Notwithstanding the heaps of praise Black is worth, perhaps the most underated and ignored aspect of this movie is its awsome ability to raise massive waves of turbulence in the viewers psyche; dont we casually take the gifts of sight, sound, speech for granted, rather ruthlessly at times? The proceedings succeed in making one wince with guilt at the fierce determination of Mitchelle who, despite her diability, ends up high on the achievement ladder, and in the process making our inane sorrows luk so petty, our constant self-pitying so pathetic, our pains so miniscule..,yeah.. our urbanized desensitised, hard boiled sensibilties are given are rude shake( deservedly so), tears flow and beleive me ,folks, the show ends with a cathartic, almost therapautic, after effects. One is awstuck with reawkening of ones humane n sympathetic side,..the films major payoff > thank you Bhansali, for making us realize what SIGHT n LIGHT is all about and what darkness does to BLACKend/ bruised souls !!

How , can such a movie, bold enough to not care abt collections. evoke such mediocre response from this lady. may be she missed all the candy floss in this movie.
no credit for rani or the other actors , only ayesha gets a lethargic mention as if forced to.
can u get someone to comment on movies , who is slightly less less of a critic???

Black is beautiful
by kush on Feb 18, 2005 05:19 PM

The movie Black not just tells us about Bhansali's genius , it also unmasks the other directors ... all of them...in 2 hrs its a story well told.. without songs.. and in the other movies: They have music composed by some Anu malik or someone... and all the songs smell of javed akhtar alone ! and all of them are so boring.. and a songless Black is so beautiful!
B for Black and B for Bhansali!

Ms. Sita Menon, first of all, there are other ways to practice your convoluted english. If SLB is to be blamed of unnecessarily polishing the matter, you should be hanged. Secondly, criticising a great work of art, is not easy, I agree, but you don't seem to have a well thought out plan to criticise it too. Definitely, there will be short-comings, but your insight seems too shallow.

Oscars would be an UNDER-APPRECIATION for ''Black''
by Shovan on Feb 17, 2005 05:28 PM  | Hide replies

Black represents true work of a maestro. Sanjay Leela Bhansali has proven it that bollywood lacks no talent when it comes to world class cinema. Its in the hands of a director to bring out the best in an actor. Thts precisely wht Sanjay has done it.

Amitabh needs no direction. He too proved that he is a living legend. Rani is simply brilliant. Others have done it amazing too.

I feel Oscars would be an UNDER-APPRECIATION for this masterpiece. May be this is the best bollywood movie of our time Any way lets hope to see similar ones again and again.

This reviewer is awful

This reviewer is awful and lives in her own world. Open your eyes and enjoy the masterpiece. Rarely are such movies made in India.

I am just dissappointed to read a pathetic review of a great film. Its high time you picked people with better sensibilities for this critic job.
Thank god the general public have given thumbs down to this review and gone about in enjoying this film and pushing it strongly to a well deserved mega hit status.Regarding this film I have to just say that never before in indian cinema,or should i say world cinema, have all th cinematic elements like story , screenplay, dialogues, direction, performance, cinematography, editing, music,at direction come together so beautifully and in a perfect fit.And never again will viewing a film be same after this experience!

I read with interest most of the reviews of Black on the net and also viewers response to it. In the numerous writings about the movie, nobody has mentioned that Black is an adaptation of Helen Keller's life.
The story of Black is far from original and a number of scenes lifted from " The Miracle Worker" (1962).Especially the scene where Amitabh teaches the girl to eat with a spoon after sending the family out of the room.
I felt cheated watching the movie after having watched "The Miracle Worker" The only change from the original movie is that the teacher here is a male (Anne Sullivan, Helen's teacher)and he has Alzheimer's
The film will win an Oscar indeed! In the category of Plagiarism if there was one such!

mall scenes of shimla containing the gaiety theatre were sets created in bombay!), to resul pookutty for his extra ordinary ( ok i am running out of adjectives!) sound engineering ( just perfect! loud and distinct when required and so quiet at times that u can hear the dress ruffling against the skin when the characters sit..or for that matter the sound of the palms clinging on to each other hard as does amitabh in one scene. Thanks for all the above people and the rest for making this great film.So great that even after three viewings the film does not let me go.
Hey sita..how about if you watch it once more..i know what happened earlier..in your hurry in seeing the film first and reviewing it first, u left ur sensibilities at home.. come back and join the gang !
