100% agree with you Mr.Jaffer.
Raja's composition is not just music but medicine. If any one feel stress just listen to the Classical Melodies of Raja Sir and I bet the mind gets destressed and feel light.Be it a Diwali or Holi, Ramzan or Christmas, Birthday or Wedding for every occassion there is always a Raja Sir's song. I daily thank god for blessing me into this earth during the great era of Illaiyaraja Sir.

this is for all who think ARR to be Brahmin and promoted him! He converted himself to muslim just because he was born as an SC and to hide the fact. Only because of that he was promoted by Manirathnam and balachander - otherwise he will be nothing in front of Illaiyaraja! IR is the great musician of all time and one can check any world. Todays world favourite M-I-A and Black Eyed Peas have songs inspired from Ilayaraja's creations and ARR himself couldn't do much in the other world. Better he learn he can't bake Pizza better than Italians. Hail Raja the best of all years and all worlds!

Hey don't fight!

Reading the replies to the above review, I feel that while we all love music, many of us are passionate about music, many like me do not have a formal training in music. Who are we to judge? We can say only whether we like this, or we like that, but we cannot "judge". Debating on who's the best at present, or for all times, I feel is futile here. When it comes to film music, you cannot expect a Jaane Tu to be repeated every time. As a fan of music, I have enjoyed songs of Ilyaraja, Rahman, O.P.Nayyar, Naushad ... the list can be endless.

I would rather end up saying that the songs of Yuvvraaj(curious spelling, though) do have repeat value.

yuvraaj-so..so.
by karthikrao on Oct 23, 2008 05:48 PM

yuvraaj in entirety is not a patch on taal or rehmaans earlier works this year-jaane tu ..and jodha akbar. the orchestral arrangements are grand and so are the visuals on the display card.alka yagnik sounds so fresh in tu muskuraa, vijay prakashs man mohinia is vibrant and srinivas rendered zindagi is alluring. the fast past no.s are quite bland. and of course the tu hi to meri dost hai is easily one of the most catchy soothing love songs of the season. rehamns music will need great on screen help to make a mark.

NIMZ... ARR is defenitely not the greatest ever composer, maybe as a music techie he w'd rank the best
by RK on Oct 22, 2008 09:57 PM  | Hide replies

there are much better composers in india than naushad, sd burman and rahman..
rehmans stands no where whn compared to illayaraja. IRs music was simple gloriously melodious wit an apt use of musical instruments and moreover his music was natural rather than the heavy mixing done by arr.
whn u look at classic composers, ms vishwanathan was way ahead of sd burman or naushad. but mine and so w'd most mallu guys wit a classiacl taste would say that raveendran was peerless. his compostions had melodies, classicals both hindustani and carnatic, folklore everything. and the most imp part is that even if his songs were so simple to listen to, the singers shd be of execptional quality to sing his songs.
nowdays in malayalam channels there are lots of reality shows for best singers, very few ppl try to take up a raveendran song and even if they do, they w'd fall drastically short of an average performance. that sums up the gr8 man.

if ur a true music lover,
watch this song and see the use of interludes. maybe u'll appreciate..
youtube.com/watch?v=NuAYuNazaFY

cheers guys.
this post is not to create a divide or hatred. but just to let ppl know that there are even better composers who are not highlighted by the media.

hey RK...

I believe ones taste of music largely depends on exposure, Empirically or relatively.
Before I address the point, I did check ur IR track - Even though I didnt get a word - It sounded fantastic! Whos the singer? Would love to hear Ravendran and Vishwanathan too, If u cud suggest some of their best songs...

Now, I chose Naushad, SDB and ARR based on WHAT I've heard. In fact I was a huge fan of R.D Burman too, Before I started listening to western classical and realized many of his songs have been shamelessly 'inspired'. A German wud tell u Richard Strauss is the greatest composer ever, An Italian wud say Rossini, An Austraian wud say Schubert, An American wud say Braxton, Another German might say Beethoven! Point is :- I've no right to comment on composers u spoke abt cause, Simply, I havent heard them!....Meanwhile, If u dont listen to Hindi music I'd suggest Burman's Kagaaz Ke Phool, Guide...Naushad's BaijuBawra, Mughal-E-Azam...Rahman's Roja, Taal and of course Dil se - arguably the finest hindi movie soundtrack ever.

Finally, Like all forms of Art - Music is an extremely subjective matter. I know guys who feel Rafi was over-rated and I know people who cud attain enlightment listening to Himesh (trust me, I do!)...And I guess we gotta respect that cause one likes what one likes, Nobody has the right to look-down upon others sayin "My taste is better than urs"

Also, this being a Music based discussion - Nice to see relatively non-venomous posts for a change!

thanks for the reply bro.

first all the youtube link i posted was not an IR track, it was raveendrans. the singer is yesudas and for more tracks u just need to search on youtube giving keywords yesudas and raveendran, same can be done for compositions by ms vishwanathan and IR. yesudas was the main singer down south and most of the music directors hav their best songs rendered by yesudas. yesudas for my money is the best singer indias ever produced. he can sing carnatic, hindustani, melodies and fast numbers exceptionally. maybe u just need to listen to the song sunaiyna in hindi. his pronounciation is bad but that doesnt take the gloss of the song.

ssince ur a naushad dan, u pls try listening to a malayalam movie composition by naushad called as dwani and check out the song manasanilayil rendered by yesudas.
im a music lover, not really into western music and ive listened to SDB, RDB, Naushad, Salil Chaudary, Ravi Bombay and lots more.
as far as Ar rehmans best music goes, i think u shd listen to IRUVAR, Sangamam, Pushiya Mugham all in tamil

music is subjective, but the point is that what a common man likes can just be something ordinary for a person wit more musical sense. and for me ARR is a man wit immense talent, but too drawn into commercial line of music. and only time can say if im right or wrong.

for me music is timeless and guys like raveendran, IR and all hav proved that their hits are timeless. rahman still needs to prove it. as far as the contempories go,

the tamil movie is Pudhiya Mugham(spell check).

im not saying that my taste is better than anyones, but its just a comparison like class and mass.

the media here hypes all nonsensical stuff and film like TZP gets so much accalaim that it goes for oscar whereas much better movies are discarded coz of the crap fed into the heads of public by the media.

the above was just an example of my opinion.

so what ppl like us can do w'd be to communicate and move away from the mainstream trash and explore our avenues into the ocean thats music.

feel free to buzz me on my yahoo messenger. my id is gooner_ash

we c'd exchange some tracks.

thanks bro. once again

mate,Rehmans music is aslo timeless.May be the lyrics r nt tht gr8,but the tunes can hav goose bumps even after 10 yrs of its composition. His compositions always sounds fresh, even if u hear them for more than 50 times, still u find something new which moves u,there is definately some magic in his tunes. The instumental frm bombay is a masterpiece,it has god tremoundous soothing effect.I dont know much abt south indian music, may be illayaraja is the greatest. But for me a.r. rehman is the god of music, i feel blessed 2 hav such a genius in our country, who hav indian music popular throughout.

I can write better review
by girish gupta on Oct 22, 2008 05:05 PM

i can write better review. it has been written by english graduate with no taste of music. it think sukanya is too afraid too air her thought. she just says each song is equally good and a masterpiece which is not true. A reviewer must be critical in presenting if she says good to everything then a laymen and banal person can do as well. everubody know rehman creates good music and we know that we don't need you to tell that to us. all we need is bring in your perspective rather than being monotonous about everything.
