Doesn't matter where we live, but Indians in general should improve our basic etiquette. Till then we will be called slum dogs.
1. Bathe everyday, if possible more than once a day, we have a tendency to sweat a lot. 2. Do not pass gas or burp in public 3. If you have not washed your hair, do not apply oil! It smells worse 4. Do not have bollywood sangeet as loud ringtones 5. Do not forget to buy deodrants, gift everyone in your family a good deodrant! 6. Have haircuts regularly 7. Go to dentists regularly, and use a mouth freshner daily 8. change socks everyday, feet smells worse than mouth 9. Do not talk loud on your cellphones in a public place 10. Do not break the order when in a queue 11. If your kids are naughty and loud it is not adorable to everyone around, do not smile & laugh and look for others approval instead teach your kids public manners from childhood 12.stop picking nose in public...it is the dirtiest habit of most Indians 13.do not blow your nose in public 13.Do not spit on the roads 14.Do not ask personal questions and get curious about others lives

you know...every country has its own problems. After listening to interviews and discussions on NPR, it is apparent that Slumdog refers to an "underdog" from slum who rose to be a millionaire.
A lot of ppl in this forum and otherwise seem to misinterpret the whole idea behind the movie.
When i first started watching the movie..i was like "WTH" and then as movie passed on it became more apparent as to what was going on.
Unfortunately, we have better movies in bollywood that never get any reconition, neither in bollywood nor outside.
I am more embarrased with movies that have song sequences in Europe, in teh middle of a movie, with no relation to what is going on.

And above all, stop remarking ad infinitum that 'corruption exists in all countries'; actually that is poor reason why it should exist a hundred fold in India !!!

ITS SO AMAZING THAT WE AS INDIANS AND AS A NATION, DO NOT WANT TO START FOLLOW THE RULES A CITIZEN SHOULD FOLLOW. WE AS A COUNTRY WITH ITS HIGHLY HYPED AND SELF-CREATED ESTEEMED PRIDE, DO NOT WANT TO FOLLOW A SINGLE THING, WHICH WILL MAKE THE THINGS BETTER OF THOSE WHO LIVE WITH US AND AROUND US.
WE ONLY WANT TO BLAME BLINDLY, LEFT AND RIGHT TO ALL THOSE, WHO REMIND US THAT WE ARE FAR BEHIND IN ETIQQUES TO THE DEVELOPED NATION AND AS HONEST AND SENSIBLE CITIZENS. WE AS PROUD INDIANS LIVE IN HELL AND MAKE EVERYTHING AROUND US SHAMEFULLY AND WITHOUT AN IOTA OD SENSIBILITY, A WORST PLAC TO LIVE.
ITS NOT ABOUT INDIA,A COUNTRY, IT IS STILL GREAT. ITS ABOUT THE PEOPLE WHO MAKE IT WORST DAY BY DAY.
I AGREE WITH THE MESSENGER. WE SHOULD LOOK INSIDE AND WILL REALIZE, WE CAN MAKE A CHANGE, BUT THEN WE ARE LAST TO ACT BUT FIRST TO CRITICIZE EVERYTHING ELSE AROUND US.

not necessarily be true. I live here in the US. as far as Ive seen and heard, most people who go to office wont take bath daily in the morning. they do that in the nights. they do so to cope up with their fast paced lifestyle. am not talking about Indians in the US. Favored or unfavored by the climate, scents and perfumes help them a lot. Dental care is something not affordable by an average American, not all get their dental problems fixed. Its the presentation that differs. Others sounds acceptable like breaking the queue. We lack that sense of social responsibility which they respect a lot. Children, elders, women first. Pedestrians are respected. Traffic obedience is awesome. Public mannerisms are good. Its not a problem for us too. We are just a generation behind for such a society. Soon we will be sought after for our qualities.

British have cleverly picked up the divisive factors of Indians and adopted divide and rule policy. Thus they are responsible for partition of India and creation of homeless mass which led to formation of slums. They have taken the advantage of Indian benevolence to crookedly overpower her to squeeze out her last drop of wealth and now showcasing her poverty to every nook and corner of the world. Only British can do it because they have it in their gene/blood.

1) Movie deserving oscar ?
May be but India produces far more better movies than this.
2) Original Score is best then any other movies of Dileep Kumar ( A R Rahman) because normally in Bollywood he gives music for songs not for background music matching with scenes and situation of movie (which is called background score).
3) The name is derived from the term "underdog" and the guy who is an underdog from a slum can be regarded as slumdog..
4) Laughin or crying doesn't matter!
Whole world will realize sooner or later the potential and caliber of Indians Someday!!!

Any educated can undersatnd slumdog derived from term underdog ... but if you making movie on Indians then atleast title shud match with Indian mentality,,, definitley here title "slumdog" carved something diff in mind.

