Supply Chain
by Arif on Oct 03, 2007 11:19 AM  | Hide replies

Any product or agricultural produce follows this path Manufacturer or Farmer->Distributor or Mandi->Retailer->Customer.
The final cost, is sum of Item transport labour commission taxes profits of the middle men.
In case of Big retail, supply chain works like this Manufacturer or Farmer->Retailer->Customer
Do be fooled into thinking that prices are cheaper with big retailers, who do you think pays for the monthly rents, wages, AC, etc?

So all you people are saying is this, instead of buying from fellow Indians, where many Indian people are benefitted, transport fellows, coolie fellows, small retailers etc. You would buy from big retailers, who pocket majority of the money. The product I buy at reliance is actually costlier than the local grocer. Please check your monthly bills, this is true!

id like to see the biggies actually come out with advertisements to claim that they are cheaper or else let the small vendors remain. if they have substantial discounts, why not profit from it ?

Reliance products are no cheap at all. Most agri products (with the exception of cucumber, and some times onion) are of very poor quality. I am comfortable to buy from our local cartwallah!

Do you know at what price it s being bought from farmer? Do you know that the farmer who produced that fruit/vegetable might have commited suicide due the non remunerative prices these cartwallahs offered him? Have you come across any cartwallahs committing suicide due to the non remunerative pricing?
Moreover, do you know that thousands of crores of rupees is lost annually, due to the poor post harvest handling of the agricultural produce (including selling F&V under the direct sun, as it happens with cartwallah? in India. Do you know that this money is more than the TOP 5 IT companies' turnover in India? Do you know that just a part of this money saved can solve ALL the farmers' problems in INDIA?
Mindboggling.... Isn't It? Can the cartwallah invest on the cold chain? For that matter, can Govt. invest on the cold chain? Forget... Can the Govt. or YOU consumers train these petty guys about quality and preservation of the F&V.... NEver. Wake up guys, support agriculture... support farmers..... No agriculture means No food, Again,Means, NO LIFE..... Kill false economics, before it kills life....

Ridiculous Arguments put forward by leftists

If the NGOs are so worried about job safety, let's ditch factory made clothing, and wear khadi. Also do away with plastic goods and start using clay and mud vessels. Likewise ban motorized vehicles, so that tongas and human rikshaw pullers don't lose their livelihood. It should also be made compulsory for every farm product to pass through at least 25 intermediaries before the customer buys it. This way millions of new jobs will be generated, thereby abolishing poverty, unemployment and creating a paradise where no aam admi's livelihood is trampled.

Economy thrives on business, any business is just buying and selling. In the process many people get benefitted. If all products bypass the supply chain and reach the customer, how will the economy grow. I am a software professional, I get paid 25K, but my company would be charging 100K for my services. By your logic if I and group of friends directly sell our our services to a USA company, even if we make twice, what is the use? If Indian company billing rates come down, then they will lay off jobs, therefore many people will suffer as a result of few. Economy is a large entity, don't think in simple terms as tongas...

'Quit Retail', protestors plan rally on Oct 10

I fully support views and approach of Vandana Shiva that India should not become a retail hub just for some to earn billions. No doubt, consumers will be benefited in the first fight between the road vendors and retail big houses. To bite their shares, these retail houses will sell all important items at an unbelievable prices, but the aftermath of permitting retail business will be huge as half of the population cannot afford 2-times meal. Crores of people from Bihar and U.P. are petty fruit and vegetables vendor. They cannot bear the initial onslaught of Retail Biggies like Reliance and Wal Mart. Since, these people are illiterate and cannot be absorbed in any other sector, India should escape this route of progress.

All you fools dont understand the commitment of India to the world, why the hell on earth should the USA allow Indian products to enter its markets?? Why should it allow services like IT ,BPO ,banking etc etc to sell or enter its markets??
You people dont even understand that the urban boom right now in India is only because of the employment boom especially in IT,real estate, banking etc etc..
To keep the boom and to let other countries get a fair deal(hope u atleast understand what fair means) so that we can get more business from these developed markets we need to allow the big Walmarts and Tescos into India ..To have a desi competition to them we surely need Reliance..
Reliance and other big companies would pay atleast 75% of the taxes they owe to the govt ofcourse the income taxes of employees, but these small traders rip the poor farmers off, dont pay even 1 re tax so whats the use of these small traders to the govt and to the ordinary individual ??..

As far as the traders go ,they have to find better ways of getting things cheap ,may be form associations to bargain for cheap commodities etc etc When reliance can get the same thing so cheap in India why cant these smaller traders ??
There should not be sentiments attached when something is a clever decision..
If we dont allow reliance to boom , walmart will atleast after 10 yrs-20 yrs or 30 yrs,Reliance has a majority Indian holding so thats better than walmart..Hope people dont forget the COKE experience ,Co

let it be the hawker or trader, and now the chain stores, everyone wants to exploit the farmers, our leaders are the greatest exploiters, they have never let the farmers reap the price of rice of Rs25/kg and wheat for Rs 18/kg, why? see in the retail market the price variation from the farmyard to the retail , it is the greatest exploitations, and yet govt wants to curb inflation only on food grain, in Andhra they want to give rice for Rs2/ kg, even cattle fodder is expensive than this sarkari rice, hidden behind is the vested interest. If the corporates can make a setup a mechanisium,of a industry approach, than a feudial , supply cahin with vested interest. Our delhi durbar is now filled with the multi national influence. They are powerful ,see even govt officials serves them , either before or after retirment, so now we know that the adminestration is sold to money power.

In fact the farmers are the people who are the benefeciaries of this retail boom. becz this retails guys will buy the farm produce directly from the farmers, resulting in the elimination of middlemen who follow un-fair trade practices with this farmers. in fact the retail boom will bring a fair price to the middle class and lower class family who can get the food groceries or and perishable items. no doubt still the market is not that competitive. but with some more retail players it the consumer who is going to benefit out of it apart from the farmers.

competition always improves performance. I am getting more attn and better quality fruits and veg at local veg vendors nowadays.
WE always suspected spurious cooking oil from many shops. the situation will now improve with bigger chains coming in.
Direct buying from farmers should also improve their lot. We know that huge amount of food goes waste in the country for want of suff cold storages. With retail chains entering, coldstorages will now be created to optimize supply.
So today, it cannot be easily said that the big retail chains are devil;

If someone says they can provide you things for less by directly getting from the farmers and avoiding the middlemen and also the farmers get a better price for their goods as the commision to middlemen is avoided, then why dont we go for it. If the biggies comein this doesnt mean that the regular bhajiwala will be out of business.

Do you think that the farmers are getting their best now? I think the big company's should enter into the market, so that govt can put regulatory measures in the system easily and ensure that farmers are benifitted. The actual concern is the fate of small retailers.

It is pitiable that our political masters don't see the big picture and are getting worried of these "middlemen"or so called traders.....under such schemes, the farmers are the biggest gainers whereby thay form cooperatives and then supply directly to these retail giants rather than individually to mandis from where the traders pickup......it's all a matter of time iguess
