Vedanta issue: A few disturbing questions
by raman govindan on Aug 26, 2010 10:22 AM  | Hide replies

it may result that none will venture into a new major project in aluminium, copper, iron & steel, power, port, airports and major industries in any part of india.

the Govt. of India may have to give sovereign assurance and clearance to the undertaking that wants to invest in such industries and back it up from the initial survey, to the completion of project and to the marketing of products and logistics and insure against loss for any reversal of decision and impediment to the execution and the profitability.

that will not be advocated and the development will attenuate.

It rains in People's Republic of China.

China has got many efficient leaders, technocrats in primary, secondary and tertiary levels to plan and execute jobs, including their boss Hu,here we have to search performers barring Chidambaram two or three, hence the problem. Many things are going above the head of Politicians holding power.

Indian growth
by ASA C on Aug 26, 2010 10:17 AM  | Hide replies

As the write up says, we cannot keep tribals as like this. They are not cattles but humanbeing. It is shame for India that we have not developed such people till now.
Govt. should ask Industry to do the needful thus environment is not affected which is the right solution without stopping economic growth. If not follwed action can be taken.
Having said the above, I have seen in Barbil where many mining activities are going on, Orissa govt has not made roads in the city. Performance of Govt is so poor, do not know what the IAS officers are doing. The efficiency of Govt is the main issue and that is the reason the slow Indian growth.
Ahead is not bright as the UPA 2 is not doing the job well. There is lack of knowledge in UPA and MMS and pranab are not project people thus the problem.

U r right. Those people r againting to this project. The should come to visit to meet Barbil tribal people and ask them for stop mining and wait for answer. Definite they never will agree because they are getting thousands and thousands money directly or indirectly through mining.

Will this be same if it was Reliance ???
by Ashish Kumar on Aug 26, 2010 10:07 AM

I would doubt that there is only environmental issues which is being considered . I would also doubt that the decision would have been the same if it had been Reliance industries in the middle of the same concern .

Roots of Naxalism
by Brijesh Pant on Aug 26, 2010 09:57 AM  | Hide replies

The roots of naxalism which has shattered the govt. machinery in these areas has roots to attrocoties over tribals like this only.
There is no use of using forces or making debates on making a peaceful settlement with naxalites till we go on looting their ancestral lands and ruining their lives.
Going to cities for making a livlihood is only means to live a respectful life or even just to survive is the only option remaining against the tribals. No agriculture sustainance. No preservance of ancesral lands and culture. No livelihood and education at their own hands. What else will they do?
This is not what is meant by 'welfare state' as the the preamble of constitution defines INDIA of 'we the people'.
Finaaly even if they go and settle in some sig cities they have to face 'LOCAL NAVNIRMAN SENA'.

Good to see that every one is acting in its own way, but as a responsible person for making a developed nation we need to chalk out a balanced plan where peoples rights are protected as well as nation also builds.

Does it hurt YOUR pride that a tribal wearing nose-rings, etc. can speak English? It entirely because of this kind of attitude that the country has so many statutes for reservations. We should be proud that even in these times of greed for "development" (and development for whom at whose expense is the mute question here) that a Minister has the guts to take such a decision. You should visit the site and see for yourself the damage that such mining activities has caused and then pass judgement. I live in Meghalaya and you should see what the Lafarge JV estd. in Bangladesh is doing to the limestone rich land in our border area. The Supreme Court's order to stop the mining activities have been simply ignored just because they had already sunk in large investments. Who do you think will suffer after all the limestone is finished? And how did Lafarge even bet a toehold in the area in the first place? I can bet my last rupee that some people made a stash when fraudulent clearances were given.

some control is okay, but u cant help it.
by manoj sharma on Aug 26, 2010 09:48 AM

Private company dont run on air. one side we keep dreaming of growth, job cration and wealth creation for nation. and other side unionbaazi for everything. it does not work. if privare and MNCs run away, india will continue to be jungle me mangal. and 3rd world.
i do agree some control, but eventually we have no choice but to use whatever natural resouces we have till we have developed world class green technology and no more dependent on mining like america and many rich country are now moving to green projects. we are far behind, we have no choice right now.

First it was Church of England who opposed this project of Vedanta in Orissa. Now, it is the MoEF. I see some unholy alliance between the two.
