Nothing is loaded in this nation in faour of anyone except the eternal jokers- the politicians & their cronies-the (un)civil servants(?/ masters)corner all the spoils & treat the rest with contempt.
It seems to be ridiculous that faculties of the best institute in our country were not satisfied with their emoluments. The students passed out earns in crores and their makers are not compensated well. Secondly they should have demanded at least Rs.30000 hike per month.
Simple economic principle says that the value of any item depends upon "demand" and "supply" position. Obviously there are more people in teaching line and hence low pay. If all leave the jobs, automatically the system will try to attract more talents.People stick to low paying jobs as no high paying jobs are not available.

Have you gone mad Mr. Lakshminarahyan? The IITs are already facing shortage of faculty as nobody is interested to join there at a low pay scale. As stated in the article, this would in turn force students to go to foreign universities.
Being a World Prestigious Tech. INstitutes IIT faculty must be provided with Best Salaries in the Country. So, Govt. Should not give chance to divert the mind of Faculties from Academic to economics things.

Harvard, MIT, or Stanford professors are not getting Indra Nooyi's (a useless and unhealthy product owner) salary.

Yes and no. Many profs at these institutions owns shares worth multi million dollars. Percentage wise the profs at these universities own much capital than what a typical corporate guy in Pepsi owns.
It is because a) They get private money b) They get patents for their innovation c) They get a royalty for researches done under their guidance.
Also the salary of the best profs is at par with base salaries of good corporate managers (not exactly the CEOs, but good managers). And besides the salary with their patents etc they make way more.
You should not really compare the financial position of US universities with profs of IITs. One of my friend is a prof at a mid tier uni in US and he owns a leerjet. Most profs in IITs will be lucky to own an AC car.

no they dont... i am a phd student and ex iitian...industry vs acadamia salaries are at par in US
Re: Patent inventions and make money
by Nisha Shukla on Aug 26, 2009 10:12 AM
They can't. It is India and IIT is part of GOI. Any invention done by them is automatically a) either the property of GOI orb) if it is financed by private sector, it is property of the party financing it.
In US any invention done under a prof, prof get a pie of the profit. Here they dont get a penny for doing research. They get paid just to teach that too well below than what they should get.

It measn you dont have much info. IIT faculties do earn from their research. Infact they earn even from their mediocre research. Its only in other research institutions directly under the govt eg., ISRO/BARC/DRDO who are not allowed to earn any money from their research.

AK - I do know much more about IIT as well as about foreign Universities. I have been involved as a student, as a research associate and now as a financer. The max that IIT profs can get is consultancy charges in a research. The min that even a mediocre univ prof at US is charging is a royalty on end product.

If u do research and make stealth jets, u get millions. If u reinvent wheels, u get pennies and u shd consider yourself lucky to even get those pennies. Thats the difference.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Patent inventions and make money
by Nisha Shukla on Aug 26, 2009 02:04 PM
naah. Thats really not the case. If I need a wheel and I go to US university, they (profs) charge millions. If I need a jet and have confidence and go to IIT, we get charged pennies.
Obviously due to the lack of financial incentives most of the profs are not interested in research. They get paid to teach/ They teach. They get paid for consultation, they provide consultancy. They never get paid for innovation, they do not innovate. Same prof when they go to foreign universities they are very active in research and lecture circuits.
What they have demanded is rather 'paltry'. Most of the faculties are top notch in their field. They have chosen to teach just because they love the atmospere. However we cannot expect this to continue for ever. Along with a decent emoluments, government should ensure a intellectual atmosphere in these institutes by way of less inteference as well as financial support to the institutes for research. The key is not just increase student intake at B.Tech levels, but ensure more high caliber students register for PhD.
We respect the IIT professors for their commitment and dedication. Its funny on their part to fight for money. Money can't be compared with the respect they have in society.

Dude, we live in 21st century. Respect is good. But respect doesn't bring food to their children.
talk about respect, the maximum respect is always for martyrs. You know very well what happens to the family members of martyrs in our country.
The profs at IITs are doing a fine job. They are demanding just a respectful salary (They ain't demanding salary increase of lakhs). It is justifiable. They MUST get it.

What is funny about it? If they can't earn enough to live a graceful life what commitment and dedication you expect from them? If money is there respect immediately follow my dear!

This is not only the money. The government has humiliated IIT profs. According to new pay scale, the salary of IIT assistant prof and undergraduate college teacher of same cader under UGC are same. It means one who joined IIT after spending 5 yeras in PhD and three years in postdoc ( mostly abroad)gets same salary with a college teacher who joined just after master degree.
Such brainy people definitely deserve a hike-not just Rs. 15,000 much more-. When Bank, insurance and Government employees take handful of salary much much more than what actually they deserve, these people who create future managers in sincerety should get maximum. I am definitely with them.

Why you worry? They earn what they deserve. If a petty cricketer or a silly bollywood star is getting in crores why not them?

by Pradip Rabindranath on Aug 26, 2009 10:05 AM
Well Why Not ? I am worried that the IIT profs are not being paid enough, if I had to put it correctly
Re: Salary at Bansal, Kota
by Nisha Shukla on Aug 26, 2009 10:09 AM
So isn't it shameful that they get paid more if they join a factory that produces kids to get admitted into IIT. It is matter of great shame that the same professor gets paid multiple times when he works for a coaching that helps children get into IIT, however same professor working in the great mascot of Indian Engineering get paid pennies.

Nisha is rite... so is shameful that brightest of students at IIT are joining MNC's instead to becoming professors and doing quality reaserch that they are capable of... all becoz of penny salaries...
These IITans are India'S " KNOWLEDGE POWER HOUSE" and India's rich source of brains. The nation should pay them the required hike to keep them with us and not allowing them to migrate to US or other westerna countries. PLEASE COMPLY IMMEDIATELY WITH THEM THEIR DEMAND !
