I saw Black yesterday only and the only statement that befitting this movie: "BLACK is POWERFUL". I mean full credit to the director who chose an unconventional theme and portrayed it to brilliance. Usually hot shot directors lose their conviction when lured by the economics of Box-Office, but Bhansali has shown that good, original story will always find an audience.
why we should look upon the likes and dislikes of western populations,
I just read Gokul's review certainly it was disappointment, well hollywood are more concentrating on Inidan market to sell their movies. We Indians no need to because we have our market in India.
Black is indeed one of the greatest film in Indian film industry, Box office verdict whatever it may be It is the all time best film, great perfomance of ayesha kapur amitabh and rani.
Black is indeed beautiful, poignant, rivetting and a bold statement in the hollywood class from a bollywood director. There are subtle differences - though.
As Sita Menon mentions it - there is a stylized presentation on occasions, which does tend to unnecessarily dramatize the inherently dramatic situations. Compare it with "The Miracle Worker" - the 1962 hollywood version of the 1959 Broadway play and the 2000 remake by Disney. The first half of black is derived scene-by-scene from these movies. (I didn't read a single review of BLACK which acknowledges these facts)
But that in no way diminishes Sanjay Leela Bhansali's effort.
The anchor of the film is Amitabh. Amitabh's caliber, sincerity in approach, maturity of thought and expression is evident in - role after role, movie after movie, year after year throughout is career. It is not his fault that he was reared in the "formula world" of the Hindi film industry.
Despite the film, the story, the director - he has given us pure gold - take Anand, Zanjeer, Deewar, Sholay, Trishul, Muquaddar Ka Sikandar, Namak Haram, and recently - Khaakee, Dev and Black. Black is heightened all the more because of Amitabh's performance...

Hey Sunil you lost the plot halfway. This movie just stars amitabh, not made by amitabh. Got nothing to do with Zanjeer or any other movie. Did you forget that movies are made by directors not stars?
It is bitterly cold and i dreaded the thought of finishing a Sunday with a cold trudge to a not so close cinema in London to watch this movie. I don't have any one to accost me for this movie. But then, i had all along imagined BLACK to be a movie to be seen by myself. Surely it was moving, definitely welling up more than a tear but at the end of it the thoughts which stuck with me as i walked out into the cold were appreciation of Sanajay L Bhansali's courage to handle such a theme, the excellent performances especially that of Rani and Ayesha Kapur a with a pleasing visual splendour. Amitabh is a thinking actor and he has done ample justice to his role and character. There are disappointments for me and they remain largely consistent in most well intentioned Hindi movie, namely weak scripts and very elusive subtlety in sight and sound. In this movie as well, the narrative is at times soporific and exchanges very often monotonous. Finally research into a topic which so very diligently and intelligently done in Hollywood movies is missing. yes i did walk out into the cold night touched in the heart and wishing to make a difference to someone. A good movie but not a classicfor sure
Must say bhansali has proved that Bollywood anint about prancing around trees..or in modern day terms women brashly displaying their bodies.....
Amitabh is vying hard for the man of this century as well....and Rani has proved that she can do other things besides acting a fool in karan johar movies.....
Thanks to the director for making me return to watch hindi movies...
Arent u the person who reviewed Swaeds also.If u r so smart that u find these two movies less than good, then u better stop reviewing movies and start directing films.I dunno what is wrong with the rediff reviewers-they damn anything and everything.
BLACK.....AWESOME. Don't miss it!!its too good.its magic!!!! and i think this reviewer was drunk while writing this review. Dear sita plz don't bother to write any more such "informative and meaningful review" from now on. Plzzzzzz....give us all a break.
