Great movie
by munna on Jan 14, 2008 09:20 PM

I loved the movie, though I must say that the Irfan-Konkana duo make you want more of them, they were absolute brilliant!
Shiney-Shilpa left no real mark. And Shilpa sobbing over her brief platonic relation apologising to KK was too damn much to be digested....no woman is THAT submissive or insane! This was totally unreal.
Peronally I loved- In dino/ O meri jaan/ Baatein kuchh ankahi si- You have to grant they helped the story, though the lyrics could do with some editing.

Metro review

I just saw this movie and was really shocked at the role prtrayed by Shilpa! Her husband cheats on her for 2 yrs...but she apologizes to him for a 5 wk platonic relationship!! And she does not even react to the fact that her husband is having an affair --- this just shows the typical male perspective of the male story writer and director. No self respecting woman would take KK's character back...he is shown as heartless jerk.

Also, could NOT STAND the music trio shrieking every 15-20 minutes. "In Dino" was the only nice song. All other songs were loud, tuneless and the trio were painful to watch.

Also..would have liked to see more of Shiney-Shilpa and Shilpa-Konkona interactions. Got bored with the Kangana track..too predictable and sterotypical.

The only thing that worked for this movie was the acting which was good. The director maqnaged to keep all the story tracks together.

I would really like this director to take a hard look at how women really react or behave instead of just showing only the limited male perspective.

Spare and good

1) Irrfan and Konkona - magical duo. So many good scenes together, including the shaadi ka ghoda. Konkona is so awesomely good, it has to be seen minutely to believe what she can do with each tiny scene.

2) 4-5 songs were too much in the movie, but I think each song did lot more in progressing the film.

3) Raja Sen's review was good, though I agree with one poster that he is over-analytic. We do not even identify with which scene he is basing his analysis on.

4) Shilpa did good, but man! does a woman as her have to cry so much, cry all the time. She is so tragical, why would anyone be in love with her - KayKay or SHiny.
Konkona should have done double role.

5) Kangana is quite different, Raja is right, she does not 'overreach'.

I found something missing too...

And I figured what it was. It was the fact that the movie began with the crackling promise of being 'unconventional' and 'different', with real-life characters and superb performances. And it ended like a Diwali cracker gone wrong, honoring each Bollywood cliche from 'aadarsh Bharatiya nari' to 'revelation on wedding day' and 'true love wins'. One would have expected the scriptwriter to follow through on the promise of being 'realistic'.

good movie but snooty review
by Rahul s on May 28, 2007 06:18 AM

"first well-crafted multi-narrative film"? Have you seen all muti-narrative films in india to say this?

K.G George made "Adaminte Variyellu" (Malayalam) 24 years back. It won the second best film state award in 1983. It was kind of artisic, well made movie.

Metro is definitely a good movie but in your review looks like more than reviewing, you want to impress readers with your knowledge of foreign films, with all those references and links..

Get real man!

Metro rocks box office, earns Rs 6.5 cr worldwide in 4 days
New Delhi, May 18: A ''realistic'' and "engaging" portrayal of life in a modern metropolitan city, coupled with brilliant performances by Shilpa Shetty, Konkona Sen, Irrfan Khan and yesteryears%u2019 star Dharmendra, in Anurag Basu's 'Life In a Metro' have left the audience as well as critics floored, translating into a rocking box office response for the film.

Released on May 11 across the world, the UTV-produced 'Life...in a Metro', a look into the lives of people living in a metropolitan city where the fast pace of life leaves no time for emotions and feelings leading to flippant relationships, opened to gushing audience reactions and amazing box office collections, garnering total gross box office reciepts of Rs. 6.5 crore in just 4 days, UTV sources said.

Great reviews in India as well as across the world greeted the release of %u2018Life In a Metro%u2019, which deals with an increasing number of heartbreaks and agony in a Metro city be it Delhi, Mumbai, London or Melbourne - an increasing number of short-lived relationships arising out of human beings having too many choices and chasing too many dreams.

The excellent response to %u2018Life in a Metro%u2019-the film got a decent opening overseas while collections in the cities picked up remarkably during the opening week due to word-of-mouth publicity - is being seen in trade circles as another example of the innovative distribution strategy of releasing a film with limited number of prints and increasing them in subsequent weeks as it picked up in popularity.

Attributing the excellent opening taken by 'Life In a Metro', which had its London premi? in Leicester Square (the first time for an Indian movie) besides premieres in world metros like Dubai, Melbourne, Sydney and Mumbai, to its unique distribution strategy, sources in the UTV said. ''In yet another strategic coup in the distribution space, UTV released the film with 163 prints across India. This kept demand at all-time high levels and the positive word of mouth led UTV to increase prints across India in the second week by 20.'' Says Suniel Wadhwa, AVP India Distribution, ''we were super confident of the product and knew that word of mouth and reviews would create a huge demand post release.

Our strategy of releasing limited prints and generating high demand for the film ensured that we would have audiences clamouring for tickets which would help keep the film buoyant and in demand for a sustained period.'' For example, there was a 40 per cent jump in collections on Saturday as compared to Friday followed by a 66 per cent hike on Sunday compared to Friday.

Also, in an industry where the average drop in collections on Monday is as high as 40 per cent, 'Metro' recorded a drop of less than 20 per cent. Trade sources say that collections of %u2018Life In a Metro%u2019, which is being seen as %u2018%u2019entertaining as well as thought provoking%u2019%u2019 with a theme that holds true for any metropolitan city in today%u2019s world, could well further pick up by word of mouth in the coming days. They expect it to score in the cities, specially in the multiplexes, given its brilliant portrayal of life in a metro city.

In fact, this is the second back-to-back release by UTV, after 'The Namesake', where UTV's strategy to release a film with a limited number of prints and subsequently increasing the number of prints has reaped dividends.

In case of 'The Namesake', UTV increased the number of prints in the second Week based on incredible word of mouth publicity and rave reviews.

The film has notched excellent collections overseas. In the UAE, 'Metro got a grand opening of 109723 US Dollars, higher than blockbusters like 'Taxi No 9211' and 'Bluffmaster'.

In the United Kingdom, %u2018Metro%u2019 earned a decent 121,650 Dollars during the opening weekend, with a healthy print average of 2,967 Dollars, figuring at number 16 on the charts.

The film has also evoked praise in Bollywood circles. For example, when filmmaker Rakesh Roshan saw %u2018Metro%u2019, he was left floored by the film, especially by the work put in by writer director Anurag Basu and brilliant performances by its ensemble cast comprising Shilpa Shetty, Shiney Ahuja, Kay Kay Menon, Konkana Sen Sharma, Sharman Joshi, Kangna Ranaut and Irrfan Khan.

Metro -- Better u forget it ASAP
by pramit nag on May 20, 2007 10:57 PM

Well..Mr. Anurag Basu, I was expecting much better from u where the concept was phenomenal and u proved ur caliber in this kind of films before. I went to watch Metro yesterday here in New Jersey and found people were laughing at your movie and it was too much disappointing for us who admire you and your creativity.Couple of things which made Metro a super flop:
1. Unnecessary songs and gang of Pritam which breaks the rythm.
2. Oldage home relationship...lots of qs arise here.
3. Last derby race of Irfan Khan which was ridiculous though Irfaan did a great job.
