rediff is an expert to put these kind of titles and embarass the person who gave the interview. Anyway, she is wrong because even the most brilliant minds in india could not solve poverty or taken on the corrupted politicians

There is still poverty in america, but corruption will speak about the poor quality of education that is only to learn a trade.
Indians also outperform in dishonesty, cheating, taking short-cuts, outright meanness, back stabbing, nepotism, caste-quota-religion-bribery and so many otherthings!! East or west, India is definitely the best!!

after worldwar 2, americans had influx of skilled labourers, honest leadership, very fertile land with abundance of natural resources and besides, less population. Now you know why we still lag behind.
It isnt a good idea to compare students in such a random fashion..it looks like someone just said smthing and rediff quoted it :O. I heard Sjmsom is a great place, but i dont think anyone from there could pass comments like this..
What is an "average student" in a country with 70% illiteracy (India)? Definitely our best are at par with the best in the world, but that still does not take away from the fact that when it comes to patents, innovations, technology or Nobel Prizes Americans beat the rest of the world combined. Everything we associate with Modern technology, computers, software, internet, mobile devices, cars, planes, medicine, biotech has an overwhelming american component. It is OK to puff up once in a while, but we should not lose the perspective. Kaurvas had Krishna's entire army and Pandavas had only Krishna, yet Pandavas won. Americans continue to attract the best in the world and they have created a system in which the best thrive and prosper. Just the creation of such an eco-system means that no matter where the brightest are they will end up in US. And the rest of the world can take credit when these folks do great things. Like naturalized Indians, Germans, Russians or anybody else. Think about it? Who is really smarter?

Hi Sutapa, I am glad to see that this point has not been lost on people.
It's a tragedy, how enlightened people in our country make general statements like Mrs. Jain has.
The "average" American we see is indeed the average American, where when we say average Indian, we are referring to urban and literate Indians who constitute a miniscule fraction of our population!
The actual "average" Indian would consider himself lucky if he could write down his name.

We are no better or no worse. We are same as rest of the world.Walk in step with the world, be part of humanity. We are 1 billion there are 6 billion more out there.Odd of innovation happening there is 6:1.

Kalinga Putra, that would mean that we should be doing one seventh of the innovation here. BUt are we? We are not even doing one hundredth. That means we are not pulling our weight when it comes to innovation. While the US with 300 million people is pulling more than ten times its weight. We should at least be doing our fair share. Don't you think so.
Yes, Indians are brilliant, but so are Americans. We have to compare our 'brilliant students' with their 'brilliant students'. Else, how come almost all of the modern inventions have come from the western world. Why cant Indians contribute? I know that they have better infrastructure & better govt than us, but isnt that 'brilliant'?
The measure of quality of education, should be connected to the quality of life, of its citizens in terms of food, health, housing, sanitation, internet, security, sports, transportation, able to handle emergencies etc. can india compare us?

u r right. i have travelled to many countries, including other emerging countries, and found that sadly our country is the dirties, most corrupted & non disciplined. We dont want intelligent people, what we want is good quality of life, no poverty, education for all, food for all, healthcare for all, good road, water, good transportation, good airports, good police, good politicians and the list goes on & on.
