India tops world hunger chart
by Anumakonda JAGADEESH on May 01, 2010 10:51 AM

India is failing its rural poor with 230 million people being undernourished — the highest for any country in the world. Malnutrition accounts for nearly 50% of child deaths in India as every third adult (aged 15-49 years) is reported to be thin (BMI less than 18.5).

India ranks 94th in the Global Hunger Index of 119 countries, the report said.

Brought out by the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), the report points to some staggering figures. More than 27% of the world's undernourished population lives in India while 43% of children (under 5 years) in the country are underweight. The figure is among the highest in the world and is much higher than the global average of 25% and also higher than sub-Saharan Africa's figure of 28%.

More than 70% of children (under-5) suffer from anaemia and 80% of them don't get vitamin supplements. According to the report, the proportion of anaemic children has actually increased by 6% in the past six years with 11 out of 19 states having more than 80% of its children suffering from anaemia.

Percentage of women with chronic energy deficiency is stagnant at 40% over six years with the proportion in fact increasing in Assam, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Haryana during the same period.

who is responsible
by Prabagar Balakrishnan on Apr 21, 2010 09:57 AM  | Hide replies

It seems from the photo for more poor people only the poor and government is responsible. Four children and one woman, if it is all her child, she must be punished severely to have so many child when she herself on the road. whom to blame here, government or her and her husband. I think both, for not educating the people about sexual protection and the ignorance of the couple who have more children than their financial capability.

Before you blame a poor woman for having so many children, take a look at the dominating males in her househod who married her off in her early teens and forced her to produce children. Child marriage is a reality in India, ad unless this practice is stopped India will continue to suffer from poverty and hunger.

Politicians r wealthiest in India & their many to tak
by prem menon on Apr 06, 2010 10:40 AM

In India wealthiest are Politicians, burocrates, government employees. So if their families assets are seized and nationalised all will become nation property. even the private sector is benami of politicians, burocrates. Formers are dieing every day by suicides. farmers are debt trapped, either go for extremism or suicide. Hence the better route to restore economic peace better each politician family to be audited and assessed how much ill gotten wealth by the present chartered accountants and nationalise without any hesitation. for instance Andhra Pradesh each Minister for instance Botsa sayanarayana taken away the lake and put up engineering college, similarly opposite collector office at vijayanagaram 2 acres document were created on his relative, amassed most of the lands on his family name.s Dharmana Prasada Rao another minister taken away the governament & temple lands for his commercial purpose similarly many lands were on his relatives names, Vatti Vastha Kumar occupied all poromboke land and created documents on his relatives and on his names.. similarly all ministers including CM all MLA's are looting and farmers are suiciding. Karunanidhi & his family owns total tamilnadu that much wealth amassed, similarly Mayawathi all people starved deaths, she is looting and puting monumnets on dalit leaders 6000 crores spent, she want to spend another 60000 crores. no end of these sagas, so politicians & burocrates assets to be natio
