nautanki
by Vijay on Aug 27, 2005 07:36 PM

Indian movies are nautanki and by definition they are caricatures.
The author is accusing an Indian movie of being precisely what it
wants to be. A review such as this is more appropriate for something
like Braveheart, not for a full blooded Indian movie like Mangal
Pandey.

The message that was conveyed by the movie was clear enough.
British Good, Empire BAD. I dont know what all the fuss about
"historical accuracy" is about! Does the author seriously believe that
the descendents of Edward Longshanks were infact half-Scottish half-
French? If he does not, then would he critisize that movie for
"historical inaccuracy" and deem it a worthless move? If not, why not?

I dont understand how Rediff can publish such rubbish.

Comments on Rediff\'s coverage of Mangal Pandey
by Deep Purple on Aug 27, 2005 07:09 PM

Heya, you know what, I haven\'t seen \"The Rising\" yet. It may very well be a bad film. However, from reading your coverage of the film from pre-production to release, it does seem that Rediff totally has it in for Aamir Khan. Its almost like you want the film to flop and for him to do badly, so you can gloat about it. We all know that bad films will be made in bulk, and the exceptional good film will also be made once in a while. Trashing someone based on whatever personal agenda you guys have does not seem in good light for a news portal. Especially when it becomes obvious to the reader (there are several that feel the same way, so I\'m not the exception). Stick to the facts and actual reporting. Your readers will appreciate that more. Leave the trashing to the \'catty\' magazines. Unless of course, your strategic direction is to head that way...A long time reader\'s $0.02.

look at all the other films out at the moment - they are all just cleavage and cliche!!
by Amrit on Aug 27, 2005 06:47 PM

I think you are absolutely wrong, look at all the other films out at the moment - they are all just cleavage and cliche!! The Rising was one of the best films i've seen in years!! And A.R's soundtrack was great, it fit perfectly with the events.

I'm not a very big fan of Indian films as i tend to think they don't have much depth, however this film stands out from the rest. Many young Indians in England who've never really heard of Mangal Pandey(myself included) have found The Rising to be very educational and entertaining.

what the hell this review is.
by geet kandya on Aug 27, 2005 05:16 PM

aamir khan is the only one man in bollywood. comparing his role and performance in mangal pandey to that of shahrukh in asoka is totally utter nonsense. this movie was not a classic, i agree, but it was not too bad either. i am not a die-hard aamir khan fan but i felt that thecritic was being unfair to ketan mehta and aamir. it is not easy making period films, and that too at such a large scale. i think the team of mangal pandey have done a tremondous job. rediff, please hire critics that talk sense, and not those who give unfair judgements.

Why? Simply, why Raja?
by rajesh on Aug 27, 2005 04:31 PM

Critics aren't usually as vitriolic as you. I'm surprised that you are so full of bile when you talk of Amir Khan. Every word, every sentence, every inflection and tone seems steeped only to criticise. How would you have made the movie Raja? Would you have done a better job? The armchair sure has made you lazy. Slander pays now I suppose. But it pays you now only to starve you later for soon the people whom you reach out to impress with your words will no longer respect you. Simply because you are not a fair critic. Neither are you an expert on history or films for that matter. Where does that leave you?
