Management of IITs!
by Prem on Aug 26, 2009 09:38 AM

The professors of IITs do deserve a decent pay. But, the ministry should do more to define the role of IITs clearly. IITs currently function as a factory to train the best manpower for the foreign universities and companies. But this defeats the vision what once Nehru might have had. IITs should be the training ground for the technological growth of India. But, if we look at the situation of IITs, there is a huge mismatch between the capabilities developed (by a student in IIT, more specifically a PhD student) and the industry in India. Human resource ministry, Industry ministry and the education ministry should work together to grow the manpower and the industry in an organized way. The IITs should be evaluated by an International advisory board, who will monitor and give directions to IITs and report to the ministries. Such systems are implemented in certain countries. But, can all this happen in India?

IIT professors do not deserve anything
by Bala on Aug 26, 2009 09:32 AM  | Hide replies

In one way IIT professors do not deserve anything, because IITs' fames are because of its bright students. ISRO and DRDO get left out (after IAS, Investing Banking, MNCs etc) brains and do better than expected.

Oh..give us a break! There are many IITian around here reading rediff and they know the facts. If IIT profs are dedicated why is it that they draw a big zero in research???!! Have you any idea abt IITs world ..well leave the world..Asian ranking?? Keep that crap of dedication to you and other ignorant fools. If IIT salaries are bad why r they not quitting? GE kind of companies offer hell a lot of salary then why dont they quit?? These iit profs get quite a lot of money from the projects, which again mostly comes from govt depts like DST. Scientists in ISRO/BARC/DRDO are not allowed to get any such earnings. And in IIT any body everybody becomes a prof in a flash and gets high salaries. Compare it with the time scale and the contribution reqd to get a professorship in other international institutes. If they have any conscience, they shd ask for cut in the salaries in Professor scale and an increase in the entry level!

I completely agree with avinash..
Before blaming IIT faculties you should come and see their deidcation..

Many of the professors stays on campus despite of their family needs. They frame students for countries future..and take pain of living of villege(IIT campus) despite of high caliber..they certainly deserves pay hike..

Certainly IIT students have got much name and fame for their alma mater. However, to say that it is only them who have made the difference, and the teachers there are just by-standers, is like saying a dish is good because the salt, pepper, vegetables are all good and not because the chef is good. Certainly the ingredients being good is necessary, but no way sufficient. Let us give the credit to the Chef too !!

Mr.ak and mr./miss bala i would suggest you to try and crack JEE or GATE (m sure u guys need a lifetime for that) and then spend 4/2yrs at IIT then u will get to know about whom are u talkin shitt... IIT profs are world renowned genius in their field.. when u look at the pay scale of their counterparts in US,the salary that they are gettin is simply nothin... and about the research u r talkin about.. then for research u need better labs, facilities along with the intelligent people.. and the facilities that iit profs and students are getting is far below standard.. still they are making their country proud.. i know u will not understand this... coz u are moron who knows nothin than to just sit on ur PC type shitt ... the profs deserve far more than wat they are gettin rite now.. 15k is nothin...

This is the real panic situation for the great PhD holders in India after spending most of their life time in labs and teaching. That’s why people stay abroad. Poor hard working research slaves deserve more than cool IT slaves!

There may be one off case like this which is common in any given sector. But due to this the whole lot of IIT professors should not be punished.

Assistant profs at IITs get lesser than Grad students in USA
by Guest on Aug 26, 2009 09:29 AM  | Hide replies

PhD students in USA earn about $2000 i.e. Rs. 90000 p.m. Assistant profs at IITs are paid Rs. 30,000p.m. It is a fact that grad students in USA make more money than professors at IITS. In such a scenario, how can the HRD ministry expect bright PhD students to join as faculty at IITs? Assistant profs should be paid at least around Rs. 70k-90k p.m., as compensation for their skill. Probably IITs should increase student fees to make required revenues.

What I am saying is it is not looking encouraging enough for me to join IIT as a prof, after I finish my PhD. Who wants to go for a lesser pay with increased qualification?

get your basic right, exchange rate is the wrong way to judge the pay of US ohd vs Profs...
use ppp...the vaule of one dollar is you but some thing in India is close to 7-8 rs...so it comes out to 14000/ nt 90K

software engineers in US are paid 90-120k USD. thats equivalent to 45-60lakhs rupees. Can any Indian company pay so much to a software engineer. I agree that the pay for IITs profs may be less, but you cannot compare apples to mangoes

Srinivas, thats the top dollar you are talking abt. Even in Indian companies senior software guys make 25-30L. GOing by the same logics profs salary in India should be half of what their US counter part gets. As of now it is just 10%

Funny demand!!!
by Sandhya Jain on Aug 26, 2009 09:25 AM  | Hide replies

Why only for IIT faculty as if other organizations are not doing anyting that the country can be proud of. For example, India was a country begging for food grain supply from all over the world. Is is the farm scientists who have made this country self-suffient in food. Now it can even export. Is not it a great achievement. Achievements should not be measured in terms of cpmplexity of science. Faculties from other organizations too have made us proud for example nobel laureate Amartya Sen. So why to ignore them. Identify the deserving candidate irrespective of the background and give incentives. Others will be encouraged. Otherwise weeds will also get the benefit.

Probably you need to look at some profs at IITs who spend 10-12hrs a day doing quality research. The research is used by for example DRDO/ISRO. They don't have enough talented ppl as IIT profs to work in their organizations. Obviously, more capable ppl deserve higher pay.

ISRO and DRDO assemble the parts brought from Russia, USA, and Israel. They get 10% achievement bonus. IITs do fundamental research and get nothing (probably our politicians will be impressed by gimmicks only)
