Unfortunately India is not going to get a rupee symbol it really deserved. The symbol that has been accepted by the Government is not very appealing and seems very ordinary and in no way comes out as very outstanding. Even the symbols submitted by the other four finalists are also very much disappointing. In fact, I too had sent entries for the contest, but at hindsight find them not up to the mark.
The very contest was not very imaginatively conceived and got bogged down in constricted bureaucratic mediocrity. Hence, it failed to evoke much needed fierce and vigorous response from the talent across the country. In the first instance it was not widely and exhaustively publicized. The contest should not have been directed towards selecting one rigid symbol developed by one individual but towards evolving one with further modifications suggested to the finally short listed ones with maximum participation from the talented and the professionals all over India. The focus should not have been on somebody getting a prize; nevertheless, those constructively participated could have been adequately rewarded. Certain conditions set with respect to the technicalities of the design should have gone as guidelines only, leaving scope for flexibility and pre-final modifications if need be.
