Mani Ratnam is easily the most overrated director. I really don't understand how his movies are any different from the regular Masala flicks. The only difference is the cinematography is remarkable.
Right from his debut pagal Nilavu to Raavanan there has always been unwanted elements included.
The separate comedy track in both Pagal Nilavu and Agni Natchathiram was just for commercial reasons. It was plain nasty!
He never had the guts to make a song-less film. Most of his films had item numbers with actresses in skimpy clothes again just for commercial reasons. Pani Vizhum Iravu in Mouna Ragam, September Madham in Alaipayuthey, Nila adhu vanathu mele in Nayakan, Arabic Kadaloram in Bombay etc are some examples that come to mind. The songs were totally unnecessary. I don't know why he never gets criticized for it.
His last decent film was indeed Kannathil Muthamittal. After KM he is not working with actors who would be apt for the roles. He rather now wants to work only with bankable stars. If not how could a director of his caliber would even consider actresses with zero acting talent like Trisha and Ash.
So how exactly he is different from the masala filmmakers? Please enlighten me. His films also have the same standard fights, songs and comedy.

Cannot give any statistics to back up. But feel Mani Ratnam and Subash Ghai are almost on the same track. Both give beautiful cinematic appeal to their movies, but their current movies over the last couple of year are not exactly hits. They seem to have lost touch with the 'aam junta' expectations for around 5-7 years. Yeah on hindsight can add Mahesh Bhatt to this who probably lost the touch more than 10 years back.
I won't rate Raavanan as even one of Vikram's best works. He was excellent in Pithamagan. But here all he does is hamming. The person who needs to be blamed is Mani! Ash's cleavage show was seriously disgusting. Reminds Manisha in Uyire Uyire song in Bombay. The way she was made to run in the song! Don't know why he exploits his heroines.
Movie sucks big time. Movie can be watched for cinematography and music. Ash as usual over reacts, Mani's screenplay and Suhasini's dialogues are awful.

Mr.Trend setter.. can you pls give me the names of some of the good movies here.. I'm curious to see what can be better in a movie than it was in Raavanan!
of unflattering reviews for 'Bollywood' movies from diffferent critics proves that the stupidest among all commoners are those that regularly watch hindi movies !!!
