Pay hike is not ncessary at the moment
by sanjeet kumar on Aug 26, 2009 09:55 AM  | Hide replies

IIT faculty should focus more on academic things rather than salaries, Their focus is lost that is why they runing after the salaries. Current salaries of lecturer is enough to attract new and young engineers at the same time it is sufficient to live with grace with family of four in the metro or equivalent big city.
They are getting quarters and a good campus as well as intangible recognition of being part of IIT.

Going by that logic no one should demand salary.
Person working as a Manager at Citibank is getting excellent infra structure, free lunches, even flat financed by the bank, good recognition.. Any job you name has some positive sides.

We live in a capitalist economy. The teachers are the future of country and they should be paid good so that better people get into teaching profession.

This is the real panic situation for all great PhD holders in India after spending most of their life time in labs and teaching. That’s why people stay abroad. Poor hard working research slaves deserve more than cool IT slaves!

Pay Hike for IIt Teachers
by Rajesh Vyas on Aug 26, 2009 09:53 AM

The teachers are one of the most underpaid and worst treated communities in India. We have not respected them nor have we treated them well. These are the paople who are responsible for our Technical and Managerial proess but they have always got the short end of the stick. There is a urgent need to reverse this --HERE AND NOW> Their agitation is more than justified.

They deserve more
by umesh gupta on Aug 26, 2009 09:51 AM  | Hide replies

It is true they deserve much more than they are getting.
I had been part of EE IITB and observe the life and dedication of profs there.
See the schedule (Official one is 9AM-5Pm) they work..
Come at 9 AM or some time at 8 AM
Go for lunch at around 1PM.. come again after around 2 hours in dept.
Go for evening snack (some times)..
Come again go for dinner ...
Again back to dept. Work from 8:30 to 12:30 (typical)..
So including the works on weekends it come out to be around 12 hours a day on 5 days week average.
Compare to a “KAMCHOR” gov Baboo they deserve to be two times more than existing salary package..
You are saying their research would be worthless.. if it is true then who the hell is driving the technology all over the India.. are they Non-IITIANS?

Umesh, can you also talk about the perks that these profs get. The articles does mention they get starting pay of 38K, but what about the housing in the campus, is that provided, what is rent charged to them. if they live outside campus on their own, do they get HRA.

I agree for pay hike
by Sudheendra BM on Aug 26, 2009 09:43 AM

Member of Parliament gets too much money & perks. IIT professors create the best talent of Indian Engg sector. OK, I agree with argument that IIT students are highly talented. Please do remember that the best diamond is useless if it is not cut properly & polished by a skilled worker. Here Professor does that work of diamond polisher. In my openion IIT professors deserve the salary at par with IAS, Senior Burocrat etc.

Find a new job

If IIT Faculties are not satisfied with their pay scales, they should find the alternatives. They are just comparing their qualification and the pay which in no way justified.

A business owner with lesser qualification will be making more money than profs does that mean profs should get more than the businessman.

If a dumb ass IT guy is making Rs. 50K pm an IIT prof should be paid Rs 1000,000 pm if you scale their intellectuality.

IT guy will not have other source of income. IIT Prof can have consultancy, research fund and they can own a company. Think of cumulative income of a prof.

Only 15 K?
by P De on Aug 26, 2009 09:43 AM  | Hide replies

What's wrong with the University/DST/CSIR Institutes that they will have different salary scale than those in IIT's? I don't think 15K salary hike is needed for IIT Prof's.

If you pay peanut salaries your organization will be full of monkeys. First get rid of the monkeys then increase the salaries.

IIT & technical schools staff
by Prashant Wakhale on Aug 26, 2009 09:39 AM

There used to be atime when top notch students of premier institutions used to opt for teaching jobs in the same institution from where they passed out & it used to be an honourable job with dignity & good scales. In those days there was a respect & fear of such laurettes among the students & those were the real GURUS of those time.
Now a days in very good institutions of those time, there is shortage of good & highly educated with best academic records, lecturers & therefore the students there are not showing that performance. Similar situation may occur in IITs if Government does not look in to the facts. That will be apathatic condition of our education premiers.
