I am very disappointed that Paheli didn't get nominated but I am furthermore fed up with all this "Black deserves...".
Hey ! Black is a complete remake of a Hollywood movie**, so..... Guys... it isn't even original !!!! All the acting is the same as in the American movie.
So please, you can disapprove the choice of Paheli being in the race for the oscar, but don't try to put Black as the best movie because it isn't....
One more thing : **the movie called "The Miracle worker" directed by Arthur Penn was though nominated in 1962 !!!!!!!
Why a stupid film like PAHELI ever got nomiated is a paheli by itself. You need some substance in the movie to be at the Oscar. Hopefully, someone shall solve the nomination Paheli better next time.
I don't know why Indians think Bollywood films should win Oscar? Just like it doesn't look nice if India wants to offer any award to any Hollywood movies in the same way why Holywood should.... It's totally two different cultures that these two film industries potray. Although images of Americans are present in the bedrooms of almost every nation - the vice versa can't be possible. So why bother? Rather Indians should think of ways to make more relevant achievements possible - say like whether spouses of indian skilled workers should be allowed to work or not (right now uncle Sam wants them to sit at home) or say how not to fight a war with Pakistan and thereby bleed the western arms industry..... does it make sense?
Indian films that have been sent for Oscars in recent years are popular hits, which is clearly NOT what the academy looks for.. Even the Hollywood movies that gets Oscar nominations are not always popular hits. IQBAL would surely have done better. It's "overcoming-the-odds" story is often seen in Hollywood movies. It was presented very nicely and hence could have gone down well with academy.
for the best foreign film, Hollywood votes for those movies that they wish they made but didnt have the guts to. why should the world's largest film industry(Bolywood) look for a nod from Hollywood? we dont see the Hollyood press agonising over not winning a Filmfare award..its time we shrugged this inferiority complex...there are millions across the globe who love Hindi films for what they are.
Paheli was a wrong choice for Oscar and now we got the result. It was one of the worst movie in 2005 , no storyline, no acting , nothing at all. when we could walk out of Paheli then why not those poor juries. after all they are not fascinated with this srk and gangs!
I wonder when will we overcome our fixation with America. Indian films are made for India and Indians, why work up a sweat if our movies do not get nominated to an American awards ceremony wherein films are judged as per American viewpoints. We should have the self respect not to be bothered by such non issues and wish them best for their awards ceremonies.
HKA (after editing few songs) could have been the ideal choice for Oscar nomination from India. This movie has a beautiful narrative of three real life characters against a strong backdrop of politically decaying India's of 70's. Not only just dailogues even the India's 70's been captured authentically.
I am appalled at why such a critically acclaimed movie was left out and Paheli was sent instead.
I wonder selectors must be thinking on same age old rotten thought - Paheli shows Indian culture and values. Gosh !!!! give me a break. Oscar is serious competetion. Countries compete by sending their best work for international recognition. Our nomination was more like a marketing promo for Indian Tourism industry
