Some points to consider: 1) Paheli was a very nice film. 2) Memorable performance by rani only. 3) Ear-pleasing music and excellent cinematography. 4) Even good choreography.
But the movie is only fit for indian audience. It is totally ridiculous that it got considered for oscars. Film like black are perfect contenders for oscars. No sorry for paheli for missing the oscar.
Why Paheli didn't get Oscar nom? The question should be, "Why Paheli was send for Oscar nomination????" When we had movies like BLACK, PAREENITA & regional movies, why Paheli was choosen??? An entirely wrong decision by the jury.
The writer of this article wants us to believe that there is a conspiracy against Indian movies and that French or Spanish movies are preferred. He forgets that Quantity does not mean Quality. Though we make so many movies, we do not make GOOD movies. And Paheli was not at all the movie to be featured at the Oscars. By general consensus, BLACK was the movie to be featured. But thanks to Shah Rukh Khan and his \"jack\", BLACK went off the list. It is infact an insult to sensible cinema to have sent PAHELI to the Oscars. We all knew this was the fate it deserved. Hope we are more sensible in our judgment next year.
for all those idiots who think BLACK should have been nominated, let me tell you that it was a direct lift from the film, THE MIRACLE WORKER.PAHELI on the other hand is a folk story which is told in Rajasthani houses even today.IN MY OPINION I THINK PAHELI deserved an OSCAR nomination at least.
I cant understand on wht basis Paheli is selected for Oscar when Black is excellent. The people whoever have selected Pehali for Oscar have done partiallity. This is disgusting.
It`s simple, we send a wrong movie & we got the right result. You send a properly selected movie, you can have fair chance of getting nominated. No discussion needed.
I think it is unanimous that Paheli was not the right choice for the Oscars. Yesterday when a reporter asked Shahrukh why Paheli should be nominated in Oscar, his reply was: "b'coz I am there in the movie". Such arrogance.
That's all right that it's based on a folk tale and made by redoubtable Amol Palekar but crossing barriers of understanding and reading of the yankees minds is what our filmmakers have to keep in mind while making a film. I am sure Palekar won't give a damn about Oscar nomination, but nation as a whole all are disheartened. Moreover, yankees are rather arrogant about what they want out of a movie. This is kind of a artistic racism that works in Hollywood. Paheli maybe a good movie by Indian standards but for international audience our filmmakers have to come more closer to the realism. No more singing and dancing nonsense for heaven's sake. It's have been our habit to transform a war movie into a musical one, remember Haqeekat. No more of that. Bollywood must learn otherwise it will remain "Bollywood", a copycat of Hollywood. Got it ?
Yes, Paheli is not the right choice,. BLACK should have been there. Paheli is a good movie, but since it strongly expresses one of our Indian culture, we can't expect or force them to enjoy our culture and award the movie. but, on the other hand if we would have sent BLACK, definitly we would have got awarded or atleast got nominated. I don't know why it didn't happen.
Indian Film Commitee members should think from American point of view before selecting the movie for Oscar.
