Rejoice...but dont get carried away...
by Rajesh Shetty on Feb 24, 2009 11:04 AM  | Hide replies

Lets all rejoice at an Indian having an Oscar. But let us not fool ourselves by thinking that Slumdog - the movie or songs, was the best piece of work that emerged from the last 100 yrs of Indian cinema. While from a western viewpoint, maybe so. But then what about our glorious past with the likes of Guru Dutt, Hrishikesh Mukerjee, Raj Kapoor, works like Mugle - Aazam, Aanand, Mother India, Pyaasa..and a long list of unforgettables. Cultural Awards dont really mean much at times. What matters is if people still remember the work after decades for its excellence ? Can Slumdog really pass that Indian test ???

What is the wrong with the slumdog !!!
by Vinu Mon on Feb 24, 2009 10:57 AM  | Hide replies

I saw the film and I know that area they shoot the film which is Bandra East in Mumbai.

The film shows the real pictures of that area only nothing is made in sets!! In fact the area is much worse than what it shown in the film. The entire Mumbai have still such areas.

If we feel shame on showing such real matters in the film, we should work to develop such places and remove the poverty and exploitation of the poor people.

We cant keep the things under the cover in this satelite era..

So dont blame Boyle, do something for the poor.

Right on brother! Well said...Why can't we accept the fact that we are a poor country with millions of poor people living in terrible conditions...So, what's wrong in showing the reality?

NOTHIN WRONG WITH SHOWING THE REALITY BUT TOP BEING PROUD OF A MOVIE WHICH IS SHOWING THE REALITY...

YOU THINK THESE WESTERN COUNTRIES HAVE NO ILL REALITIES OF THEIR OWN ???

THE MOVIE WAS NOT EVEN GOOD ...REMOVE THE AWARD AND THEN JUDGE...

THE MOVIE WAS AMATEUR...THERE ARE MUCH BETTER MOVIES THAN THIS...TRUST ME...

IT WAS NOT WORTH THE AWARD...

@AJ,

You are angry because you don't want people to see the real india. You want to deceive them by showing Karan Johar & co's glamorous lies on Indian life.

Accept the fact dear..the pain will be less...We are poor people and they are much much much superior than us in every aspect of life. You give me an example where we score higher..(Don't go back to our culture and all those stuffs)....They are superior people...accept it and try to learn from them...it's good for us ...

by Rahul on Feb 24, 2009 10:57 AM  | Hide replies

A R Rahman and Resul Pookutty, botth are muslims. I am happy that Indian muslims are bringing laurels to the country, proving wrong all the communal critics questioning the patriotic loyalty of Indian Muslims.

Dear Rahul. Many other Muslims have made India proud. I think APJ is really the first Indian. But cannot deny the fact that there is a big problem with a certain percentage of the community & in absolute numbers this percentage poses grave threat to the country.

Haan re! But he had yet not given a score to a film, which was nominated for an oscar. Rahman needs to work with oscar-winning directors so that he can hope to win more oscars. Working with Subhash Ghai will never win Rahman an oscar or a grammy

‘slumdog..’ has not shown any poverty!!
by Saugata Banerjee on Feb 24, 2009 10:51 AM  | Hide replies

what poverty was shown in this film?

surprising but truly, if u study the film, this film has not shown any poverty of India but it has shown the dirty slum or dirty India or lawlessness!
it has shown the wastage, huge garbage everywhere in slum!

what a common man wants or relates to poverty?
that is : roti, kapra, makan(food, cloth, house)
this film has not shown the problem of the above three in slum!
has this film shown that someone is foodless, clothless or houseless prior to riot? and any sequel of incident that parents r unable to feed their children? parents r binding or sending their children for begging?
uprooted children basically it showed ,were the victim of riot! jamal’s mother was killed and so, he was orphan and went to slum dweller hand! and so with the other child who lost their parents or parents less!
this can happen to any middle class child also if some one lost the feeder!
using the child , exploiting the child as child laborer are the anti-social work who may kidnap the child also! begging by the child was not due to those child poverty but they were used as a money earner by the underworlds!

so, the much hype that this film has shown reality of India or poverty, does not hold it’s basic! it has only shown the anti-social work where childs were forced to do such!
so, as per my view, this film is a total failure in terms of showing poverty or reality of India!

Dear All,
It is really disgusting that whole lot of TV Channels, both Hindi , English and website forgot to mention that there was a Festival called Shivratri in the land of Shiva called India.
The coverage of Oscars was so much as if oscar touches everyday life of Indians.
