Oh please, lets face it Vedanta has been trying left right centre to get a foothold in India by hook or crook. It hasnt worked so why are we all so upset anout one company being given the boot? Why aren't the people who dodnt want Vedanta on their land being listened to? Point is no matter what Senior fellow says or whether he gets his millions propogating about Vedanta it isnt going to change the fact what Vedanta did.

and corruption.
Lastly the abduction of the tribal’s and their torture in police custody probably has been forgotten by the author. Have some heart . People with money and corrupt political party in the state will violate all possible laws which is why today the state is in complete disarray. Kudos to the MEOF wish they act against all environmentally hazardous projects the same way. That will be true development.

It is disturbing to see that Vedanta's media clout and reach is not only in the state of Orissa, but it is also able to influence Institutes, Media and retired officers to write in favour of them. Secondly I must say that the article is a clinical massacre of human rights and has been written by someone who really does not want to see the growth of Orissa and neither has he visited the site nor has he bothered to read the Saxena report in detail.
The Supreme Court in its order had never said that Vedanta/OMC is allowed mining rights; instead it had clearly said that the MEOF has to give its final approval and the company till then will not undertake any construction works at the site. Instead the company flouted laws went on to construct the refinery which, has nearly 25 hects of forest land inside its plant area.
Instead what it tried to do was to bulldoze its way thru with the help of the state government and its officials (which the saxena report has been defined as agents of the company) backing it fully and creating a situation of fait accompli which means as the large investment has been done therefore there is no other option but to put the pressure on the centre and the MEOF to grant clearances. Infact Vedanta has done so in all its projects in India and across the world. This senior fellow who has written the article has not shared facts with the readers and seems to be part of corrupt state Government of Orissa – which tops the Index of poverty and

Many Disturbing Truths
by Krittika Behera on Aug 26, 2010 04:56 PM  | Hide replies

Firstly kudos to Mr Mohanty for providing a rarther lengthy but absolute armchair view of the Vedanta case. Surely you have'nt gone to the site. How do you as a senior fellow of Industrial Development justify complete destruction of a sound ecological zone and it's people for a foreign company knowing it will take only four years to completely denude the area of everything including bauxite? What then? What do you or your institute or Vedanta propose to do? Kill more hectares of area?
Most importantly this article clearly comes across as a paid report by Vedanta and the State Government. How can you call the bureaucrats hapless when they have been colluding with Vedanta from the very beginning. No one is against development but definitely not at the cost of destroying the very life and livelihoods of Tribals who will not even get anything in the deal.
Let's face reality, Vedanta flouted laws, and the SC judgement is being misinterpreted by you, as is the Stage 1 clearance. Vedanta only survived with the big bucks and the unhealthy support of the state government. More than fighting for a company which is out to strip the state of millions of tonnes of ore, the state givernment should rather fight to uphold the rights of its indegenous people.
Perhaps a senior fellow of a human rights and forest institute should write to educate you of the other side.
The Saxena report is a blessing for the environment and the people of Niyamgiri.

Kritttika Behera,
What indigenous people are you talking to off. I run a factory here in Tamilnadu and see thousands of Orissa lads coming to here everyday to get some sort of work. They are willing to toil even for Rs 100 per day. There is such abject poverty in your state that they have to go begging to other states for livelihood. Is it Human rights?
I presume you live in a good house, have a car and ac. All these needs steel and aluminium and will only some from mining. Bauxite is not found everywhere: it is found only in some places. So proper sense is to relocate the tribals and then start the mining. But you guys want Orissa to remain backward... what to do? Mind you Vedanta has promised 60,000 jobs for orissa youth. I have travelled across many factories in orissa and all of them use Orissa labour and staff. The allegation that they dont use local people is also just false news.

Mr Shubasrikrishna, you have said it yourself. "There is abject poverty in my state" The same government has been ruling for the last 11 years and not done anything for grassroots development and people like you staying in other states think a foreign company doing illegality is teh cure to all the poverty. Please visit and know the truth. Vedanta has NOT promised all 60,000 jobs to the Tribals. Only about 200 that too as sweepers, drivers and labour. Is that the development you want for my people?
And for your kind information, I am a tribal who studied hard to do some good for my people.

Niyamgiri Mining
by simanchal acharjya on Aug 26, 2010 10:39 AM  | Hide replies

It is very unfortunate that due to some political reason adverse remarks have been passed against the niyamgiri mining by the MoEF.It debars the golden opportunity for a poor state like orissa to progress towards modernity. if this measure is followed i presume none of the existing mining in India will qualify for the norms set down by MoEF. it gives wrong signal to industry in general. When initially the clearance was given in 2007 why again separate committee was constituted in 2010? It seems the MoEF is hell bound to put spoke in the progress of Orissa by denyng the mining rights so that the Vedant project could not become economically viable. Even though the orissa state is rich in various minerals the state is not getting ample opportunity for its optimum benefit. Under this context the decision of denying the permission by Env ministry is biased towards the non congress state govt. We are missing a golden opportunity for wholesome development of the kalahandi dist which is suffering from abject proverty. This devoids lakhs of people of this reason for a better life. An optimum balance to be maintained between the environment and development. The env ministry should not become so methodical so that no project can come in any part of india as any industry will have some adverse impact on the environment at the benefit of development of society. If the ministry is bend upon denying the mining right they should suitably compensate the state govt for the accrued benefits

If they heirtely think and compare with our enmies country. They definitely take it alternate way to controll of environment proposanally industrilisation.

Tribal people need to live like a animal in Jungle
by Krushna Sahu on Aug 26, 2010 10:38 AM

Actually NGO people want the people of trible should stay in Jungle like a wild animal with out education or any development, if they will develop who will give them money for dev of tribal. For ex- NGOs r taking money Rs100 for dev work of tribal people and spending Rs10. Rest r distributing among some people.Hence some people don't want industries. If mineral excavation is happening only in mineral zone not whole the Hill area.

Political and personal agenda more important than nation
by Priyadarshi Tripathy on Aug 26, 2010 10:26 AM

Mr. Jairam with his Ray ban on has pronounced his judgement megalomaiacally to kill two birds in one stone. First to furter Congress agenda, sadly this is going to damage Congress more than the BJD,secondly to fatten up the already fat NGOs whose hearth keep burning when the tribals live in perpetual penury and in medieval living conditions. They will then put arms on their shoulders and adorn the front page of coffee table books.Such self serving individuals and organizations are the cancer tumors that India needs to operate and throw in the Bay of Bengal
