'Quit Retail', protestors plan rally on Oct 10
by Uday Phutane on Oct 03, 2007 06:31 PM  | Hide replies

Instead of protesting the Giant Retailers- I saw in Ahmedabad a few hawkers instead of Grumbling they parked their handcarts outside the Reliance Fresh store and went inside and bought the fresh vegitables - put them on their cart and went to sell in nearby areas without complaining and even small hotel people bought vegetables from this Reliance store.
Actually they enjoyed shopping there cause it was air conditioned and vegetables were of good quality. So others also can use their little brain and follow the same pattern instead of
listening to the leaders interested in publicity.

In Rjasthan Reliance Fresh, the maximum purchase is done by these retailers, who then sell it to other locations where these stores are not open.

Impediments to progress

The whole country will benefit coz of organized retail... especially the middle-class who will get good quality at cheap prices coupled with great service.
Nobody cares about the middle-class, coz middleclass is always scared of protests/dharnas.. thats why they suffer almost all the time.
Why should we care about the middlemen, who do nothing but add to the prices along the chain??
Plus they offer pathetic service with lousy quality.
One simple example would be the non-existent of Returns-policy in our country. In western countries, the return-policy is fabulous.. u can return anything within 1 month... no questions asked. Tell me, wont the citizens/consumers benefit by such consumer-oriented policies.. this is just an eg of the benefits of organized-retail, besides cheap prices & good quality.

Need of the hour is organized retail
by farewriter on Oct 03, 2007 05:28 PM

There is no doubt that the general public is kept in dark while shopping at the local small shops and their attitude towards the customer. Retail makes shopping a pleasurable experience and provides several different commodities that can be brought under one roof. Government can put up an autonomous body like TRAI for telecom into the retail also to keep the big fellas from bull dozing the end users(consumers). The kirana shop owners will have to survive in the country by embracing different roles of jobs which might even fetch them more than what they used to earn (may be they will realize they too were taken for ride by middlemen through out). This will also allow better infrastructure management for cities where people will not use roadsides for parking and obstruct other road users.

why
by Campro on Oct 03, 2007 05:14 PM

1. why do this on a working day on 10th. why not on a saturday and sunday so that disruption to regular life is minimal. or do these people believe that because they are impotent, condoms should not be sold?
2. the main reason politicians are interested in supporting small traders is because of the concept of mamool, where-in a local cop can walk into a shop and demand an amount of money as a weekly cut, to allow the business to function. in a mall, this is not possible. there is a big one-time payout by the builder/promoter at the time of building the mall and after that the govt, police etc; have to have a hands-off policy.
3. will these protests matter in the long run. it is poor and lower middle class who stand to gain by organized retail and not the fashionably organic crowd. Case in point is the discounts offered by the big retailers on everyday purchases like toothpaste, atta etc; contrary to the obvious, it is the low income groups for whom 5Rs and 3 Rs matter, who stand to gain by big retail and not the higher income people who dont care how much a product costs, as long as it is available.

Have the protesters heard about the 2 million jobs that are going to be created by organized retail? I guess not!

Senseless & No Logic
by Vivek on Oct 03, 2007 04:14 PM

The protests lack simple logic & sense.
How are these morons differentiating Reliance, Bharti from Spencer, Subhiksha & Big Bazaar.
Future Group-Big bazaar is currently Indias biggest retailer. The brainless chaps protesting this are just looking for some publicity for a good bargain price to back out.

Moreover efficiency, professionalism & competitiveness has come so that the end consumer-the common man can benefit with low prices & good quality products.

Protesting organized retail is like banning Delhi Metro as this modern mode of transport is causing some discomfort to the thug mafia of rickshawwallas & blueline suckers, not understanding that how much benefit Metro is causing to the common man..
And yes the Metro also tries to make some profit out of its operations so that it can improve services, expand & pay better to its employees & shareholders.. Is there something wrong in doing this??

These protesters are trying to take India back to medieval age & the Chinese agents Vandana Shiva & others perhaps don%u2019t know that China has welcomed Wal-Mart with open arms & its doing pretty well there.

Quit Retail

I would not get surprised to see some of the above names, who are against retail, heading the retail chain business either as Sr. Managers or even in board members by 2010.

Quit Retail

I wish the HC or the Supreme court step in & BAN all RALLYS that are not in larger public intrest in this nation.Retailers has been like Draculas sucking common man's blood all this while. Now for the fisrt time they have a choice of buying quality stuff at a affordable cost(along with the Farmers who can get a better deal from these corporates for the produce as this will end up removing all the middlemen who have been duping farmers so far). Now these so called messiahas of Retailer's,Morons like Vanadana Shiva can't digest the fact that common man & the Farmers are getting a better deal. These thug's are showing they are worried about 6000 members & 1-lakh odd retailers, why can't they think about a billion population who will acutally be benifited.
This Nation is on a growth path & last thing we need is people like Vanadana Shiva & Praksah Karat(is it Carrot if yes give this man a stick & let him & his cronies settle in Communist China)who can't take anything that will prosper this nation(including a hard fought nuclear deal).
