Kabir Khan
What do you expect from Abhishek?
by Kabir Khan on Jun 21, 2010 05:19 AM

If you are expecting a great movie from Abhishek, then I would feel sorry for you! Always expect a useless movie from him. As a lead actor Abhishek is worthless.

Why this Raja Sen hatred
by Deepti on Jun 21, 2010 04:34 AM

Its really funny and stupid how we start bashing Raja Sen the moment he reviews a film. Raavan is indeed a really boring movie and bashing Sen without even watching the movie puts us too the same category in which we try to place him - " BIASED"

....on the epic Ramayana. Why can't he make
original films?!

I prefer both KB and Bharathiraja any day over him.

Never writes dialogues for his movies. I'm sure everyone misses Sujatha. Man the dialogues of Raavanan were awful. How could he make Suhasini handle dialogues? Sh!t !

MR can never be put in the league of great Indian filmmakers like Satyajit Ray, Gulzar, Bimal Roy, Shyam Benegal etc

When you leave the cinema hall you just forget it - the worst role goes to Govina whose character is so annoying - he looks like a bufoon and a clown-why did he even accept this role ? As for Aishwarya she is beautiful on screen and still a talented actress but wasted in the movie - her role is supposed to be a dance teacher and there is one classical dance which is just about average and the song has no dum in it. The best part of the movie is one song and dance( Thok Di Killi) filmed on Abhisek and others in which he excels - Abhisek should stop trying to be a Amitabh - not every one can scale the heights of Amitabh - he does have a few good dialogues but there is something lacking and the whole blame should go to the director and the flawed script - the movie\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s plot is so weak - it is pathetic - now
Abhisek should get to doing what he does best and that is to act in movies like Dostana sequel and Dhoom 3. Guru was a really good movie but Raavan should go into dustbin.
Music and cinematography do excel in the movie.

Why Mani Ratnam is overrated?
by planetx on Jun 21, 2010 02:46 AM  | Hide replies

Mani Ratnam is easily the most overrated director. I really don't understand how his movies are any different from the regular Masala flicks. The only difference is the cinematography is remarkable.

Right from his debut pagal Nilavu to Raavanan there has always been unwanted elements included.

The separate comedy track in both Pagal Nilavu and Agni Natchathiram was just for commercial reasons. It was plain nasty!

He never had the guts to make a song-less film. Most of his films had item numbers with actresses in skimpy clothes again just for commercial reasons. Pani Vizhum Iravu in Mouna Ragam, September Madham in Alaipayuthey, Nila adhu vanathu mele in Nayakan, Arabic Kadaloram in Bombay etc are some examples that come to mind. The songs were totally unnecessary. I don't know why he never gets criticized for it.

His last decent film was indeed Kannathil Muthamittal. After KM he is not working with actors who would be apt for the roles. He rather now wants to work only with bankable stars. If not how could a director of his
caliber would even consider actresses with zero acting talent like Trisha and Ash.

So how exactly he is different from the masala filmmakers? Please enlighten me. His films also have the same standard fights, songs and
comedy.

His creativity is also questionable. Everyone knows Karnan was based on Mahabharatha. Iruvar was based on MGR - karunanidhi relationship. (I dunno why the film is hailed as a masterpiece. Utter crap!) Now Raavanan/Raavan base

Re: Why Mani Ratnam is overrated?

You are right, he is no way near Bhartiraja or Balachander. His film "roja" catapulated him to fame. He has no respect for his heroines, where he makes them elope from house. Be it "bombay' or "guru' or "Mouna Raagam' etc. Yes, his film Kannathil Muthamittal had a story line and Nayakan where of a different league. Finally, you feel that you are viewing his films in the dark and his dialogues are completely monosylabbic. Talent irrespective of where it comes needs to be hailed but Mani Ratnam does not deserves the praise for his mediocrity.

Mr/Ms Planetx, I read your comments and laughed for about 2 mins. I can say with ease that the movies mani ratnam makes are not for people like you who live for 1 rain song, 4 fight scenes, mother sentiment, sister sentiment, one dimensional characters filled movies which flood the hindi, tamil, telugu movie industry..You will never understand the creative talents, the scene visualization, the story telling aspect, the picturization, the content mapping with script in phenomenal movies like mouna ragam, roja, anjali, gitanjali, bombay etc because it requires a certain sense of aesthetics to absorb, assimilate and appreciate quality movies. To make a movie without songs is by who's criteria a great movie??? Au contraire, Mani ratnam's movies have great songs that augment his story telling. if you think the songs in the movies are unnecessary then i believe you should not watch any movies since even any standard set bollywood/hollywood/mollywood/tollywood has a sound track behind it. If you think mani ratnam's creativity is questinable then i seriously think you do not have complete control over your mental faculties, only a genius can make a movie like Iruvar..one of the finest movies made in India..so what if its after a real MGR-MK relationship? Every scene in that wondrous movie leapt with creative juices that someone fed on a diet of meaningless shahrukh khan chick flicks and other anal retentive tripe can never understand. You dont need to be a genius to recognize one.

How exactly do you know I enjoy such movies? FYI, I'm just saying MR is no different from the other masala filmmakers. I have no problem with his songs in movies. But September Madham are kept purely for commercial reasons. Was it realistic? Can you see a woman dancing like that in Indian beaches? Why doesn't anyone criticize him for it?

Let us agree to disagree abt Iruvar. I'm still glad it was a flop. TN audience definitely have a good taste.

Yes Mani Ratnam is an overrated director. He is not a good story teller, he gets some good technicians and his films mainly rely on good music and cinematography. More style and little substance.

Common people Mani Ratnam is the best director and you have to appreciate his direction skilla... but you talk about story, dialogues etc... in tamil there is a proverb "adipatta marrathukku kalladi" the one who is getting flopped is the one who is getting beaten... please touch your heart and tell if he is an useless director... I cant see anybody making a movie like anjali

If Mani is the best we have, we are doomed. I am at a loss to see how so many people get sucked in by the hype about Mani & Rahman!! Don't they have a sense of their own??

Mani is just another commercial who makes movies with all the commercial ingredients. His biggest strength is his technical team, esp his cinematographers - Madhu Ambat, P C Sreeram, Santosh Sivan etc and music - Ilayaraja. Without them his movies would've been as good as David Dhavan's or any other mediocre ones. At least now people have started to see that he is all hype & not much on talent! Thank goodness for that!!

I won't rate Raavanan as even one of Vikram's
best. He was excellent in Pithamagan. But here all he does is hamming. The person who needs to be blamed is Mani! Ash's cleavage show was seriously disgusting. Reminds Manisha in Uyire Uyire song in Bombay. The way she was made to run! Don't know why he exploits his heroines.
