the time our political leader wake up and accept the reality that there is a section in the society that feels insecured and marginalised. We have to address their grievances and make them feel secure. Incidents like pogram that took place in Gujrat after Godhra have to be dealt with an iron fist to make sure they do not reoccur. All the guilty people, irrespective of their religion and caste, should be brought to justic. The minority section should also integrate with the mainsteam and shelve the shackles they have built around. Their main emphasis should be on the growth of their community thus effectively realising the the overall growth of the nation. A nation cannot grow as long as a bigger section of the society remains backward. This nation has a great future and we all have to contribute toward its making.

Mangesh T. Mhaskar
V Balchandran interview
by Mangesh T. Mhaskar on Sep 02, 2003 03:09 AM

I do not want to deprive Mr. Balchandran of his nostalgic feelings about his days in RAW. Immediately after the bomb blasts, oldies are on to Mumbai police trying to tarnish their image by every means. If intelligence was so good in Balchandran's days, then why didn't they raise a far-reaching and long-lasting network or practices or procedures? Didn't he or his then colleagues failed?? He accuses Advani of provocative statements. But how can he accues the entire state of failing to provide good governance and thus end up making grossly inaccurate and provocative statements? And on the backdrop of all the rhetoric against Mumbai police, the fact is that they have solved the case in a week's time. Ask Balchandran to compare this to America's intelligence network where CIA, FBI were groping in the dark for many "DAYS". These days it seems it is a style for veteran soldiers or spies, to say "Oh, it was sooo good in our days". This ignoramous lot should be made aware that they themselves should be held responsible for failing to create a long-standing infrastructure and practices in the world of intelligence. Mr. Balchandran's comments are not acceptable to me.

Police Intelligence poor
by Shiva on Sep 02, 2003 02:55 AM

I have completely agree with Mr.Balasubramanyam points on current indian security and the way politicians are handling it.May be this is the reason why our deputy Pm can't reach to PM level because of immatur statement even on important matters.
Corruption in police dept is another cause of Intelligence Failure.
Don't pin point on any other country like US there also bomb were exploding.
Frankly speaking they are not good in Human Intelligency System. They are good in Machine and Operating Systems.Where you have to feed the data's and expect the results from computer.
So no need to think that US is intelligent and we are poor with techniques.
Lets these politicians wake for the country's sake do their best.

Excellent interview.

This is really a fact given by honorable intelligence officer. This interview should be sent to various political parties,Chief ministers and LK Advani.

They should understand that In fact ISI is not strong but we are weak with corrupted Burocratic,Political and policing system acrosss the country.

If fight against terrorism is our no1 priority then why all these people are not giving no1 priority to protect our nation and citizen?

India is running on no of raised fingers for selfish gains of rulers and their supporters not on qualitative upbringing of people at large.

The retired honest officers should open the eyes of people.

Oh Please!
by Anand on Sep 01, 2003 11:47 PM

The biggest reason India is having terrorist problems is because pseudo-visionaries like Mr Balachandran cannot see naked truth. (Pseudo visionaries need not be dumb, infact they are academically very intelligent, but lack a lot of common sense).

The truth is that Pakistan has been able to get at the throat of India because of the support from local muslims here. Dialogues and talks with traitors will take you no where...this is an established truth from history. Mr Balachandran's suggestion that the govt hold dialogues with rogue organisations like SIMI is...well words fail me, but I can use 'ridiculous'.

Islamic terrorists of INDIAN origin are equally brainwashed, and the govt cannot talk sense into them with dialogues. Their brainwashing originates, not thru Osama, but at a much basic level.
So to tackle terrorism, the first step we need to take is to first pour sense into these brainwashed Hindus.
Anand!

Talking with terrorists
by Swaroop on Sep 01, 2003 11:18 PM

With all due respect to Mr.Balachandran, the government of India should never talk with terrorists who resort to violence. If there is any aggrieved party with genuine, it should try to redress its grievances through democratic means and not through violence. Talking to people who indulge in violence will only encourage these acts and will defeat the purpose of the dialogue. However, if the aggrieved party shuns violence, then by all means, the government (following Raj Dharma) should try to redress the problems as soon as possible.

Police intelligence is poor
by Y.Poornachandra Rao on Sep 01, 2003 11:13 PM

Sir,
The police can not domuch without the cooperation of the public. The police is not interested in getting the necessary information.Neither does the public have much faith in the police.
Unless the public feels that the police does not harass persons giving valuable information,it is not going to take the risk of providing the much needed local intellegence.
Today people are becoming so busy that they do not even know who stays in the next house leave alone knowing what theydo. If we keep our eyes and ears open it is not difficult to smell any unusual activities or movements of outside persons in the locality.
If the police does not enroll the society in ite policing, why only Mumbai, anywhere the bomb blasts can occur.
