May Indian movies are not suitable for Oscar, but they are well made for Indian culture. Oscar academy jurry my look in their style and culture. Nothing to be dissapointed go ahead make more & more good movies.
It was obvious that paheli is not goin to be nominated. In Inida we send movies based on "masala" (i.e constumes and sets relecting Indian culture), while this might work initially its not goin to fetch nominations everytime. Our film critics dont dissect film in terms of acting and direction. I wonder why "black" was not sent to OSCAR.
Why is it that we start blaming our culture and our own taste if our movies are not liked by "The Oscars"?
Our movies are our identity. Thats the way we live. Songs and dances are an integral part of our culture. I don't understand why we should be ashamed of it, just because a handful of americans do not understand it. All this is not to say that Paheli deserved to win an Oscar. I havent even seen the movie. So never mind..
I agree that many of our movies are total crap and untolerable (and bad copies of good movies), but so are many hollywood movies. And yes there are many well made movies in indian cinema inspite of whether they win the oscar or not. So who cares?
it was soooooo boring that someone like me, who is used to our dumb stupid irrelevant song and dance sequences since childhood, also couldn't sit thru it!!
how cud we expect hollywood ppl to sit thru it??
lets be reasonable..hindi movies are 99% bad fantasy crap-ppl do things wich nobody does in real life, they wear clothes nobody wears in real life, they sing and dance stupid lines when nothing is required, there is too much melodrama and naatak and "indian traditions" and "culture" stuff like-karvachautth happening..
but indians will still like dis only coz our real lives are so meesed up dat we like to sit and go thru 3 hours of escape from our real life and so we love movies wich take us into a world of perfece happy endings...
but other parts of world are notlike dis..look at hollywood and europe and their movies and their culture and lifestyle, they need something real; stimulating; lasting; something that makes them think and cry..
atleast for next 50 years let us forget about any hopes of any international recognition and be happy in our dumb and loud song and dance routines...
all i want to know is y does paheli not deserve to be sent to the OSCARS. c'mon it was a well made movie with some great performances.
besides y should we really care about the OSCARS?
our culture is well reflected in our song dance sequences. which oder country makes films with songs and dances as a part of them. its our speciality. so y scrap it.
I would not compare it wid oder movies of the world or even Black. but paheli was a good movie.
You give them a vision of India having greedy poor looking Indian people in it. I am 100% sure they will select our movie. Like they did for Mother India, Salam Bombay and Lagaan.
In fact Paheli was an excellent film. One of the best ever produced by the Bombay film industry. It was based on traditional Indian folklore and was charming and whimsical. Its settings were amazing - its acting strong and good and it had a lot of charm. The reason it was not selected is that Americans particularly are very distant from this culture and cannot empathise with whimsicality of subtlety. Its a great mistake to take Hollywood opinion about films set so deeply in the Indian tradition.
Because it is a stupid movie. It's shame on India that this kind of movie got selected for Oscar. People might have laught on us. BLACK would have been a better choice. Let me tell you one thing SRK may fool people in India and to some extent ABCDs, but not to the Oscar committee.
