Its a good movie
by sangeetha on Jun 22, 2010 11:43 PM

I saw the Tamil version today. Its a great movie. The nuances, shades of characters, performances, everything is great. This is not just a retelling of ramayan. It is ramayan from a different perspective. I can understand how the symbolism can be lost in Hindi version. Just the difference in costumes itself will spoil the Lanka feel evident in Raavanan. Vikram looks like Ravan. he looks royal, reminds of the Asura King whereas Abhishek reminds of Dacoit. Prithviraj also looks suave and charming, symbolizing Ram. Aishwarya has done a great performance, but looks a bit old.

Everything is good except Climax. Some confusion might had been happened during the shooting of climax. Every one has done their best. But karthik's role disappoints.... Exellent Cinematography, wonderful Art direction, fantastic back ground score and songs, great costume designs and make ups, mind blowing stunts.....beatiful locations....only the screen play of last ten minutes is not appreciable....other than that Mani sir has done his best....masala movie fans won't like this movie....watch it without any expectations, u will like the movie....

Other 3 reasons
by Sushagar Chells on Jun 21, 2010 04:55 PM

8. Interestingly, Aishwarya Rai will dub in her own voice for the Tamil version while Vikram is all set to speak Hindi in Raavan.

9. Another highlight is Prabhu and Karthi, co-stars in the blockbuster Mani Ratnam movie Agni Natchathiram, they team up again for the same director after a long gap.

10. A.R. Rahman’s chart-busters, Vairamuthu’s adorable lyrics, Santhosh Sivan’s marvellous camera work and to top of all, ‘The Mani Ratnam factor’. Well Raavanan is definitely one of the most-anticipated films of the year. So get ready for some action this Friday (June 18, 2010).

10 Reason why you must watch this movie.
by Sushagar Chells on Jun 21, 2010 04:55 PM  | Hide replies

1. For Mani Ratnam fans, this one is reason enough, but for you sceptics out there, here are nine more!

2. If you thought Iruvar, Roja and Bombay were Mani Ratnam’s best, Raavan/ Raavanan is going to stun you! Says who? Just about everybody who has worked for the project! “Mani Ratnam has made this film like a penance. Mani Ratnam, Vikram and Aishwarya Rai will definitely get National Awards,” said lyricist Vairamuthu.

3. Mani Ratnam’s Raavanan is also special for its huge star cast: Vikram, Aishwarya Rai, Prithviraj, Karthik, Prabhu, Priyamani, Munna, John Vijay in Tamil and Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai, Vikram, Govinda, Ravikissen, Priyamani, Nikhil Dwivedi in Hindi (Raavan).

4. Most parts of the movie were shot in deep interiors of dense forests. Our hero plays a tribal chief!

5. Shyam Kaushal has choreographed the thrilling climax fight. “The shooting for Raavan began in January 2009 in Kolkata, then Ooty, and the climax was shot on Malsej Ghat, where there’s a scene on bridges 2,000 feet above mountains. Mani loves challenges and likes challenging his actors and technicians too. His quest for perfection puts them through a grueling routine,” he said.

6. For the first time, Vikram simultaneously plays two diametrically different roles in two languages of the same film. Vikram play the role of Dev (Ram) in Hindi and Beera (Raavan) in Tamil.

7. Aishwarya plays the rol

After Aiyirathil Oruvan and ravana , I have decided that I will never see a movie that has taken more than 6 months for completion...

The story of the movie doesnot do anything with ramayana. This is a stupid revenge story we are seeing in a tamil cinema.Vikram is a rowdy kind of character and his sister is rapped by group of policemen. The men in charge to capture is Prithiviraj and his wife is aish. After vikram's sister commited sucide he wanted to took revenge against Pritihivi/Policmen.He kill all the policemen involved in the rape and kidnapp Aish to make prithivi feel for his wife and wanted to trap him in the forest.
THE STORY IS NOTHING NEW AND WAS SEEN IN SO MANY MOVIES.mANI pL sTOP ALL THIS NONSENSE AND TAKE GOOD MOVIES OF YOUR OLD TIME

With all due respect - shows your knowledge of Ramayana and Aaranya kaandam & Sundara kaandam in particular. Valmiki in Aaranya kaandam claims that if there was no kaikeyi and no Surpanakha there is no Ramayan. Given that ManiRatnam is concentrating on Raavan he's taken Surpanakha's case and the revenge that Raavan wanted to take against Ram and Lakshman for the defamation they brought against Surpanakha. Sita's captivity is described in Sundara kandam and Mani's take on it is simply brilliant. Ofcourse, its set in present day and its his version - so there are going to be differences but he does highlight the darker shades of Ram (killing Vaali & others) the good side of Raavan beautifully. BTW, who said Mani has never been criticized for some of the masala aspects he brings in? As a director he needs to make sure that the producer breaks even / makes money but at the same time give a quality product (which ppl. have acknowledged - look at his success rate). I loved Raavan - may be its not flawless but loved the way he's handled so many small details in Aaranya / Sundara kaandam.
