i agree with most people here...the movie is way over the top...yeh some content might have truth behind...but they have gone way over board....if a film shows india in good light and true things that have been happening in India....westerns reject it outright....they only interested in negative stuff that come from the developing countries not the positive stuff!! such Hippocrates!!

It is good for western audience but as a indian i felt very sad by seeing that. Slumdog is like slum ke kutthe no one wants to call someone a dog.
Very soon they will realise they will be in slums too with all the foreclosures and lay offs and high medical costs they will be homeless and on welfare. That is like living in slums with the difference they can cash welfare checks from GOVT.
Here we go again.. Please stop sucking up.. Why do Indians crave for attention/approval/endorsement from the West? Why do Indians always try to please the West? After all India is a 5000 yr old civilization.. it has to count for something..Taare Zameen Par is a far superior film..And Illayaraja has never been recognized by the stupid oscars despite his brilliant contributions over decades..not to take away anything from Rahman, but what i am saying is the oscars/golden globes/blah blah blah are just a biased Western View point and has nothing to do with Indian Arts contribution to the world..
Guys.. I also live in US and I think the movie aint' so great to be nominated for Oscars. Instead of Boyle had this been made by any Indian director ..it would not have even reached doorsteps of western world..
You need to have right connections / credentials ..which Boyle has..so the film is nominated at Oscars.
Pretty ordinary movie and ordinary music score too.. Again Boyle credentials are working for ARR.. same with Frieda..
Satyajit Ray had fancy for portraying poverty in his films..
Ivory merchant / Ruth Jhabwala made better movies with Indian background..
Somewhere in media.. it was commented (during review of this film) that 65% of Indian population lives in slums !!! Really ????
Mr Boyle are you listening.. coz you have more chances to get more oscars by making more slumdog, slumcats, slumpigs, slumdonkeys Billionaires..

I agree with J. Westerners are google-eyed over India's poverty. Read the 2008 Booker prize 'White Tiger' by Aravid Adiga. The english in the book is atrocious, yet it won because it paints a dark, dirty picture of the underclass in India, most of it a hyperbole. Right on down from the British, this has been going on... the so-called "white man's burden" in which the wretched souls of their colonies had to be civilised by them. Please get over this complex.

All because the western world has forggoton what is a slum(well in the west they are called ghettos). It is some thing special something out of this world. for us it is harsh reality a reality we live with every day it is a daily grind for us. Compared to the west it is noting special but just daily life nothing else. for us it is not a surprise. It doe's not leave us breathless.
I think except for the imagery of human spirit set in the backdrop of filthy poverty, this film is not up to the mark of say TZP,RDB or lagaan.Anil kapoors character could never be indian, atleast not in public telivision,he would be thrown out if he treats a poor guy like that. The dialogues of the kids are pathetic-- "the guy with the colt 45 says so"--hughh ramsays have better dialogue than that.Cinematic mistakes--"Why the feaces scene, if he knows amitabh before? now its known that one of the answers were wrong too. The film is nothing but deewar reworked for americans. But deewar was far better. No wonder in india nobody went to watch it in theaters. India with poverty and exotism appeals to west, we would prefer SRK romancing kajol anyday instead. Who cares abt what the west want anyway

Is it not irritating to see 100 film old anil acting as if he has done something great with this guest appearence of his?????
Frieda pinto or whoever wants to be in newyork to think...hughhh...she wants to be pinolope cruz or something like that. I do know that with her look she would not even become a bindu in hindi film industry..

Yes Blue Wrox, you are right. It reminds me Sachin's(film actor) answer on one of the interviews that he had not given any hits afetr Geet Gaata Chal. Sachin said " my recent two films 'Trishul' and 'Sholay' were bigger hits than Geet Gaata Chal.
Heelo Aseem, I am an Indian living in USA, and my connection to Bollywood is through rediff. From the time Slumdog was released in USA and India I came across many postings about the movie, how it has projected India to the Western nations, the movie title is derogatory to the slum community and so on. This is the first time I have read an article which seems captured the true message the movie delivers. I liked it. Yes, we Indians are a true example to the World that anything is possible if you want to make a change in your life. Slumdog is a feel good movie in this tough economic times. To my fellow Indians at home you will not believe how famous Anil Kapoor, Frieda Pinto and Dev patel has become post Oscar nominations. They were everywhere on TV, attending shows like Regis and Kelly, Good Morning America. Hats off to you Danny Boyle for capturing the essence we Indians have, and our struggle to make ends meet no matter how difficult times will be. My best wishes to AR Rehman for his Oscar nominations and I am quite sure he will bring Oscar to home. Sohoni Das

Some of my American colleagues have seen the movie they liked it since they believe that most of the Indians live in Slums around cities.
Just a different opinion. I am waiting for a British movie that is made on dangerous black neighborhoods in US.. that gets an Oscar

Thanks Sohoni
I live in New York where this movie is still playing to packed audiences and house full theaters any day of the week. I was told the first time about this movie by my American colleagues who had come back pleasantly surprised and wanted me to go see it as well..
