is raavanan better than raavan?
by Vijayalakshmi on Jun 21, 2010 02:23 PM

Wel... thats teh question runnig through my mind since i watched the tamil version yesterday.. welll... unlike usual masala movies, raavanan is quiet a classy movie with classy touch of manirathnam and his crew. cinematography is excellent and it is wat takes away all the applause. well... performances are also up to the mark. i seldom like aish's acting and in this movie, she has tried to portray the character given to her well.. and talking about vikram, he is the soul of the movie and carries his character brilliantly. prabhu and priyamani are also impressive in their performances. prithvi plays the real cop - mean yet dedicated. well.. i have read other's review and, not to my surprise, all the guys and girls here except for a few are regular audience - they like typical masala movies, with all style but no substance. although raavanan is quiet a predictable movie, but the way the entire plot has been woven, i would say that raavanan is worth watching... and to the question is raavanan better than raavan, i would say a big YES. coz the reviews i got about raavan from my friends, abhishek has just screwed it up with his over acting! unlike vikram, who has stepped into his character's shoes brilliantly.

Pseudo directors and their half boiled thoughts !!!
by globalian on Jun 21, 2010 11:28 AM

In this entire world of epics, how come 'Ramayan' alone inspires the great director Maniratnam? He was previously inspired by 'Mahabaratha' ( Even he has copied the scenes in Mahabaratha such as Kunthi Devi sends her son born out of illegal relationship in a box ) in his previous tamil movie - Thalapathi. He might want to depict the ten head Raavan for 10 different personalities. This might be his one line idea behind the inspiration of this film. Akira Kurasawa film's also works on various plot and registers the human emotions. But they are well knit with social themes and they will be well discussed. These pseudo directors are half educated in this.

Ravanan

This movie is undoubtedly unfurnished.
Aside the hardwork endured by the entire team, I could not compromise with this movie. In spite of dazing photography, this movie is unworthy to watch.
When dialogue irritates the viewers , BGM is the another vexation. I am surprised how Maniratnam has placed the 'Uruguthe' song in such a situation, it's a tragedy.

Pavithra is front bencher
by sapna cool on Jun 21, 2010 10:49 AM  | Hide replies

Pavithra is clearly not an intelligent reviewers, but a mere front bencher to whom an Aadavan or Singam or even a Vettaikkaran will appeal tremendously. Do not take her word for movies like Raavanan. It is worth your ticket money. Go watch it once because it is too gooa a movie experience to miss!

I watched the movie over the weekend, and it is true to Pavithra's review. Only if you are intellectually challenged will you be able to appreciate the movie beyond its natural scenery. There is hardly any twist and turn in the movie, and you never get an opportunity to relate with the core characters. I was very disappointed.

I wish MR had spend atleast week's time on the script... One point is clear MR is flabbergasted by aish's beauty and is very obvious in the movie...Actually at the climax I sat up thinking ... wow .. then whats going to happen next....
And man...they switched on the lights in the theatre .. and every one started waking out.. Only then did i realise that the movie is over...Most of them who praise this movie are praising for the sake of it or they are bound to praise for its cinematography...
The movie had
no story
no thrilling
no music

Good acting by prithvi and vikram...aish was useless as usual...

Photography at its best

what rediff's reviewers lacks ?
by param on Jun 21, 2010 06:23 AM

Are these people from different galaxy or what? why they are missing to review the nice movies with perspective of regular audience. Ok.. so what, if the dialogueis are not upto mark and minor glitches in the screenplay. You can't take the credit away from Mani just for that. This is an unique, classy & styish movie.
I don't know what made Pavithra to dislike Aish's acting more than Rohini's dubbing...I found it bit irritating and suhashini's dialogues doesn't help at any level. I would easily give 4 stars any day for this movie.. and 4.5 when it is compared to other stupid Indian masala mmovies.

His creativity is also questionable. Everyone knows Thalapathy was based on Karnan's characterization from Mahabharatha. Iruvar was based on the TN political icons MGR - karunanidhi relationship. I dunno why the film is hailed as a masterpiece. Utter crap!) Now Raavanan/Raavan based on the epic Ramayana. Why can't he seriously think anything original?!

I prefer both KB and Bharathiraja any day over him.

Never writes dialogues for his movies. I'm sure everyone misses Sujatha. Man the dialogues of Raavanan were awful. How could he make Suhasini handle dialogues? Sh!t !

MR can never be put in the league of great Indian filmmakers like Satyajit Ray, Gulzar, Bimal Roy, Shyam Benegal etc

I never seen any movie of the filmmakers you've listed. But, I can say one thing for sure.. technical quality of Mani's movie is somthing every Indian filmmaker would be proud of.
