by Rash b on Feb 21, 2009 09:54 PM

All those who are shouting at west for enjoying a slum india movie, go get a life. Why are you so irritated tht a foreigner tuk a move abt slums in india? what have you done to a poor man ever in your life?? one guy opened the world to india. now its indians responsibility to eradicate poverty and slums in india.. now take your chance and show west tht from today india will nt hve slums. Can you do that??? think positiv of what can be done to erase slums rather than sitting at ur A/c rooms and complaining on some guy who is a professional who tuk a movie and gave india a little fame! you narrow minded loosers! if sombdy else had taken an oscar winning movie on uganda slums in africa , wouldnt you go and see it in a A/c theatre wasting your money?? huh! get a life

India- In the hands of Realtors
by historyrepeats on Feb 21, 2009 03:34 PM  | Hide replies

Over 70% of Indians don't have their own house and therefore they pay 40-50 % of their income in payment rent or EMI.
How can one think of economy revival without providing affordable house of millions of Indians.
Real Culprit - Builders, Banks and Politicians nexus in artificially jacking up Property prices and therefore depriving a large chunk of Indian population with their basic need i.e House.

People have virtually stopped investing money in property and first time house buyers are postponing their plan to purchase flat/bunglow.
Change is the only constant in life.

i hate this hype about oscar awards. why should we be so obsessed about the need for western appreciation for our films which are great to us. please do not forget that the films are a reflection of our society to a small extent only and the western nations like to always see us as the underdogs even though in reality it is not so very true. true we have problems but who does not have? for a nation which has had independence only for a period of sixty years after foreign rule of 800 years, we have progressed. but not to the extent maximum possible. and that we have only ourselves to blame. and it would be sad if every director starts making films keeping the oscars or the other international awards in mind . that would kill the indian spirit of our movies.

But I think slumdog is out to conquer not to prove, as the author thinks :-)
India has stuff that others value - not cheap labour - Americans now know that their luxurious lifestyle was actually just a prolonged, elaborate set - a national Truman show - and when the chance was given to the people who ran the show, they looted and pillaged without end. Some say this started with the Reagan era - all that I do not know - what I do know is that today's America knows that their lifestyle was a bubble and it has burst. India has the answers to all their big questions. They gave so much power to companies and politicians (who built and ran an elaborate film set) that those two together robbed away culture from mainstream society. Hence the rise of countercultures, cults, and what not. Corp Politics did not spare Jesus Christ either. He must be crying at what Bush went around telling the believers - what Bush actually preached meant that Jesus is a despot, who orders things around - not the subtle skillful engineer and playwright who plays a cosmic game with extremely dense interconnected stories and events.
Then there is Sept 11. "Loose change" is all I will say.
Many in the US realise that inspite of not knowing English, the average Indian is born with a set of social traits and society has many systems to maintain our culture intact and accumulate their modifications. They're realising this.
Slumdog is the key to the *cultural treasure* called India. Next is Africa.

Dear Mr.Nayak,

First and foremost please let me correct you, all which is west is not America(n) and all that is

america(n) is not a representative of the west.

Danny Boyle is a British director and the movie is made under the banner of "Film Four" (later fox

searchlights took under its wings, more like a takeover of a startup company). He also made movies

like "Train Spotting", a brilliant movie indeed.

In Train Spotting, the director addresses the social issues of life in council estates (if not

slums, anything closer to slums the UK has to offer) of scotland and to a large extent in the UK.

The movie potrays drug abuse, thuggery, breakdown of family values etc.,

Now I wouldn't go as far as calling you a blind, coz you seem to be a gentleman. But lets not be

defensive and start comparing with America and remind what went wrong in America or the west. There

can be no bench mark for social values. The only bench mark is humanity.

Slumdog, tries to address the issues faced by the underdogs (Pls read: poor) of Mumbai (rest of

India), whilst the rest of the India is in a hurry gathering pace to reach the unknown destination.

India is a very big nation with its super rich, rich, politicians, Babus, the great middle class,

etc., Unfortunately, the nation is so big that we tend to forget that there is a very big class

which usually go unnoticed till movies like slumdog and others remind us of their existence.

Lets calculate the strength of this under

** Continuation from previous post **

Lets calculate the strength of this underdogs. The general consensus is that there are 300 million

middle class, now there can't be more than 300 million rich/super rich/others (I know its a overly

optimist number) can they? Now if we subtract this 600 million from 1.1 billion that leaves us with

a figure of 500 million underdogs :-(

TO be honest in the day-to-day life the media, the bollywood, the politicians (unless its election

time), the government, and the mainstream India never remember these poor underdogs. Neither do I or

other Indians like you. We don't have time for these slumdogs. They are the eye-soars of India.

Aren't they?

Instead of being defensive, lets do one thing today. Lets each one of us adopt a slumdog brother and

share our riches/happiness with their poverty/shabbiness. Hows that for a change?

PS: I didn't intend to offend you Mr.Nayak or anyone. Reality is bitter and slumdogs are eye-soars.

When you have an eye-soar you take medicine to cure it. We need a medicine to address the realities.

- SS.

Politicians -Open your eyes
by shashi pai on Feb 21, 2009 02:32 PM  | Hide replies

Slumdog movie has given an opportunity to all political leaders/ corporators/ ministers especially from Mumbai to CLEAN up Mumbai.
Today crowds are flowing to Mumbai like cats and dogs from all states of India.
500 families come to Mumbai everyday, especially from North states.
The Govt needs to put some kind of restriction from allowing this flow. They are all from poor families from North who come and reside in Mumbai creating new Slum areas.
All our other states need to create job opportunities in their respective states and stop this flow to Mumbai.
Also many illegal Bangladeshis stay in Mumbai in these Slums. Strict action needs to be taken and send them back to B.G.
Enough of the Mess created in Mumbai.
JAGO INDIA JAGO !

slumdog millionaire
by raghavendra rao on Feb 21, 2009 02:24 PM

this is a movie made by a westerner using indian material. and that is the reason the westerners have liked it so much acccording to their point of view. i am sure the same story directed by an indian wouldnt have appealed to them, and not a single nomination in their awards. basically all their awards are for films which appeal to their senses. so even though it might not be a great movie in the "indian " taste , it has created a hype basically because we indians feel proud when a foreigner (read as whites) appreciates anything indian. this only reflects the low level of confidence we have in ourselves and the constant urge to be praised by the western media and their approval. vice versa the english media loves talking about poverty porn.

Bollywood needs to change
by Chirkut on Feb 21, 2009 11:29 AM  | Hide replies

So far it is full of fantacies and idealities which do not exist in real world. This is why our most of the films have a long list of songs, little low-lev comedy and a lot of weeping and tragedy. Such type of films may win audience in Indian cinema halls but have no value at the world level.

I think this scene may change a little by 'Slumdog millionaire' and few film makers may accept it a a challenge to make purposeful films showing realities and of course solutions to real world problems.

and only if they could act, that might help along with taking the songs out. Put the songs in the back ground but please don't dance to the tune. They will never work to an outside audience. and again only if the bollywood actors (all of them) could act at par with hollywood.
