India needs to build 500 new cities
by anand on Nov 06, 2009 09:38 PM

500 cities?...

Sure..

In fact, India will be divided into 500 countries soon..thanks to our great politicians who run vandalizm groups like MNS/ShivSena/SriRamSene etc...

They will give birth to separate countries, not cities..and the birth will not be by BUILDING, but by BREAKING the country in the name of religion, language etc...

It wouldn't work here
by Faneendra Kumar on Nov 06, 2009 09:36 PM

It wouldn't work here in India. The politicians will love to have this idea as they have more chances of siphoning the funds allocated.

India needs roads and traffic control and cleanliness
by Mandeep Ghuman on Nov 06, 2009 09:27 PM

How can urban conditions in India be improved? What really afflicts the urban areas? In my view, it is the traffic (with associated dust) and the poorly paved and badly maintained roads and sidewalks(which are the source of those dust clouds in Indian cities). Contrary to Mr. Prahalad's views, I think India, for now, can do without modern Western-style cities (characterized by strict zoning laws). Mere traffic law enforcement and roads quality will make India's urban areas livable (vastly). And there is this question to be asked. If Indian authorities dont have the will and the incentive to improve the current condition of roads infrastructure, how will they gather the same for building new cities? Even if politicians want to participate in building of new cities (for kickbacks and other gains), who will maintain those new cities? Mr. Prahalad, please dont see India in the image of the West. We have to keep in mind, India's basic problem is the level of human development, not the state of its urban infrastructure.

India needs to upgrade 500 existing villages into 500 new cities.
by Vishnu Sharma on Nov 06, 2009 09:21 PM  | Hide replies

That way we will not waste resources and also cause a lot of people from cities who came from these villages to migrate back to them.

We need to have well planed and neat cities with a proper format and apply that template
everywhere.

The NATIONAL DEMOCRATIC WORKERS PARTY city planning ministry, has planned out these templates for India's future cities and use for our inspiration the towns of Nordlingen, Hallstatt and Graubnden
(You can do a google image search on these and see these for yourselves)

Infact we have laid out the complete plans of changing Nainital into another Hallstat with
a funicular tram providing access to various levels on the mountain face.
Nainital look ugly with a lot of clutter today.
We will change all of that.

We need to convert 500 of our villages into these new cities. Link them with excellent and clean roads, Bring all the basic amenities to these villages and make them picturesque little havens using green technologies. Houses with Redtiled sloping roofs, A Temple, Mosque and Church for every one of these village-cities.

A couple of Good Hospital, Post offices, Internet Cafes, Agricultural institutes,
Schools, Colleges which offer vocational training in maintenance operations.

Business areas and shops must be separate from neighborhoods with houses in these cities.

We really need to clear out the slums and over crowding in our major cities in this manner.

Temple Mosque Churches et al should not be government owned or managed.
Government can provide the necessary infrastructure like roads/railways etc.
Slums will not be cleared out just by upgrading the villages.
Existing city municipal organizations have to be decentralized with localized municipalities and elections to the same.
will give local citizens more power and control and quality of life will improve accordingly

Not cities but developed villages
by abboral boral on Nov 06, 2009 09:20 PM

This is worst idea by management guru .We need 50000 thousands developed villages with all the facilities .Development of 600 cities means all urban people only stay where as actual villagers will remain poor .We need rural India development not city development because demand will be created in village development only

We need a Military Dictator or British Rule to realize your dream
by Praveen Goud on Nov 06, 2009 09:17 PM

Our leaders are vision less and the only vision they have is to stay in power by divide and rule tactics learnt from britishers. We are good in secularism or adapting to diversity by propaganda rather than reality. To realize your Bottom of the Pyramid theory, we need world class and quality education coupled with equal opportunities irrespective of region, gender, religion or caste which our political leaders are denying it to indians.

As you said corrupt nations do not develop human capital, but India is the most corrupt nation which can develop slaves rather than generating human capital with imagination and aspiration. To revamp the corrupted and collapsed civil institutions namely political system, Indian Judiciary, and their bureaucracy we need either Military Dictator or British Rule once again to give world class education to all indians to choose the leaders with vision who understands your concept to make india as a global innovative center. Our leaders and fundamentalists know, if all indians are given quality education, their livelihood through exploitation will be finished.

Your dream of training indians to match global standards, professional ethics and compensated properly will be far from reality if we dont have transparent policies , regulations and auditing coupled with protection of employees to question employers when those are denied to them.

Your 500 cities concept is good to prevent mass migration and scarcity of resources at one place.

Dude don't be a victim of Balkanisation principles,it will simply rip off the country,we have already a lot of Jihadis to deal with apart from our idiot leaders.
We need to stay united and be in the way of total progress for the entire masses rather than for selected few and for that there needs to be more cities rather than everything being concentrated to bangalore, gurgaon and all

Most 'thinkers' seem to miss the core point.

Earlier they said, India's main problem is it over-population.

After the start of IT boom, as Indian brain power is sought after world over, now they see a way to capitalize on the population, by exporting brain power.

They forget one thing: In any era, over population is a cancer.

Unless India does something very drastically to curtail population growth, we will soon be facing dire consequences.

And, of all population control measures known to us, the best one is: MASS EDUCATION.

It is a proven fact that when people get educated, the population automatically comes
down.

By education we don't mean a college level education.

A simple, high school diploma for majority of the population will do a lot good to the country, than spending millions in educating a few IIT-ians.

Educating the masses addresses all other social maladies: Religious fanaticism, Casteism, Alcoholism, Abusement of women and children, Child labor, corruption, etc.

Mass Education promotes scientific temper and social responsibility. And hence quality of
life.

Building new cities will not improve the quality of life. It will only help relocate a section of the already urban population, and create wealth for the already wealthy.

All cities in the developed world were not newly built. They were all re-built, over and over again, by educated people.

So, the solution for India: Mass Education.

Everything else, is just cosmeti

India needs 500 new cities.
by Harsh Mehta on Nov 06, 2009 08:55 PM

In All along the world 15 percent old houses are rebuilt.Taking example of mumbai here building however old used till one day it collappse.New laws like structal audit etc. are made.Enegy efficient bldgs with rain havesting using solar enegy, water recyclig, compact sewage treatment etc. cannot be made in old buidings.Taking clue from China,India should rebuilt old buildings and constructing multistoreyed blds. with higher FSI on one side of road only and use it for road widening and rain harvesting.Surplus flats after accoommodating familes could be sold to partly finance the scheme.Typical standard designs can be prepared and can be given across the counterexisting infrastructure with minor change can be fully utilsed
