I think stills of Swades can be put before featuring any of the movies, because, it is a good replacement for a film division !! Totally boring, frustrated, slow paced, the movie is totally a disater !!
I don't really want to get into depth about the greatness of the movie as I am short of time but also can't tolerate the bashing it has recieved from the critics. All I have to say about this movie is that I started watching this movie at 3:30 am just for about 15 minutes but got so badly hooked to it that couldn't help watch the whole movie until 7 o'clock in the morning. I really loved that movie and would like to write this to encourage Ashutosh to divulge in such masterful endeavors more often and although the response wasn't too good, the movie was a very honest attempt and touched me deeply. Thanks Ashutosh.
I am not a SRK fan.I think he is over-rated,and would be nothing without the ostentatious packaging his directors dish his movies out with. So I went to see Swades with a prejudice.
At the end of 3 hrs, or 3.5 hrs, whatever it was, I had no clue so much time had elapsed. The movie was, as someone dear put it, Phenomenal. It shows movie-making for what it should be- a medium of a message.
Even beyond the performances, the cinematography, editing, costumes, dialogues, and the subtle humor - all shone with the quality of tempered rendition. It suffered from neither the excessive self-loathing of Satyajit Ray, nor exotic lavishness of the Johars, Chopras and their ilk.
I have no idea where the adjective of 'documentary' came from for this movie. Unfortunately this adjective is so well stuck that even the director in a recent interview dared not to challenge it.In his heart of hearts, however, I hope that he believes he made a movie every minute of the way.
This is a movie much better than Lagaan, and the director delivers independent of its star cast. In other words, even the presence of Shah Rukh Khan could not tarnish the movie, thats how well made it is. Congrats,Ashu
Its a great and very insightful review written! Not being one of the talented film critics, I generally refrain from writing on the subject matter. But seeing the arbitrary reviews written for a movie which made tremendous appeal to me, I thought it is worth to just show the other dimension of the controversy.
Movies reflect the times, and box office reflects the moment! At the moment, such a movie cannot be accepted by an audience totally enthralled by the mesmerizing atmosphere of 'call centres'! Like a class on theory of relativity cannot be given to primary school kids, so in movies one has to see the conscience level of audience; and unfortunately, today it is abysmally low! What I am surprised by is that every institute of MBA demands and every coaching institute preaches the same lesson, but people somehow end up taking it in, with lots of money factor, probably. But that is it! It would be truly a shame for the Indian audience, if such movies stop coming through! From me to all, its a must see movie!
The film is also replete with symbolisms - conspicuous by its absence in Hindi mainstream cinema.Mohan Bhargava (Shahrukh Khan) is a Project Manager at NASA working on Global Precipitation Measurement a technology that takes the guesswork away from forecasting rainfall. This is the beginning of the recurrent water motif that Gowariker has so masterfully utilized in his film. From the affinity of Mohan to mineral water (one bottle of which he gifts to a minstrel who he picks up on his caravan; to a child water vendor who acts as a catalyst in the protagonist's life; the singular channel of change in a village; the ultimate ablution in a water body where Mohan washes his soiled feet; to Geeta's (Gayatri Joshi) first question to Mohan regarding the five rivers of India, the source of life acts as refrain throughout the film. Other deftly applied symbolisms abound especially remarkable is one where Gowariker, the director, removes a great class divide in a village an erected movie screen to bring to the fore what the film stands a coming together, a unison.
There is no doubt Swades is a great movie. In fact I have been telling everybody that please watch Swades though it has been criticised by media. But now I think Indian audience is not capable handling such an intense subject. Even thought its today's subject which must touch to the heart of each and every software profdessional. Ashutosh u have done a great job. Now I'm eagerly waiting for your next movie. And even if Swades fails at the box office please don't loose confidence in making movies on subjects like reverse brain drain. All the bset.
