Why not? India has the cheapest charges on mobile phones compared to the West. The business plan was to reach every home in both urban and rural area. Imagine if even 20% of the 1billion population buy this! Processors will be produced in massive bulk quantity that no body could imagine.

Even assuming they add some more disk storage and a few USB ports with Linux OS and the price shoots up to $40-$50, its still the worlds cheapest laptop.

A toy laptop for kids costs around $20 which just has pre-programmed basic arithmetic and english language, rhymes. This will easily replace the toy with actual access to internet.

Hats-up Indian scientists!
by shareef sa on Feb 04, 2009 09:13 AM

Whatever, critics has to say, Indian scientists did it again! (We should not forget Cheapest moon mission of India).

From the words of all responders here, we can make out getting a laptop with 2GB flash memory also will be tough in 10USD. Whether we can run softwares in that or not - it can download from net (whichever be the network) and store data for students. This is a great help for rural indian childs.

by desi on Feb 04, 2009 08:57 AM  | Hide replies

"joint secretary N K Sinha said the computing device is 10 inches long and 5 inches wide and has been priced at around $30 at the event. However, he refused to comment as to why was it being projected as a laptop when it was not."

No clue on how to market
by Starfox on Feb 04, 2009 08:52 AM

If there is an unveiling today, where are the pics or at least detailed specs? They must really get their act together and see how foreign companies launch new products

by t xz on Feb 04, 2009 08:17 AM  | Hide replies

Is the $10 the actual cost or is it heavily subsidized by the government? 2GB memory itself costs $50 at least, even if you buy the cheapest one. So how are they making it for $10.

Idiot Pinchy Singh Oppps Pricky Singh...2GB on board memory means Flash memory, It does not use HDD and for your info 2GB flash memory is dirt cheap in the market. For a laptop with 2GB on board memory means that the storage of files you need to use external device such as ThumbDrive (Which is also called Flash memory) or external HDD.
Now in the market you can get 16GB thumbDrive for just S$39 (Singapore $) or USD$25.
