Michael With Cycle,

Thilakan is a world class actor whose main work is in Malayalam Cinema. Malayalam is a national language of India spoken by about 30 million people (roughly the population of Canada). The state of Kerala is situated at the southernmost part of India. With a very high literacy rate (96 %) people of Kerala can read/ understand, and enjoy good literature and cinema, among other forms of art. If Thilakan is considered a good actor in Keral, he must definitelty be one of the best in India, and in the world.

Probably you are that kind of person who enjoys SRK/ Amitabh movies and think them very good. A fan of old Dennis Wheatley would say he likes Wheatley better than Umberto Eco..

And, who is Umberto Eco?

Mr. Michael, with due respect for your opininon which you have blatantly posted on this website, i would like to inform you that Mr. Thilakan is undoubtedly one of the best actors which indian Cinema as ever produced. The fact of the matter is that there are a handful of such actors from Malayalam Cinema who are just amazingly brilliant but have been denied their true credit just because they come from a small state like kerala. for that matter even Mohanlal has not been given his dues who not only according to me but thousands of other malayalees would concur to the fact that he's the best actor that india has ever produced. Even Mr. Amitabh Bachchan endorses a similar view. The problem with general public in india is that they like stars like Shahrukh and Hrithik who basically are only "stars". Whereas people like Mohanla, Mammotty , Thilakan have carved a niche for themselves only on the basis of their acting capabilities. Unfortunately the still remain in the oblivion for the many millions across India. But that is what makes them the pride of Keralites and our best kept secret just like a treasure vault which still remains to be unearthed. By Ashish Murali

National award for Agneepath - 1990
Big B was Allahabad MP from 1984-87 and then left politics for good.

Why would any congress man vouch for him when he left politics 3 years before for good.

Some baseless argument!

It could be like this: india was recieving threats from the aliens in mars, and according to bachan's horoscopes, he was the the only person to stop alien invasion.
By the way the alien invasion was ordered by hrithik roshan and jadoo to destroy congress.

So congress was wooing him to win the national award, so along w/bachan they could destroy hrithik, jadoo and company.

Thilakan is like
by Ajaya Mohan on Jan 26, 2008 05:33 AM  | Hide replies

Thilakan is a great actor and a feast to watch in some of the roles which suit him. But unfortunately, he is mentally sick, like Australian cricketer Symonds. Although Symonds is a very good cricketer, for some reason he feels that he is racially abused all the time. Same is the case with Thilakan, he feels that he is sidelined in the name of caste. Malayalam movies has got a good number of actors from all castes. None of them, so far, has alleged that they are sidelined on the basis of caste. There are many directors trying out different formulas with newcomers. The point is most mallu directors are people with individuality. It is hard to believe that just because of pressure from some quarters, they will not cast Thilakan for a role which suits him. Malayalam do have the habit of keeping the stars for a long time (Eg: Prem Nazir). Although, Mohanlal and Mammootty are continuing for a long time, many others became stars in this time (like Suresh Gopi, Mukesh, Jayaram, Dileep, Prithviraj).
The truth is that, although Tilakan is a very good actor (excels in certain roles), he have limitation in acting all types of roles. The same point he alleges about Mammooty and Mohanlal regarding the choice of roles is applicable for him too. For eg: Nedumudi is a much more versatile actor, when different types of characters are concerned. Shouting whatever that comes in mouth publicly shows his character. In any field, good behaviour and getting along with others is important.

