Why the fuss about this movie another (unwanted) bollywood hit? These guys don't know how to make pictures and we audience are even more foolish to make it a hit.

i think it is the best sentimental movie i came across.keep up the spirit aishwarya
by nidhi bassi on Nov 05, 2006 06:41 PM

i think it is really difficult to create a movie which is based on a person's life especially a women.umrao jaan is a women who is in search of her identity as well as a home which she calls her own.
her sufferings doesnt only reveals her womenhood been exploited ,but also her love for her parents, family and even the members of her place in luckhnow being suppressd.
aishwarya is chosen by umrao jaan (a role by itself).abhishekh is a self made man.he is a self respectable person in the movie .but after all he is a man.i think aishwarya and abhishekh are made for each other coz the chemistery is mind blowing.in the movie it clearly showd the sky meeting the sea.in the last it shd a man will alwaz remain a man even if he does wrong but a women is sinn if she has a relation, but i believe kiron kher shd hav suitd 4 this role.

Umrao ki jaan basi hai ab bhi Rekha mein..
by Surekha Tenneti Venugopal on Nov 05, 2006 01:36 PM

Why do some filmmakers think that opulence of sets and their stars swathed in silken robes and diamonds can make a re-made film better than the original ?
Devdas, and Umrao Jaan made the same mistake- all that opulence actually takes away from the real theme, real emotions, real acting.
Parineeta was a teriffic remake (though the beautiful original Bimal Roy film had the unparalleled MeenaKumari and Ashok Kumar) not because of any glamour-quotient, but because of the authentic ambience, beautifully executed emotional-play.
In the new Umrao Jaan, the central character, Rai, may be lovely, but weak in the required kotha-kind-of dancing, and of course, acting.
Umrao Jaan belongs to the inimitable Rekha, and Rekha alone.

The beauty of Umrao....
by Mej on Nov 05, 2006 12:56 PM

There is no better excuse than bias and prejudice to run down a movie like Umrao Jaan . And when someone of the calibre and no nonsense like JP saab and ASH get together many eyebrows are bound to be raised.
Would anyone speak thru their ass if some scarwny journalist who didnt get an interview with ASH wrote thrash that its shot in Jaipur...the topi is not the norm and other bullshit. Such petty gossip is just made to malign the unit & it's sad we "Indians" resort to such crap.
Is there anyone in this current breed of "actors" who can match steps to ASH's ada and dancing capabilities. Her nuances and expressions in "Salaam" are to die for. Her heartbreaking scene in Faizabad and the "Bitiya na kijyo" are superlative. She never looked more humane & etheral in the same movie..miliion bucks! Im sure this same group of people who speak of Tehzeeb will drool at ASH in DHOOM2.
Shabana as the Khanum and Abhishek as the Nawab have excelled in their parts. Chemistry hai ;)

The sore point of the film is its lenghth-needs trimming. 1 song only and a few scenes wouldve made this film a classic. Still 8/10. JP had made it more endearing by filming it in todays era. Bravo ASH & JP saab

this review says it all
by Anjali on Nov 04, 2006 10:36 PM

I couldn't agree more with this review. Last night I went for this movie, paid $10 for ticket, sat impatiently until interval, after which I slipped into the theater where they were playing Don (unfortunately ticket for Don last night was only $6). I wouldn't say that Don was amazing or anything but I liked the end...I loved that little twist in the end. Like one of my male friend said, I came for this movie for Aishwarya but if she keeps crying all the time how can I enjoy her.... :)I am definitely looking forward to see Dhoom 2...Hrithik looks great in the promos...Aish too...ofcourse Abhi is there...

review of umrao jaan
by Ajitkumar on Nov 04, 2006 09:48 PM  | Hide replies

is this a smear campaign going on in the press against this wonderful movie? has the press been paid to write such lousy reviews of what is a near classic? in todays world of senseless movies such masterpieces surely do no0t have a space. is rediff doing justice in giving such lob sided views to its readers. we saw the fil in dubai and it was a full house and everyone felt it even surpassed the original in many ways. can sukanya verma explain/ does she understand music and dance? does she know how to appreciate real art?
