IITs should become self independent, just like BITS-Pilani is. BITS runs it's own Distance Learning and Work Integrated Programs for industries, from where it generates it's revenues. No money is taken from the Govt/Birla's and yet, the college is ranked above several IITs every year. (7,6,5,5 this year by India Today, Outlook, EFY and Mint (HT)) They should learn from this, and become self independent. They have all the right to set their own salaries then. They can't make other colleges (like NITs, Central Universities) more poor, by asking for $80000 salaries per year. That's completely unethical.

Yeah, a *self-independent* IIT would be such a unique thing in the world. All other educational institutions can only hope to become *self-dependent* at best.
There is a slight mistake in your heading, though. Should have been: "IITs need to become self unreliant", for the sake of consistency.

Haha! My mistake. Wrote that in a hurry! Well let's correct it then:

the problem in india is that every mr. x and mr. y and mr. z starts talking about the nits and iits as if they knew everything about them :-)
Your staement is comendable. I am from one of the IITS. in the department I studied only 3 or 4 faculties out of some 25 faculties were up to the standard. 50 percent were utter crap. The 3 year assesment period is a very good idea. Good work minister

May be you are a loser who does not understand science, and gets an orgasm just looking at some equations. You have failed to evaluate the subjects, because you failed to even understand what science is. Also, the faculty at IIT are behaving like Mill workers, they get paid much higher (as per Purchasing Power parity) compared to faculty at US and UK. Their overall pay is higher than a lecturer in Germany of France.

This country does not require any scientists, engineers and for that matter any kind of professionals. The whole arrangement has a clear and blatant bias in favour of IAS officers for the reasons understood by politicians only. The country is forced to bag and buy technology from abroad for any damn silly thing for the simple reason that professionals have no respectable place in government set up or in thought. Indians have failed to learn one such simple thing from Germans, Americans, Japanese or even Britishers. Afterall Indians can't discard their slave mentality inherited from generations.

In US faculty has to get grant and work from industry constantly, and that is why their salaries are higher. That reality has to be looked into seriously, for building bridges with industry efforts.

But a nurse and Professor in America earns the same amount of salary while a professor earns 10x more salary than a nurse in India
Pay can only go up with higher meaningful, research and development projects from Industry and teachers who can go back-n-forth between academia and industry. Salary cannot be increased by govt sponsored tax payers money. It can only go higher with industry participation.

If they feel they want more MONEY let them fetch a job which pays them better...Teachers who value MONEY than sharing knowledge is dangerous to a country where many look at IIT faculties with a respect...Shame on professors...

Why shame on professors you moron? Aren't they human beings with financial responsibilites on them? Do you know their knowledge level? Shouldn't they be compensated for what they are doing for the country?

You are right. What about you?? Why don't you set an example. Go toil for 30 years and work for a salary which you can get even after passing class X and work in a call center.
