Free market
by ashwin patel on Oct 03, 2007 12:21 PM

Free Market is just like jungle. Just because there are lions in jungle it does not mean there are no other animals left in jungle. Every player has to exploit its niche and become best in its domain. Big retails stores should be allowed to operate to provide competition and lower price. Small stores need to improve its service and provide extra service such home delivery, micro credit, cold storage, etc. I am very much sure that all can co-exist in this urban jungle.

Coke -- Walmart and Reliance
by sai on Oct 03, 2007 12:21 PM  | Hide replies

We lost to the Cokes and Pepsis of the USA , now i hope we dont lose to the Walmarts...When Coke was banned in India ,we didnot have a corporate doing that business so today Coke has entered India anyways and we have lost to Coke... Today coke is helping soo many individuals earn a living with its network of dealers(coke is available in almost every village) if coke is banned now , may be even the govt would fall.
That is how corporates work, with money not with sentiments..(if anyone says he values sentiments more than money ,he is fooling himself)

Reliance is the biggest dubious company in the world. Once Anil Ambani picked up a stake in Spanco tele. Guess what, before he bought into this company, many foreign companies bought the shares of Spanco tele, just 1 DAY before. Most of these foreign companies are connected to reliance indirectly. After this news was announced the share just sky rocketed to twice in a week. Common people could not buy this share for a month because it was freezed in top circuit everyday. That's 30 crores in a week of stock market rigging. Ambani's are just white collared thieves, sucking the blood of common Indian public.

Similarly it is only a matter of time before they will dictate to the poor Indian farmer on the prices at they will buy. Why does Reliance not go to USA and do supermarket retailing? Because they know how Indian policies can be twisted, Indian people fooled repeatedly. Their manner of operation is simple, rig the stock market, make money, use the same to open up a new business. We Indians are selling our souls to reliance.

see whether it is reliace, spencer or wallmart everybody is in market to make profits nobody is doing it for charity. Overall infrastructure cost of the establishing these stores are very high and they have to generate the profits too. So it is completely a myth that these stores are going to benefit the consumers. They sell 2 items very cheap and 20 items very costly at the same time. I have personally experienced it. It the only media who is spearding the propaganda of farmers benefit by these organised retailers. 8 retail vegetable vendors out of 10 are farmers, they are intermidiary mind you all. Thier family work in the farms and one of thier family member goes to sell in the market directly in tiny cities. Intermidiarries are only exists in the metros or the big cities.

Dude, if they can't benefit the customers by providing cheaper goods, the Indian people are not fools to continue buying from them. The Indian middle class is quite famous for keeping their purse strings tight. And similarly if the farmers don't get a better price, they will continue selling to the existing middle man.

So, are you saying that any non-Reliance large retailer is free to set up stores in India? Is your problem only with Reliance? If you go through the books of the small retailers, the amount of tax they cheat the government is huge. And multiply that with the total number of small retailers in the country, the amount is enormous. If you're argument is just based on honesty and fair practises then there is black sheep everywhere.

Quite Retail, and bring fishmarket on road..
by manoj kumar on Oct 03, 2007 12:20 PM  | Hide replies

The people of india are not fool, they know who is going to serve them well. Reliance retail, or bania ji who blocks the foot path so that lakhs of women and chilren cant even walk. Reliance, walmart will bring customer service. They will pay good salary to staffs. They pay tax. These hawkers shop, not even pay tax, they sell even bad prodcut at higher prices.
If they are good why worry, compete with the Relaice, give better customer service, Relaince shop will close automatically. Its open market. But to protest and unionbazi is nothing but politics.

What about porters at bagha border
by Manu on Oct 03, 2007 12:19 PM

There is so much hue and cry against organised retails by traders. Three days back the porters at bagha border made same hue and cry for allowing the trucks movement across the borders. There arguements were same, it will curtail their business and their family would be in trouble. Why not these traders stop the trucks to support the porters. They are sucking the farmers from hundreds of years giving him only meagre amount and taking almost 100% comission for selling the produce in one day that they produce in 4 months of hard work. The NGO are also making money by supporting them and by threatening the big retailers.

Thank you Left and NGOs and my local kirana store
by RA on Oct 03, 2007 12:16 PM  | Hide replies

Thank you all.
I wish you best of luck that your agitation is very successful. I am so used to buying inflated prices pulses from the local kirana store with stones coming in with every bite that i cant imagine buying low priced goods from the retail stores and miss the sweet sound of stones crushing inside my mouth.
I want to pay more money to that local kirana store because i so much like his face.
I also want to thank you for selling me 950 grams of ANYTHING by manipulating your scales and charging me for 1000gms.
I love you so much, because you charge me Rs 2 extra for keeping the cold drinks and juices in your freezer( though they are mostly just not warm).
I also love to waste my time, by going to 10 different stores for 10 different things. And bargaining with you is so much fun, even though you always win.Somehow , I have understood this - For 1 kg of potatoes -
If I am coming in car - Rs 8
If i am on scooter - Rs 7
If i am on a cycle - Rs 6.5
If am walking - any nymber which comes to your mind.
I love this unpredictability.
Thank you, oh my saviours! for making my tax-burdened salaried life so better, since you have not paid tax properly in last few years.

Let the consumers decide..
by DM on Oct 03, 2007 12:09 PM

Let the consumers decide in this issue. After all it is the consumer who is going to buy the products. In a democracy we have the right to protest but what is the use of these meaningless riots which end up damaging public property.

The big stores also have their limitations and what is needed at this hour is that we need people like Vandana Shiva to exploit those limitations. If Shiva and his colleagues are able to do that everyone stands to gain.

by Karamjeet Singh on Oct 03, 2007 12:00 PM

Vandana & the likes have found an opportunity either to make quick buck by blackmailing the Retail players or serving their political bosses. Why are they scared of competetion.Let the consumer decide his/her source of purchase. These days Even Rikshaws, Tongas are pitching themselved against autorikshaws, buses, Taxis etc without any grudges. What's the problem with Reliance or Bharti.Let Vandana not decide for the masses.