Ajaya Mohan,
You are naive if you think that there are no internal politics going on within the film industry. Why do you think there have been only 2 superstars for the past 20 -30 yrs??
Suresh Gopi, Mukesh, Jayaram, Dileep, Prithviraj are just that, stars...
You say that Thilakan is mentally sick because he has spoken out about something he feels strongly. Will you say the same thing about Dileep too? If I remember correctly, Dileep once said that Mohanlal was trying to curtail his career. After the huge success of his film Meeshamadhavan, Dileep was then touted as the next superstar. There was even a movie where both of them were to star together, but Mohanlal pulled out at the last minute, giving no reason. Why, its very very difficult to even bring Mohanlal and Mammootty together in a film. That says a lot about their insecurity.
Another great actor, Srinivasan, storywriter of a great Mallu flick, Udayanan Thaaram, starring Mohanlal, clearly stated that the role he[Srinivasan] portrayed in the film was actually poking fun of Mohanlal and his insecurity.
Mammootty and Mohanlal are some of the greatest actors in India, but the fact remains...they don't like competition in their own backyard...

Hi ON,
I do not intend to say that there is no internal politics in mallu cinema. I agree with you that superstar's are insecure and they may be involved in these politics. I am not trying to justify the superstars. But Thilakan's argument that he is sidelined based on CASTE is baseless. Bringing in caste in between these cinema politics is quite bad. As I said, it is hard for me to believe that all those directors and producers are not casting Thilakan based on his caste. Regarding Udayanannu Tharam, Mohanlal is the lead actor in that film. Do you think that Mohanlal is so naive to act on a role which pokes fun of "real life Mohanlal" ? And if he really knew that, he should be appreciated for acting in a movie which makes fun of him. And it also hints at the fact that he have selected the role based on the character only.

The truth is that both Mammooty and Mohanlal are very good actors and also stars. Although other stars including Sreenivasan are good, frankly they cannot be compared with these two guys. Prithviraj is a possible alternative but he need to concentrate on his acting skills. I like all of them and see most of the movies.
All movie lovers like these actors for their acting skills and performance; I don't think anyone will care about their CASTE. Except for Thilakan.....

National Awards - a joke
by Samia Baig on Jan 26, 2008 03:04 AM  | Hide replies

It is a worst kept secret that National Film Awards, esp the best actor and actress, is decided based on politics rather than merit. It is no surprise that Rajiv Gandhi wanted his one-time friend to win the National Award in 1990, knowing that elections were around the corner. One have also heard of money changing hands to get Anil Kapoor the award for Pukar (a disastrous movie). And Raveena Tandon got it because one of her relative was in the jury. Deve Gowda ensured that Dr Rajkumar got Dada Saheb Phalke Award etc etc. It is sickening

Arundhati rejected the Sahitya Akademi award given by indian goverment for authors stating these kind of awards have connection w/politics.

Now sankalp, you are worser than arundhati roy.
You are talking on dividing the list among religions, grow up man.
There are all people from all religions that are on the list. Don't just judge a person's religion status based on their name or from which state they come from, assuming tht state has majority of certain people who belong to a religion.

Learn and grow up, arundhati roy is the michael moore of india. Just because she degrades indian government and their views, doesn't been you shut her up.

You first learn to respect and be tolerant of all religions, and not be judgemental.

-MGR: "rickshawkaran" in 1971
-kamal hassan: "moondram pirai" in 1982
-kamal hassan: "nayakan" in 1987
-kamal hassan: "indian" in 1996
-vikram: "pithamagan" in 2003

Hindi actor who got national awards
-17 actors-i won't mention since list is long.

Malayalam actors who got national awards
-12 actors

Bengali actors who got national awards
-4 actors

Kannada actors who got national awards

So what do you say eagle, tht most of the awards are gone to tamil actors. Even if its kamal hassan, he is the only one in tamil industry that has versatility until now.

Thilakan,we the ordinary people can see through the games and politics played in the film field ,specially when it comes to awards.

To us,you are the BEST! Your are one of the finest actors India has ever seen.Your acting skills are unparallel. But alas, our mainstream cinema goes after song and dance and skinshow,so you are not given the rightful recognition.Let the superstars rule with sunglasses and suit, but most people like you and Nedumudi when it comes to acting. The caste politics played by the Trivandrum lobby is cheap and streetlevel.Doesn't suit 21st century chaps, but see from what backgrounds those fools come from. What else to expect from them?