Have you seen the movie yet "Smash" ?
I bet you didn't !
You are simply taking AB's word.
The movie is not about real India lies in slums or anything like that rather the movie is about improbable, it makes one curious that how a guy from slum answers all the question of a toughest quiz show whose most of the answers are not known by common educated person!
It's not about the lives of slums or about poor India.
Every country has poor people and areas where extreme poverty prevails even in USA many cities have extremely poor people living roadside or at dingy places.
If the director had chosen those people from USA's shitest places nobody created a furore not even AB.
Because this movie is about impossible becoming possible.
Once again I would like to repeat Raja Sen's wording "The Best Director can turn shits into Dreams" and Danny Boyle had really done that !!
Go watch the movie and then decide whether the intention of the director was to show the real India or showing India as a shit place or AB want cheap publicity simply because he rejected this movie initially and now criticizing himself for this !

i saw the movie couple weeks back,, infact i found/downloaded this movie long back (around 3-4 weeks), but didn't found that intresting, and saw it again after so much hype, AND i live in US. faroog ghan now can you re-write ur comment.
The plot of the film is a deciding factor for getting international awards; particularly if those films are based on oriental themes.
If the plot is based on India it has to have surely poverty, and religious feud!
If it is Iranian it should have how the Mullahs are tramping the Iranian society and how a young man or a girl fights and wins it!
Film makers know this prejudice; and they actually play the ball like Mira Nair creating SALAAM BOMBAY & FIRE, Satyajit Rays PATHER PAANCHALI (in fact its sequel APARAJITO has better merit) and now this blokes SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE!
I heard the song of AR Rehman that got the best Golden Globe award; it is average; Rehman in fact produced much better in the past but none of them have got any international awards!
For the West who are investing in India like Warner Bros etc., now it is time to project Indian cinema with awards so that their investments get good returns.
Politically also it is a kind of taking the monkey off your back if you award a Muslim from sub-continent and it projects the West that they are not actually anti-muslim.
It is a way of repaying India as India is becoming more influential!
Yet they ensure that only those movies though they are based on Indian themes, which are produced and directed by the Westerners get these awards. Even Gandhi the film is such one. The film making of Gandhi is nothing great about. It is the plot and subject matter that won the award. Yet they ensured Kingley got it

Agreed that AR has produced really good music. With that music on his resume he has received really good international assignments and in turn, is getting a nod for an Oscar. So, the music in this movie should not be considered in isolation.
Oscars race is decided on the films released in a particular year. Had Slumdog been competing with Ben Hur, Forrest Gump (another story of rags to riches for underdog), Gandhi it would have been just happy to be nominated. Universal themes of Hope, triumph of the underdog are something that the juries anywhere can easily relate to. Gandhi was about hope and triumph of underdogs, so was Lagaan and definitely Slumdog. I have to completely disagree with anyone who says that there is nothing great about any of these movies. Some movies have individual merits.. very few have everything gelling together- story, ensamble acting, direction, music, and making the whole more than sum of the parts.
Indians should make movies for Indian audiences. It is their market. If they try to make a movie with Oscars on their mind first of all, the movie will be unlikely to be entered since, the process that decides entry from India is totally screwed up (e.g. Jeans, Indian, Hey Ram, Guru (old), Devdas, Paheli, Rang De Basanti, etc).
In the end, I must disagree that the West is won over only by depiction of poverty in India. You need to read reviews for Monsoon Wedding, a story of indian upper middle class, on rottentomatoes.com. It was a class act.
Saw the movie. India portrayed like this really poor country and stuff? Its a typical love story, but with good music from Rahman. Just because its a British director, we are going to the Oscars? WTF?
Nominations: 1)Best Film 2)Best Adapted Screenplay 3)Best Director (Danny Boyle) 4)Best Original Score (A R Rahman) 5)Best Song (Jai Ho and O Saya) 6)Best Sound Editing (Tom Sayers) 7)Best Sound Mixing (Ian Tapp, Richard Pryke and Resul Pookutty) 8)Best Cinematography (Anthony Dod Mantle) 9)Best Film Editing (Chris Dickens).

Re: Re: Re: Re: what is the 10th nomination??
by vrajesh patel on Jan 23, 2009 12:00 AM
i just checked out the category and there r total of 3 songs contesting...2 from slumdog millionaire and 1 from Wall-e...so its gonna be atleast 1 oscar for Slumdog
Indian or india-based Movies (slumdog is not a india movie) at the oscar level gets appreciation only when the poverty angle is highlighted on. e.g. Satyajit Ray's "Apur Sansar" and now Slumdog (which I have seen and is good but a overdose in certain scenes is certainly there)-small jamal need not have coated with human excreta when he collects the autograph of Big B-EVEN lAGAN is set in a rural village. Movies like Life in a Metro, Honeymoon Travels, Rock On, Maine Gandhi ko nahin mara, and of course Shau..(Rahul Bose/K.K.Menon) never come to the limelight. Wonder why!

Oscar winning movies are usually war movies, poverty movies, drug movies, holocaust movies, adultery movies and some dull dark movies
Slumdog may win oscars only for song, cinematography and such things not for best picture
