Biggest problem
by Ram Sharma on Mar 28, 2010 12:12 PM  | Hide replies

Our population has trippled from 33 cr in 1947 (combined population of India, Paki & B'desh) to 110 cr in India alone. Still it is increasing @1.6% against world average of 1.2% and 0.6% in China. Whereas our land area has not increased. But no leader is bothered. Foolish religious leaders also want people of their respective religion to hv more children. Many Muslims don't follow family planning on this account and become poor as well, in addition to increasing population. Though I've also seen some poor Hindus also having many children.

Increased population not only increases poverty, it also increases global warming, pollution, forest depletion etc.

We must follow Chinese example of one child norm, in force there since 1979. But will our highly corrupt politicians do so, as it requires lot of will power and public faith in them?

Another main reason of price increase is the collution between politicians and businessmen.

by Romesh on Mar 28, 2010 09:51 AM

Congress has ruled this country for over 45 years post independence Cong.
Given an opportunity we have divided opposition interested only in their personal agenda than national agenda. BJP in Karnataka is the standing example. Most corrupt Govt we have ever seen. SEXy CM !! and what not !
Given the opportunity, they behave this way !

Lakhs together tons of food grains are rotting at Govt Godowns and Trillions of ill gotton wealth of this country is slashed into Swiss Accounts.
Politics is in the wrong hands ... criminals and goons !
This is Kaliyoug and things can't improve and have to deteriorate.

Another statistic?
by shiva on Mar 28, 2010 09:28 AM

Good that this item is bouncing back! We are privileged compared to most who have limited scope to get out of their miserable life, no matter how hard they try. I always think about the little child who was breaking stones in the hot sun. When asked how much he is paid, he hardly looked up - kuch nahi! Ha may still be doing it & even joined by others much younger! That always gives me a reality check to thank my position in life & eschew envy & do my bit for others. If food is little delayed or not upto taste, we take it on our mother as if it is our birthright. Of course, after our parents get rid of us, we get reality checks & accept all as fact of life!

Hunger is vicious & keeps coming back every few hours! That so many have to suffer without hope is a blot on our existence. That also places those who persist in lifting them up on a high pedestal! It is easy writing a check but to spend time with them is another.

We are all guilty that we look away. We can do more! Hunger does not differentiate anyone by caste, creed, religion etc. The most cruel is for a child who have to bear it! When some are feted, others are ignored & the mother's pain is indescribable that can lead to suicide.

The solution is not easy but we should do all we can. But most feel we are entitled to mindless filmy tamashas, IPL etc from the reel world. The real world is ignored!

We need to set our priorities right
by Nikhil Shah on Mar 28, 2010 04:27 AM

The policy makers and planners have to take a few risks. Poverty, malnutrition, child labor and illiteracy take higher priority than urban infrastructure, inflation and corruption. The planners have to pump more cash into rural projects and not wait for the trickle down effect to happen.

There will always be corruption but that is not the problem because unless any effort is made to uplift the poor nothing will change. The priorities are:

1. All 387 million children should have education
2. All 660,000 villages should have a library center
Satelite TV, windmill and solar power and internet.
3. Children with Mid-day meals, uniforms and books

They can pump huge sums of money to the rural infrastructure that way they can uplift them and give them a jump start. Already India has about 600 million mobile phones and 130 million TV sets with the growth we have seen in 2000-2010.

The amount invested in Rural areas is small compared to the money floating in the economy so inflation or even corruption is not an issue.

Who can cause change ?
by manoj kumar on Mar 28, 2010 03:30 AM

Still we live in illusion that neta, govt are gonna solve the problem of poverty. Truth is they are impotent. they are obstacle in the path of growth. they can give tall bhashan to appeal tp people. Keep them dreaming in illusion. Argument, blame, talks all these are weapon. they use to continue their power, vote bank. There is not enough mature people who can draw people's attention on real solution. In this open market world economy. Jobs and income are created by small business, shops, private offices etc. People see this happening in mumbai, delhi. yet most population of india particularly living in rural areas are hoping govt to solve their problem.

Let these 300 million people die of hunger. That will improve our per capita GDP.We can build more malls in the meantime, make millions working in call centers and buy substandard houses in slumbai for a few crores.

What else can you expect????
by swapnadip on Mar 28, 2010 12:56 AM

When Mrs Nita Ambani, wife of one of Top 5 billionaires in world, Mr Mukesh Ambani is hawking for donations with an Yellow coloured 'Education India' board in the MUMBAI INDIANS' stand in IPL then WHAT ELSE IS EXPECTED??

It has often become a fashion or trend for 'FILTHY RICH HOUSEWIVES' to pose by those underprivileged children and show how loving and generous they are!!!!

Tata's on the other side have given a whole airline company (which was considered world's luxurious at that time) to building whole well planned cities like Tatanagar, Jamshedpur, etc, they given steel at proper price for growing India, Trucks which almost transport all of India's goods, feeding millions of people either by daily wages or hefty cheques, and the list goes on...... Still you never see Ratan Tata doing a 'SHOWOFF CHARITY'

Therefore I ask an question. Are Ambani's and Mittal's and people like Naresh Goyal,
Azim Premji, Dilip Shanghvi really making Indians Proud despite being top 10 richest people in India????

Now, the day we people will find the answer, our problem will get solved and that figure 300 million will come to 0.
