Vandana Shiva says ---- You can't equate a chain like Spencer's, with five shops in the whole country, with Reliance, which can open 5,000 outlets in a single city.

Hey, Spencers must be having 5 shops in Mumbai alone, forget the whole country.. And Reliance can open 5000 shops in a single city, but they would be fools if they do so...

When will these Seculo-left-liberal terrorists stop distorting the facts ???

How about Banning cell phones in India
by Vijay Vardhineni on Oct 04, 2007 06:00 AM  | Hide replies

Cell phones caused lots of job losses for the STD booth operators. May be they should fight for banning cell phones also. They can not fight for this because cell phone revolution created lot more jobs in sales/service.

Following are the benefits of big retails stores.
1) Cheaper prices due to price wars between big players.
2) Better rates for the farmers. Big players eliminates middle men.
3) Less tax evasion.
4) Less cash circulation (Most likely they accept checks, credit cards). They may not use cash for procuring goods.
5) More products available to the consumers. Small stores won't have enough space to display all the items. Big stores will have enough space so that they can display all the items there by encouraging innovation.
6) Better neighbourhood. They make sure that the surrounding area is clean. This may not be the case with the small shops.
7) Stakes are very high if they make a mistake. So they will never attempt to spoil their brand image.

For better quality and cheaper prices, we should always encourage big players. Competition between the big players always lead to price wars and no significant reduction in quality.

If you support organized retail in India, you should give your business to them.

Vijay

Dear Vijay,

Valid arguments. Agreed. Who else is listening? Since mid-term election is at corner, they have so much to listen from all sections except, middle class.

It's all in the game, eithr enjoy or let them enjoy.

May be there are pros and cons. Well i have been working in one of the big departmental stores in u.k. and i can very well tell you how bad it is bad for the economy. With the huge money power they have they sell things at rock bottom prices and then once all the small shops are closed they hike their prices. They bully the farmers and make them sell goods to them at low prices . The farmers fall in this trap as else they loose a big purchaser. They are so powerful that they buy the government. And at the end of the day they form cartels and fix prices. So the lower price is a short time myth. The fact is that now there are no small shops in uk and the ones left are closing down

'Quit reatail' protests
by Bodh Ramdeo on Oct 03, 2007 10:26 PM

The new and modern Mayawati-ishtyled 'Quit India' movement - all 'organised' Big Retailers must quit India and go set up shop in China, or Vietnam, or Brazil, or South Africa,or US or Cannada, or Ozzieland - anywhere but good ole Communist Bharat, or face the ire of the small traders, who've pledged to burn 'em out if they dare set up their big 'organized' retail chains.

surprising to farmers are joining anti retail
by kaustubh raghunath gharat on Oct 03, 2007 07:50 PM

I can understand the traders, hawkers and chemist are fighting against the giants in the retail as they really donot want to promote competition and squeeze their profits which they were earning by forming cartels to decide the rates (which were essentially dirt cheap)for vegetables and other farm produce while buying from farmers and other small producers and selling the products/ vegetable at the high rates but why are farmers joining in, will not it benefit them as their would be increased competition to buy the agricultural produce and now they will have at least some say in deciding the value of their produce? really surprising

Quit Retail
by MuKesh Nigam on Oct 03, 2007 07:42 PM

I just don't understand why we Indians always want to be inefficient. Have u not seen how we wasted last 60 years in the name of socialism and communism. We, the Indians, just want that there shouldn't be any competition and we remain in the market whatever we quote the price and whatever the product we present to the customer. If this mentallity continues to prevail in ourselves we shall remain as it is. Just move out of India and see these smaller as well as the big nations how much have they progressed and consequently the crime rate, unemployment rate is very low. Do we want to live with these vices, we have to decide.... But it's pathetic......it aches........it hurts that they just have a vote bank and they look at the election and a very myopic view. When these politician will become far sighted. If they don't become they don't deserve to remain in the centre stage they should leave for the people with new innovative ideas to experiment with.

'Quit Retail', protestors plan rally on Oct 10

Instead of protesting the Giant Retailers- I saw in Ahmedabad a few hawkers instead of Grumbling they parked their handcarts outside the Reliance Fresh store and went inside and bought the fresh vegitables - put them on their cart and went to sell in nearby areas without complaining and even small hotel people bought vegetables from this Reliance store.
Actually they enjoyed shopping there cause it was air conditioned and vegetables were of good quality. So others also can use their little brain and follow the same pattern instead of
listening to the leaders interested in publicity.

In Rjasthan Reliance Fresh, the maximum purchase is done by these retailers, who then sell it to other locations where these stores are not open.
