And equally important, control population. As it is there is news that elephant and leopards coming into towns. They don't come into towns, but humans and towns went into their neighbourhoods. We have to control population and this was pointed out by the late J.R.D. Tata when India attained independence. We were 450 million in 1947 and within 60 years we crossed a billion. At this rate there wouldn't be any greencover for the next generation. No flora or fauna and soon we will face the music.

by Alice Janho on Nov 07, 2009 01:24 AM  | Hide replies

No Use adding cities,go to navimumbai it has water with oil slick, instead India needs population control incentives and outsourcing of all ministries, contracts to foreigners for power water ,infrastructure and ban on criminal politicians ,only educated politicians should hold govt offices and democracy has to go or strict laws like singapore has to come .Adding more cities will make more slums more reservation, more problems.

Water will be avaialble as there is no high population densities.
When local economy grows money will come and so the infrastructure will improve.
Why always blame Politicians

Supply & Demand
by Drona Bhatnagar on Nov 07, 2009 01:15 AM

The same basic principal works here , limited resources and exponential demands and coupled with corruption, takes this to the extreme.

But the idea is good for near future but not for distant future !!
India needs to figure out its short-term & long-term goals and prioritize them accordigly !

Population control anyone?
by SaneIndian on Nov 07, 2009 12:52 AM  | Hide replies

India is adding 2 crore people to its population every year. So no matter how many new cities you build, they will not be enough.

A strict population control policy should be enforced and forced family planning operations need to be performed on beggers and homeless people on the streets.

We are already 109 crores and the population is growing fast. We are all set to overtake China in the next 10years as the world's most populus country.

There will be more and more Dharavis in the future. The name Slumdog will be used as a synonym for all Indians 10yrs from now.

The problem with India is that too many people have their voice and say in everything and all the projects get cancelled because some a-hole did not like the project.

India will never improve unless some strict actions are taken. Government should implement all its policies with IRON FIST.

This is 80s thinking. We know now that the young growing population of India is an asset rather a liability. When there are more people they will go out to opther parts of world (Europe, America) and can be a bridge to India for global competitiveness. So population growth has to managed strategically NOT controlled.

Having well planned new cities will take care f a lot of these problems... the existing cities are all centuries old... it is very difficult to improve the infrastructure there..

Good response
by Mandeep Ghuman on Nov 07, 2009 12:33 AM  | Hide replies

This article is one of the few on Rediff which, in my view, have generated insightful (even though a bit angry) replies. A good break from communal and polarized replies.
Mr. Prahalad was either day dreaming when he talked about 500 new cities or he is hand-in-glove with Indian politicians (who just want to spur lucrative business contracts and hence create opportunities to make money for themselves). When such gurus make recommendations, the politicians get a nice smoke screen to advance their malicious agendas.
As some readers pointed out, if anything, India needs to improve its villages and small towns. But the level of chaos is so high in that country that it seems unlikely things will ever change for its disenfranchised masses. Good luck India.

I totally agree with this concept. U need infrstructure and mind set of people to grow. China is doing this buidling city at war footing. thats why they are growing like crazy. They atract 30 billion dollar a year. WE get only 3 bill $ a year as foreing investment. Its hight time we wake up, be bold and tighten our bold. u cant build new india based on old theory.

City is a flawed concept
by Vijay Natrajan on Nov 07, 2009 12:27 AM  | Hide replies

"The City" is the English man's making. In India or for that matter in much of the world we never had the concept of a City. The City is for rats! Real Humans live in villages and small towns which are sustainable and eco-friendly units of habitat.

Let's compare a Housing in the City with that of habitat in a Village-

City dweller needs at least 20-50 lakhs to build a house. The house is extremely expensive and takes up lots of resources - cement - which needs a big polluting cement plant somewhere, lots of steel which needs a big steel plant somewhere with even bigger (and polluting) iron ore mine somewhere...and not to mention all the trains and trucks to transport it all...getting my point? Everything in a city needs something bigger, more polluting and unsustainable to create.

Compare this to a house in a village...it made up of simple raw materials...mud, wood and straw locally available...all eco-friendly and bio degradable...cost is very very less and easily affordable...minus the cement factories, steel plants, power plants, roads and all the vehicles needed to transport.

Analyze anything and everything that you find in a city and you will find a chain of things...expensive, polluting, degrading and unsustainable linked to it.

We city fools think that village life is downgrade and something to be ashamed of...but there is no better way of life...its the most scientific and sophisticated way of life...totally sustainable and eco friendly.

WHO NEEDS 500 CITIES?

The percapita expense for a village life is less compared to city. The idea of making cities all over India is a crazy idea. First of all we need to define village and city, then count the amenities required. The thought of Mr. Vijay is noble and people friendly. Concrete jungle is a danger to Mother Earth.
