Grow up !
by KD on Jun 13, 2003 09:42 PM

So, what the author wants to suggest is that the four southern states should be forced to be as backward, illiterate and anarchic as the northern states.
The next thing he would like to do is to transfer Laloo to Hyderabad as the chief minister and Mayawati to Kerala so that we all are in the same morass.
That sounds like a wise move !

Saddistic Approach

Mr swamy is pin pointing in the things that are true and hardhitting ,they may be facts but the analysis looks a little twisted. The reason that it has been difficult to secure the nation on that frontier is not because of lack of will but because of terrain.I dont know if Mr swamy has been there in that area, but i have been there right near pakistani border in Uri.It is most beautiful and difficult place in the world. We had binoculars with us and we used to try to look at the peaks of those huge mountains, and guess what we used to see people running with there cattles at those high peaks. From a naked eye you cant even see if there is anybody walking at that height. We should not analize other peoples work if we dont know how to do it.Its tough to work under those conditions.Secondly about the south union.I have to admit Mr Swamy does have a point there.Instead of having a south union like that it is better to have union for advanced states of India. So instead of having a union of south and north seperate we should form unions based on the developments of the varoius statesLike
1 Andhra,Karnataka,Punjab,Gujrat,Mahrashtra,TamilNadu
2 Kerela,Hryana,Himachal,West Bengal
and so on

Southern Economic Union
by southindian on Jun 13, 2003 09:16 PM  | Hide replies

As it is, there is a separate South-india in the minds of North-indians let alone in the minds of South-indians. It is quite natural to happen like this. And a separate geo-political south-india is bound to happen. It is only a matter of time.

India then and now.

I agree with the authors view that India is more exposed to international terrorism, infact the whole world is having this problem, now a days when the nature of violance has changed from drug traficing and comunist/anti-communist etc. and now it has taken a face of muslim vs. anti muslim then India has become more vulnerable. This is the time when India need to show its unity and strength, instead of having inter-state issues and separism.
We still need to get into one nation mentality, as a nation I think we are still not mature enough.
Need to bring the basic education to our people and certainly we need to have a strict code of conduct for our politicians and infact media needs to help in our national strength.
We should understand that the nation is above anyone, political parties and politicians changes generations changes but nation is always there.

I agree with the writer that India's defense of the border has been lacking and wanting. But it has also to do with the lack of Political and bureaucratic will power. It is a pity the Armed forces have to ask the Govt about using the amount of force. It shd be independent of such shackles, in a classic battle you do not ask your king what implements to use to evict out invaders!! You use any amount of force you deem necessary and get results to your political boosses, period!! The armed forces of our country has been used more like a chapraasi, guarding statues & corrupt politicans, saluting people!! It is high time they became a little bit more independent and righteous & take their decisions regarding security of the country on their own, and not run back to the Govt for approval making sure they do not fall out of favor with the Govt. As regards the Southern states forming an economic union, I term it as a positive step in a democracy the states are free to do as they wish since they are obligated to the state's welfare. Why do we not see such enthusiasm in the other BIMARU states? And why the mention of scuttling?

To whomsoever it may concern....
by RAMKUMAR SRIDHARAN on Jun 13, 2003 08:03 PM

We are just in the tip of an iceberg status in our economic boom. I am just happy that we are forging ahead a little bit. I never seen or heard anything which is in a state that needs to be curbed or curtailed at this momemt as mentioned in the article. If southern states enter a economic union is it illegal? is it suggestive of separation?. I think everyone of us know that the our strength lies only in our unity inspite of our diversity and even assuming southern states wants to separate in future, I dont think the people will accept it first, leave alone the government of India. Thouhgts of separation is nothing new to India, it happened in Punjab, all the naxalites and Eastern states are saying this everyday now and we know the kashmir case very well. For once, I think the economic cooperation looks right to me, inspite of language diversity we are trying to cooperate in places where we can and we should be proud of it. I guess it is time people from poor states (educated people) forge aliance and make their respective governments do something beneficial to their people.
