It can be easily seen that average indian students outperform americans academically. Also i would like to say that average indian is very hard working.

Because American student do 10 different things apart from studies, and also work to PAY for his education himself, not on his baaap money.

On the contrary Indian belongs to the worst of the worst third world, a country with per capita income ranked below 160th number in the world. If he will not work hard, then will have to do zhadu pocha, not that it is bad, but in a hierarchical and status oriented country like India, doing small work makes you demonized by the society, while in USA even a sweeper can live a dignified life.

Why do you think India is such a dirty shabby place literally a shitland, answer is lack of dignity of labour.

For starters, it is cheeky of rediff to pick the cheapest and eye catching line of the whole interview (nevermind, these questions - and all dumb questions posed by ill prepared reporter )were asked of the high and mighty of the corp world since 1990.

But disturbing to see how the so called intelligentia of our higher education system thinks (assuming she had meant what she expressed and ignoring her initial comments on womens lib etc - yawn).

It is an extreme case of trivilzation of two diagonally opposite education systems with myriad of other differences. American education system is built on developing a child's intuition. Their system prods your child to THINK as against our system of education which stresses on by-heart, memorize and spill (inherited from age old practice of gurukuls). Adding and subtracting without the need of a calculator does not make us smart. If we are so good at math, then by now we could have gotten some nobel prizes ( nominations atleast) by now. I know there are some extrem dumbs out there who argue that nobel prize is not a yard stick of one's prowess of math but I would simply rest my case in face of such creatures (It is like you get patriotic and invent Bharat I and II emissions standards simply because you dislike EURO I and II).

At best what she said about an 'average' student is shallow. Unless she thinks an average student is an average IITian (but then an average american student out to be one from MIT , Cornell or UCLA).

difference between scholastic performance and real-time intell---
by srijithesh rajendran on Nov 03, 2009 06:39 PM  | Hide replies

there is difference between academic brillance in primary or secondary schooling and excellance in innovation in real-time research and development. the statement that our average students outperforms american brillant ones is just meaningless statement without any kind of insight into the nature of scientific or cultural progress. Pity that such a person is head of a management school. This indeed the reflection of indian standards!

Mug Mug Mug - Yes...thats right!...Thats the success mantra for students in the Indian Education System.. I got over my 7th semester BE exams in 1998 and i realised one thing - I have just mugged my way through..!....Ask any person abt the working of any method and you get this standard reply - "Why u bother?....Jus mug and vomit in the exam!".....The more you replicate the text book content in your answer sheet, the more you get marks!......and thats true!.....Even in case of subjects like Mathematics.....the usual questions come from various parts of the text book (mostly solved questions).....Mug up the entire text book and you are done!....Practical subjects like programming can also be handled in the "mug" way....Usual programming questions also come from textbooks...(It is very difficult for the question paper setter to write his own question and form the answer)....Study those textbooks.....memorize them and you are done!.......

This is the case with the declaration that We are shining or We are a super power. People do not even know the criteria to be met to be called a super power. Again this talk of being a "developed country". If we have character, if we work hard and are honest, I would say we are a great society. That is what our society should aspire to become. ankly, in this end, I am somewhat cynical when I read reports of a Chief Justice grabbing lands to be tune of 200 Acres; Where are we going?
And to rub slat on the injury,we have these kind of psuedo Intellectuals who claim that Average Indian is better than the best everywhere.

Indians are the brainiest people anywhere
by Vivek Dev on Nov 03, 2009 06:30 PM  | Hide replies

So we are the brainiest people anywhere. No wonder we are at the bottom of the heap in HDI, no wonder we have been slaves to all conquerors, no wonder we turn out the best engineers, doctors, etc what have you. And no wonder we are still clueless about whether EVMs can be tampered with or not. And no wonder everything we use from the commode to the condom is the product of western science and technology. Pathetic - Indians cant think beyond grades and marks.

This kind of bombastic statements that average better than th ebest eveywhere is making me sick. Frankly, I Either we are defeatist to lament or bombastic to claim everything. This shows our EQ has not been on par with IQ.

Please leave these kind fo exaggerated statement sot our friends on the north qwest of our border-Pakistanis, who tell their children that one pakistani is equal to five Indians.

Its begining of new era
by suresh yadav on Nov 03, 2009 06:24 PM

It is true that talented people has been leaving India for better places like America due to lack of research focus in India. Focus of IITs has changed now(since last 3 years), Most of IITs are now research focused which is helping in creating better environment for research work. Research does not provide result in early stage, so be patient with new policy of IITs. Remember "Rome was not built in a day". Now More number of brilliant students are sticking with IITs now than never before. So I am sure things will change.

Average Indian more Brilliant than Brilliant American
by Sadanand Prasadi on Nov 03, 2009 06:22 PM  | Hide replies

Probably it says some thign about our old style of teaching and learning and making a child to remember storing the lessons in brain and not on a hard disk of a laptop. Also, the fight for merit in various exams makes student to study more.
Please somebody tell Mr Kapil Sibal , our education minister who wants to remove all exams.
Also, somebody should sedn a message to Maharashtra Govt. who r giving ATKT to 10th Std students who fail in board exams. If things continue this way, There is a possibility that student will have completed, BE,MBA, MBBS but has not yet cleared his 10th Std exam. God help the brilliant and hard-working student. Who shall in world beleive in ur degrees which are achieved without pasing secondary school exams.

by ContraView on Nov 03, 2009 06:18 PM  | Hide replies

It may be true that we are more intelligent than Americans & many other nationals. But the litmus test is:

a. Who is making more progress?

b. Where do innovations happen?

c. Who has given us corporate concepts such as Six Sigma & TQM?

d. Who is more disciplined?

e. Finally, who enjoys life more with proper work life balance?

Let me see if I can answer these questions.
a. Who is making more progress?
A: I heard China and India have highest GDP growth rate.

b. Where do innovations happen?
A: Inventions happen more in America and Europe but unrecognised innovation in second and third world countries. If u dont believe me ask any major product manufacturing company.
c. Who has given us corporate concepts such as Six Sigma & TQM?
A: America and Jappan but overall Japan Lead in Quality management
d. Who is more disciplined?
A: What is discipline? It depends on social relevance of behaviors. So can not be compared.

e. Finally, who enjoys life more with proper work life balance?
A: People in Bhutan (I am sure this answer is correct).

After all this I dont know what to infer so leaving this to all of u.

Thanks!! Some counter points:

a. US/ UK/ Japan etc., are in "cyclical downturn". Growth in India & China is because of western economies. One example in a larger context - US/ UK/ France had Metro Rails in early 1900, which we have NOW!!

d. Discipline - Few examples in case of India: Spitting on roads, Talking loudly, Troubling others, Bribing, Jumping queues, Breaking signals, Not following rules, etc.

e. I agree!! Bhutan scores the highest in the index of happiness in the world; But then, the current comparison is between India & US

Answer to ur reply above.

If product manufacturing is an innovation...then giving birth to a child is a new innovation by every woman who delivers a baby.

There is a difference between product manufacturing and concepting a product, pls come out of the shell and look the world around, how manufacturing works how products are designed, if these wetserner were not innovating then we wud still have been using cattle cart for transport...TATAs and everybnody else has just used the automobile technology to make cars they have not invented their own automobile innovations
