i have not seen umrao jaan, but i know it must be a boring movie.Ash is only beautiful but not a good acterss at all.there are very actress in our bolly wood which are beautiful as well as good actress.ash ais only a plastic doll not more than that.
Best thing about the film is J.P has not copied frame to frame. Great job he has tried to show amiran journey into becoming umrao jaan. No resemblence to previous umrao jaan. On the negative side slow and boring at times. Most importantly ash does not fit the bill of umrao jaan. She lacks the attitude of tawaif. Very true we get to see more of ash and less of umrao. Abhisekh is great especially the pre interval scence with shabana azmi. other cas tis just o.k. khulbhushan was the best.
I am not surprised to learn that this movie is a flop as Aishwarya Rai is a specialist in making such movies.I dont remember her single hit cinema and will not expect any at closing stages of her career.
The critics have torn the movie apart into shreds!
Although Umrao Jaan is not a classic in any way, it is a genuine attempt by J.P. Datta to bring on screen the Mirza Huwa's novel by the same name. He never claimed he was making a masterpiece!
Some of the critics comments are: 1)It is a dreadfully slow and boring film--- Nobody claimed it was a scorching, action thriller...it is a literary novel - a saga on Umrao Jaan's life - being adapted to screen... Muzaffar Ali's version was as slow if not slower!
2)The sets, costumes, locales, linguistic nuances are not authentic. It is NOT a historical period drama.Just a story open to interpretations.Besides Muzafar Ali's Umrao was an art film which was not a great commercial success. The new version is no art film.
3)Abhishek and Ash suck.. Well, after Mr. & Mrs Smith, this is the best onscreen chemistry seen. Ash has never looked so good since Devdas..She looks like the most beautiful woman in the world. She never claimed to be the best actress in the world.
So instead of comparing it to the old version lets accept it as it is although the music, dances & editing of the film left a lot to be desired!!
